Braulin Ends Historic Season; Has Eyes Set on Four Star Cup

Kasperi Braulin was a fourth round pick of the Vancouver Whalers two seasons ago. Considered a bit of a "flyer" pick by the Whalers brass, they needed a backup goalie to play some games behind their already well established goalie, Casmir Stevens. Braulin was a relative unknown at this point, and was the third goalie selected in the draft. What would follow, would be a set of circumstances that would throw the young goalie into the fire a season ahead of schedule, and forever change the record books.

Braulin showed promise in his rookie season. He appeared in 13 games for the Whalers, posting an average record of 6-6-1. His numbers weren't bad, but weren't mind blowing either. He had a goals against average of 2.51 and a save percentage of .890%. He didn't appear in the playoffs and his team went on to be eliminated by Montreal. The plan for Kasperi was to get a few more starts or possibly split the following season with Stevens. Then, in the playoffs, he would be handed the reigns and take over for Vancouver after Stevens was promoted to the SHL. But late one night, Kasperi received a mysterious message from his GM Luke, stating that if Stevens didn't return, Braulin would be the starting goalie right out of the gate in his sophomore season. Braulin had no idea what to make of this, and while still half asleep, turned on TSN. He then saw the breaking news, that his mentor and friend, Casmir Stevens, had gone on the run after being caught trying to lure restricted free agents to the team he helped manage in the SHL. The news spread like wildfire, and general managers in the SHL caught wind. Braulin's draft stock rose, and he was selected by the West Kendall Platoon in the first round, the first goalie to be chosen in the first round in seven seasons. This was just the start of his historic season.

Braulin started the season with gaudy numbers, goals against average under 1.80 and a high save percentage. Many expected the first year starter to even out. While his numbers did decline, they didn't decline by much. Braulin ended the season with a goals against average of 1.91, the second lowest in SMJHL history. His .915sv% was also good enough for 2nd. Braulin's numbers could be enough to win him Goalie of the Year honours, but the performance of veteran Tibuk Soonika was impressive as well. Soonika had more games played(41) , shutouts (5) and wins (27). But, the record setting GAA might just be enough for Braulin.

The Whalers now look onto the playoffs, where they'll get a rematch with the team that gave them the boot last year, the Montreal Militia. The difference this time could be Braulin. In 4 games against the Militia, Braulin posted a .914sv% and a 1.5 goals against average. If he can do that in the playoffs, the Whalers will have their revenge, and possibly, their Four Star Cup.
