PT 6 - Postseason Kickoff
#16

The first round was extremely difficult as we were taken to six games however we persevered and managed to get to the next round versus Halifax. Beating Lethbridge was no easy task and we look to take our lessons that we learned from the first round into the second round. We learned that as a team we need to either score more or have a more suffocating defense and create a team identity behind one of those ideologies. We have a very talented offense and thus utilizing it would be extremely important for our progression in the league hierarchy as well as playoffs. As we continue to the next round versus Halifax it is important to note how stingy the defense for the Raiders is. We cannot afford to not capitalize on major scoring opportunities and it would be of benefit to insure that we score on whatever chances we may get. We will not be able to get a lot of shots on target thus it is important that we cannot waste a single opportunity. We need a strong special teams and our coaches have been working on our efficiencies and special teams. As we continue to prepare for this next round coaching has become more and more important and they look to steer us in the right direction.

The Halifax Raiders had a goal for this regular season. That goal was to earn a first round bye. At the start of the season, it seemed like we were on track. Our superstars were producing and we were getting incredible play out of our rookies. However, at the halfway point, Halifax started to do Halifax things. After a number of losing streaks, morale seemed to be at an all time low. This led us to not reach our goal, and to draw Colorado in the first round.

Although the team was a bit defeated, Esa took the floor before Game 1 and reminded us that the ultimate goal was the four star cup. Although we had a tougher road than we expected to get there, we could still lift the cup as long as we play the game one shift at a time.

Halifax went onto the ice with that mentality, and it paid off in spades. We took games early and didn't give up chances to win in overtime. We threw the body hard and always hustled onto and off of the bench. This never say die philosophy led to a first round victory in game 7 and kept our playoff hopes alive.

In the first round of the playoffs, Vancouver faced their worst opponent yet. Anticipation. Dealing with a bye, the two weeks leading up to it were torture for some of us. Especially when the team's culture tells you that its our year. Now don't get me wrong, Montreal is a strong team, not someone to underestimate, but the consensus was that we were gonna win this year. "Yeah, yeah coach. Pucks on net and don't over extend, BUT CAN WE JUST PLAY ALREADY?! " We were just chomping at the bit. Player-wise, we had faith in our goalie, Kasperi Braulin, who earned himself two team records for the season, and our Captain A-A-RON Wilson kept us cool before and during the series. Being a late arrival, I was told out the gate that Jean-Paul "THE BOI" Boivin wouldn't have much ice time in the upcoming series, probably the whole playoff schedule. 189 TPE this late doesn't make you the top-tier player in SMJHL, so I got to help where I can. Who knows? Maybe Jean-Paul will get some ice time if we get far enough ahead in the series (I did though it was lackluster). I'm excited for it. I want a boat. We want a fleet. As far as Whaler's making it to the third. Well, spoiler alert here, buddy, we did. If you asked me prior to the series, I would also have said we will, but every team should think they are going to win, right? And uh, Pucks on Net.  Whalers

The Lethbridge Lions entered the first round of the playoffs in an interesting position. The team had a change in management and decided to retool the team for the future, and saw several trades involving veteran members of the team. Still, the team picked up steam and managed to be the higher seed in their first round matchup. More interestingly, they were put in the position to win the first playoff series in franchise history. Up until this point, it had been nothing but defeat in the postseason. In fact, entering this season, the franchise only had one playoff win to its name. They quickly changed this, as they won game one with a score of 4 - 3. After four games, they had taken a commanding 3 - 1 series lead, scoring 4 goals in each of their wins. The team knew one more win could be huge for the city, and the franchise in general. While the team was unable to close out the series in game five at home, they did win game six, closing out the first playoff series win for Lethbridge. The team went on to lose a hard fought six game series in the second round, but the seed has been planted for this team in the future. Setting new expectations for the team and showing that they are ready to take the next step starting this upcoming season.

It was a very tough first round exit for the Knights as they lost to the Lethbridge Lions in a tough 6 game series. The Knights finishing at the bottom of the basement this season with 35 points looked at the possiblity of an upset over the Lethbridge. After two games it look it would be the case as they took away home ice advantage from the Lions, but dropping both games at home. The Knights had their backs against the wall and were only able to fend it off for another two games before losing Game 6 in a close 3-2 loss. They are were a lot of takeaways from this series, but it was the fact that the Knights couldn't get away being hemmed in their own end for the most of the series. A winning formula consists of great d and puck possession as well as being to get the most offensive production from your team. The Knights just simply got out worked consistently and couldn't put the formula to solve the Lions. This being a rebuilding year for the Knights they look add some players via this upcoming SMJHL Draft as well as the current members of the team getting a year older and developing in taking the next step.

Nothing changed and no breaks were given to the Vancouver players when the season finished. The team was happy about their results and claimed home advantage but knew they had to perform even better if we wanted to compete in the playoffs and the coach thought so as well. It was the start of the post season and the Whalers had just played the night before but everybody was ready and had an open ear for the coach, it turned out things would get more intense and every drill was doubled, the players put in work and sweated their asses off all week while the lower seeded teams battled it out in round 1. Each day Vancouver primed themselves for a tough series and they were getting used to the new routines, the only thing the players looked forward to was highlights at the end of each day, everybody was taking notes and commenting on player performances just in case they had to face one of them down the road. At the beginning most players were unhappy with the extra time they had to spend at practice but by the end of it they were pleased and were more than ready to face the Militia. As the first round concluded and Montreal arrived in Whaler territory, the cameras were also ready for the hyped up must watch series

The Raiders certainly didn't have the easiest regular season, as we finished a disappointing 8th place among the teams in the SMJHL. However, our performance in the first round of the playoffs certainly added a great deal of light to what was a somewhat sad season, we managed to defeat the number 9 seeded Colorado Raptors in six games, which allowed us to move on to the second round of the SMJHL playoffs. It was certainly a close series, however, as every game except game three was decided by only one goal, meaning that the winner of the series could have easily been the Raptors have we hadn't scored an extra goal in the the five other games of the series.

It was a fairly low scoring series, with the most goals a team was able to score in a game was 4, which is a testiment to both goaltenders, to specifically our goaltender in Halifax, Biz Nasty, who actually leads all goaltenders in the playoffs in minutes played with 843 minutes. This shows how crucial and reliable Nasty has been for us not just through the first round, but for the duration of the playoffs, as well. ( @GrilledTwinkiez )

We also had some really great offensive performances in the first round which helped us advance, including fellow rookie FR Finn-Rhys ( @FinnRhys ) earning a goal and an assist in game one, Timmo Kyllonen having the exact same in game two ( @Lemonade ), Josef Kubinec ( @"Marc Bradford" ) scoring two goals and Esa Parmborg (@Steelhead77 ) having two assists  in game five, and Taisei-Tiikeri Wawazat  ( @Wawazat ) scoring the game and series winning goal of the third period in game six.

In sum, it was a very exciting, rewarding, and successful first round for the Raiders, and most importantly, it was a team effort as to how we ultimately succeeded.

In the weeks coming up the the first round of play for the Montreal Militia the entire team decided it would be best if we just relaxed, Vancouver was meant to be a pushover win and the rookies who carried the offence for the Militia this season had no idea the importance of preparation for something like the playoffs.

Instead of watching video, Hugh Jazz decides the best course of action for himself was continuing the career of his “Be a Pro” in NHL 19 because he wanted to see whose career would end up the best in the great scheme of things.

Conor Tanner decided watching the SHL playoff games would be watching the SHL playoffs live instead of watching video of the Whalers, Conor already knew how to pass a puck and truly believed he was the best in the world at it, why would he need to continue practicing when he knew he was going to be the best player on the ice for either team at any given moment.

Ultimately this plan came back to bite the Militia as both Conor and Hugh looked lost during game seven of the Militia Vancouver series and that seems to be what lost them the game and series overall.

Season end was an exciting one for Detroit who finished with a really solid 3rd place finish and were in contention for 1st place all season long, and the S48 Playoffs, as well as its hopeful Four Star Cup finals, was on everybody’s mind. The team rallied around the strong bond and chemistry they had built in their season(s) together and were itching to make this one for the history books. Their first round matchup was a bye which was a good time for a bit of rest, though most of the players worked even harder this weekend than they did during the season. Rookies Anazibf, Fouquette and Andros, who spent the whole season becoming close friends as they player their first seasons together, worked out together and did quite a bit of training together in preparation for the enhanced roles they’d be receiving during the playoffs. The team as a whole did also use the week to recover from the long season before their Anchorage face off. As a final cap off, Andros, Anazibf and Fouquette had a dinner with their new training partner, and soon to be rival, Gabe Johnson, catching up and spending the final happy moments together before the bitter heat of the playoffs begins.

**First GM in SMJHL history to win 3 Four Star Cups back-to-back-to-back**
#27

Writing about round 2 since most of the PT parameters are outdated as of now

Detroit had a very tough series vs Anchorage, eventually going down in a devastating 7 games, proving how devastating smjhl playoffs, or playoffs in general, really can be. 5 of the 7 games were decided by less than 2 goals, and often, goalie performances decided the outcome. Detroit outshot Anchorage 6 times, including a game 7 performance where they had nearly 40 shots and still lost. In the end, Spector was largely disappointing and Larson was a king. Detroit featured a first line that produced, and then almost nothing else that worked. Anchorage featured an extremely good Tony Ford, but more importantly, a fantastic performance from the team overall. Both teams had a lot of issues on the powerplay, which made it even more of a deadlock. Overall, it would be pretty reductionist to call Detroit the better team in this series, as Anchorage put together a fantastic effort and deserved to win, but Detroit could definitely go home thinking they deserved more of a run than they ended up having. The rookies will feel excited at a chance to continue what they started, but the veterans will be sad at the loss of their final ever chance to lift the four star cup.
