Game 91 of the SMJHL season

Final score: Lions 4 - Falcons 2

Three Stars of the game according to Simon T Hockey Simulation version 1.5.1:

Third Star:

Austin Roenick of the Lethbridge Lions of Alberta, who recorded one goal, zero assists, one point, a plus one rating and three shots. As well as being effective in the face off circle recording one face off win in two attempts.

Second Star:

Harry Carpet of the Lethbridge Lions of Alberta, who recorded 40 saves in 42 attempts good for a 0.952 save percentage, and if it were not for the fact that this is the three stars of the game according to Simon T Hockey Simulation version 1.5.1 I would have named him first star. 40 saves is an incredible feat not often matched, and honestly his save percentage is what one them the game. It is not often that you can double the shots of your opponent and lose, and that is just what Lethbridge and Harry Carpet managed to do.

First Star:

Eva Lykke Aparjode of the Lethbridge Lions of Alberta who recorded two goals, one assist, three points, a plus three rating and 5 shots alongside a staggering two shots blocked as a forward.

Recap of the game as sponsored by Canadian Tire:

First Period:

Both teams come into this one with a little bit of a middling record and it showed for both teams in the first period as it took nearly 16 minutes for the opening salvo to be fired for either side. As at the 16:20 mark the first goal of the game was scored.

1. Detroit Falcons , Khabib Nurmagomedov 4 (Travis Bitties 14, Espen Knutsen Jr. 10) at 16:20

Second Period:

The second period is when the flood gate was opened for the Lethbridge Lions as in only 12 seconds the first goal was scored.

2. Lethbridge Lions , Eva Lykke Aparjode 10 (Monkey D. Luffy 8, Joln DuBolk 12) at 0:12

It only took three more minutes for the goal to break the tie

3. Lethbridge Lions , Jaco Petermen 4 (Boruvka Banananak 14, Frank Mouette 4) at 3:51

8 more minutes is what it took for the official scorers to list the game winning goal

4. Lethbridge Lions , Eva Lykke Aparjode 11 (Boruvka Banananak 15, Neu Ulmerika 7) at 11:08

Detroit was not keen on going down quietly though as closing out the period with a mere 39 seconds left, Jagger Fouquette had this to say

5. Detroit Falcons , Jagger Fouquette 7 (Skao Anazibf 4, Wibbly McButternutz 5) at 19:21

Third Period:

The lone goal of the third period was scored less than half way through as Austin Roenick potted the dagger goal that put the game out of reach for the Falcons

6. Lethbridge Lions , Austin Roenick 9 (Boruvka Banananak 16, Eva Lykke Aparjode 8) at 9:53 (PP)

That concludes the recap of game 91 of the SMJHL.

Ford Tough Wall of the Game
Well we had a close one for tonight's game with two players coming out with a tie for most hits. However, we here at Ford feel that Jack Bauer, Lethbridge's Sophomore Defenseman, earned the title tonight. What gave him the edge from his competition not only his four hits on the Falcons, but his willingness to use his body to block the shot. Bauer came out the gate ready to play. Within the first minute, he laid out a nice clean check on Tankovic before becoming the an accessory wall to Carpet having to blocks around he 11th minute of play. Matching his production in the first, Bauer reminded the Falcons that you can' sleep on this 6'5" wrecking ball with two hits in the second and another blocked shot. While his third period was a tad lacking stat-wise, we can say that Bauer is "FORD TOUGH."

Banananak- Fo Fanananak, the Unsung Hero
I suppose I'll call Mr. Banananak the unsung hero of tonight's game. When he wasn't spending his four minutes in the penalty box, Banananak gave one hell of a performance. Involved in three of Lethbridge's four goals, Banananak possessed the most assists this game. Not only that, but Mr. Banananak wasn't afraid to put pucks on goal with three shots for tonight's game. All were stopped by Specter, but hey, you can't fault a guy for trying (though you can fault them for their shooting percentage). To round out Banananak stats for tonight's game, he also got two hits in tonight's game making him one of the most rounded performance's tonight.

First Star, Eva Lyke Aparjode.
Aparjode was awarded the first star for tonight's performance, and it is easy to see why. The Winger earned two of Lethbridge's four goals, and assisted in their last goal during the third period's powerplay. Aparjode started the game strong with an early shot block, and he never stopped. He showed a tenacity out there on the ice. Hell, if you want to see it, look at the 9th minute of play in the first period. Three shots in four seconds! Now, yeah, he was standing by the goal, but that is still a shot every 1.3 seconds! His second period is where he started to earn his star, however.  With a deflection goal within the first minute of the second and another in the eleventh minute, Aparjode made smart plays and kept good positioning that allowed him to have those goals. In his 18 and a half minutes on the ice, Aparjode, a man responsible for a quarter of Lethbridge's shots tonight, demonstrated great offensive play coupled with good defensive awareness. Without him, Lethbridge might have came home with a loss. I mean they were out shot by 22, and I could ague the Carpet should have gotten first star; however, it's a toss up. You need good offense and defensive.

The Aparjode Show

Eva Lykke Aparjode decided tonight was the night to show up. Through three periods of regulation hockey, Eva Lykke Aparjode put up a whopping 2 goals and one asisst, along with 5 shots on goal! All of that in addition to blocking 2 shots, in only 18 minutes of time on ice, has earned Eva Lykke Aparjode a well deserved first star in this game.

The Lethbridge Lions would go on go steal an easy 4 to 2 victory, despite getting out shot a whopping 42 to 20. Sometimes just putting the puck on net doesn't get you the amount of goals you need to win a game. Sometimes, you just need Eva Lykke Aparjode.

Harry Carpet Covers Everything

After an overwhelming game, somehow Lethbridge Lions goalie Harry Carpet only earned the second star of the game. After stopping 13 shots from the Lions in the first period, Carpet ended up stopping another 12 and then 17 in the second and third periods.

Many people tend to overlook a goalie, as is evident by Carpet only getting the nod for the second star in tonight's game. However, it's clear that if Carpet wasn't on his game there would have been no chance for Lethbridge to pull out the victory after getting out shot a stunning 42 shots to 20. Carpet better not be paying for a drink tonight!

Nutered Knute

Espen Knutsen Jr, one of the lone highlights of the Detroit Falcons tonight, put up one assist and three shots to end the night as a -1 on the plus minus board.

When asked about his performance after the game, Espen Knutsen Jr attributed his poor performance to bad minutes played by his coaches. He ended the third on the team for minutes, going 4 for 7 on the faceoff and having the second most power play minutes.

"it was clear it wasn't working. I don't know why they didn't shuffle it up some. I guess tomorrow is another game."

My three stars of the game.

1. Eva Lykke Aparjode, 3 points night by the forward, scored 2 goals was a difference maker for the Lions for the season and showed the league that girls can score, that might piss off @PenKnight eh or whatever my teammate's name was.

2.Boruvka Bananana, the winger got 3 assists tonight and honestly was robbed in the actual games three stars, 3 assist game is basically a hat trick if you think about it. Boruvka or however you spell the name played a great game and honestly is well deserved of the 2nd star in my books.

3.Harry Carpet , 40 saves from 42 shots on net. Great performance, stood on his head in this game and honestly, without their snipers and goalie. this could've been a blow out.

Nour’s 3 focuses

Comment 1: Powerplay Woes Continue
Once again Detroit finds themselves on the losing end of a game following a lethargic powerplay. Much like our last segment on this, Detroit yet again is handed 4 opportunities to take charge of the game with the man advantage and once again they squander it. Detroit’s general play left a lot to be desired this time around but the powerplay is certainly one of the lower points here. Its hard not to point fingers, as both Jagger Fouquette and Kalvins Zvejnieks lead the team in powerplay minutes with just over 4 minutes each, and despite this, they came up entirely short. Falcons are in desperate need of a special teams shake up. (113 Words)

Comment 2: Physicality
Detroit has been known for a high energy level of play that tends to be more focused more on scoring and speed more than grinding and getting dirty. For Falcons fans who saw this game however, there was a stark change of pace here as Detroit revealed a much more physical side to their game. Connecting on 10 more hits than Lethbridge, the Falcons finished with 21 hits in this more up tempo game for them, with Kalvins Zvejnieks and Travis Bitties being the real workhorses in the physical department. Judging on the game result, don’t expect this to be a constant for Detroit (104 Words)

Comment 3: Penalty Trouble
One result of this more physical Detroit squad was a Lions lineup that was very prepared to retaliate, a lot of the time to the team’s detriment. Lethbridge responded pretty handily to the penalty trouble with a perfect, 4/4 penalty kill, though discipline should start to be a priority for them in future games. Had they been playing a Detroit team that had its powerplay on order, they could easily have been on the losing end of this game thanks to their reckless play. For GMs JNH and kyl, they may have to make sure their players work on better mental fortitude to avoid letting teams like the Falcons get under their skin like that. (115 words)
