Last season was an exceptionally disappointing tournament for Czechia of the IIHF. The team was by far the best one I had seen since joining the federation. In the second tournament that Japan and Switzerland played at the top tier of the IIHF Switzerland outperformed Czechia. It was an absolutely devastating blow to the advancement to this federation. This season we're coming back faster and stronger, and that isn't just a cliche that we're using to rally behind, it's the truth. Only two of our players, Dioynz Vyskoc and Alexader Zajac, are currently regressing. The rest of the teams has been in the gym and on the rink working on being ready for this season.

The Forwards

1st Line Center - Brady McIntyre @caltroit_red_flames
For the first time in his career (and likely the only time) Brady McIntyre will be playing as a forward! After 10 seasons of professional ice hockey experience McIntyre found himself able to play in any position on the ice and although there are no weak spots in Czechia's lineup, roster space and positional impact projections found that he would make the biggest difference if he were played as a center. We'll see how the experiment goes this season, but as a pass first player with lots of defensive experience the expectation is that he'll be a great two way center who sets up his wingers for a lot of goals.

1st Line Left Wing - Piotr Czerkawski @majesiu
The Polish beauty turned Czech will spend another tournament on the first line as Czechia's premiere scoring winger. He joined Czechia the same season as Brady McIntyre and he been the epitome of skill and class since joining. Expectations for him are high and he always lives up to them.

1st Line Right Wing - Luke Thomason @"luketd"
In S43 we saw an incredible tandem of young forwards in Luke Thomason and Alex Winters get tampered by Cal join the Czech Ice Hockey Federation from the ranks of minor professional hockey. These two players represent the future of Czech ice hockey. Thomason's skill and versatility make him one of the best options team Czechia has up front at either center or wing. Although this season he's playing wing we can expect him to be playing down the middle as soon as next season.

2nd Line Center - DeMaricus Smyth @Blastmeaway
DeMaricus Smyth has been the flagship player of the Czech Ice Hockey Federation since I've joined. He's the perfect leader and humble enough to decline the captaincy every time he's voted as captain, humble to a fault at that point. He's the true leader of the team and was gracious enough to relinquish the 1C spot to Brady for a season before he reclaims it next season. His joining Czechoslovakia before the breaking up of the union represents the moment when Czechia would begin its resurgence into the IIHF as a real competent and competitive federation.

2nd Line Left Wing - Alex Winters @39alaska39
Alex Winters is the other half of the S43 tandem that is destined to bring Czechia to greatness. Winters has been a great depth player for us up until now, but this season we see a lot of potential for him having a breakout season. He's always been a great member of the locker room and has been serving with Luke Thomason as a player coach for several seasons now.

2nd Line Right Wing - David Kastrba @hewasajazzman
David Kastrba has been around since the beginning for me. He's a little quiet in the locker room but it's really exciting when he does get a chance to come around. When I was first trying to get things going in a good direction I wanted everyone to have their own sig from Czechia to feel excited to be a part of the team and he was one of the first people to sign up to be a part of the Super Sig Makers. His photoshop skills are great and he's been the perfect 2nd/3rd liner for a long time. Now he's in his prime and think he's going to make some big waves this tournament. He's a guy who lays big hits and makes good passes. An OG. Love this dude.

3rd Line Center - Michael Scarn @Trautner
Michael Scarn is possibly the youngest skater on the entire Czech IIHF team, but he's already ready to hold down the 3rd line center position. I personally knew Trautner before he joined the SHL, but when he signed up to be Czech I was ecstatic. You're not only getting a great player, you're getting a great dude in general. Michael Scarn fled the USA after his career as a secret agent and following his MVP performance at the NHL all star game found himself being asked to play for an SHL team. Having set up his new life in hiding in Czechia he decided to take up the offer and here we are today. An interesting origin story to say the least. He might be new, but I'd say that he's already one of the top 3C's in the IIHF and believe he'll be the team's 1C some day very soon. Last season was his breakout season for the IIHF, we expect to see more good stuff this season and into the future!

3rd Line Left Wing - Dionyz Vyskoc @artermis
Vyskoc is half of the S36 tandem that has been carrying this team for a long time. When we were down on ourselves they were there to lead us. Now a couple of seasons into regression he's moved a little down the depth chart, but he's still a player that we all look to for leadership and scoring talent. This is one of the last seasons that we may have to see Vyskoc work his magic at the international level, so be sure to watch out for him breaking out all of the stops. His lengthy history with the squad is one that we'll all look back on in awe for seasons to come.

3rd Line Right Wing - Jakub Novak @Esso2264
Jakub Novak is another young and exciting player for Czechia. He's a winger turned center in the SHL but we've found a spot for him on the wing this season alongside Vyskoc and Scarn. Novak has previously been described as the "next great pure sniper" in Czechia. Hopes are still high that he'll reach that level, he's been waiting for a breakout season with Czechia and we think this could be it. He's fast, an accurate shooter and exciting to watch play. He's already a gem for us. We love our Esso.

4th Line Center - Alexander Zajac @StaticShocked
The other half of the two S36 players that have been around longer than anyone else on the team. Alexander Zajac announced that this would be his final tournament with Czechia this past season. Although he'll be spending it on the 4th line, we're looking at moving him further up the lineup to give him a little more time during his victory lap. Zajac has been a killer center for us holding down the top line for several seasons. We can't thank him enough for his service to the team and his country. Zajac plays a great two way game and have playmaking ability as great as the best player Czechia has ever seen. He's been feeding Vyskoc pucks since day one, it's been magic to watch these two play together for so long. Zajac you will be missed.

4th Line Left Wing - Shouta Aizawa @"andybj"
Aizawa came to Czechia as the younger relative of great defender Noctis Caelum. Aizawa has been a player that has been playing in both the WJC and IIHF tournaments for the past several seasons. Now ready to really graduate to the IIHF, Aizawa is expected to be a 4th line center that can dominate other bottom 6 competition. With another 5 seasons left before regression we still believe that he can grow into an even greater player who can get even more minutes in the middle or even top 6. This season we're hoping for bigger hits and bigger point totals.

4th Line Right Wing - Filip Zadina @jjlangabeer
Filip Zadina is one of the most exciting young players for Czechia. He's a shoot first players through and through who's playing in his first big boy tournament for Czechia. He's been a leader for the World Junior Championship team for the past couple of seasons and looks like he's going to be the winger equivalent of Michael Scarn, someone who skyrockets their way through the ranks of the Czech Ice Hockey Federation and demands playing time through his on ice talent. Though he'll be spending his time on the 4th line this season we'll be watching him closely for the future! Kick some butt Fil!

The Defensemen

1st Pair Left Defenseman - Charlie Schieck @Grapehead
I remember when I was first talking to Schieck when asking him to transfer to Czechia. It was a long discussion about what his role would be here and what the outlook for the team looks like. There were a lot of great options for him including staying with Canada, but ultimately he committed to sticking with us and we committed to giving him some things in return. He's been the best defenseman on the entire squad in my opinion in seasons he's played since joining the team. Schieck is a staple on the top pair with minutes on both sides of specials teams and big minutes 5 on 5. His presence on the ice is huge for us. It's not mystery why he spends every tournament on the top pair. Some people have it, some people don't. This guy has it.

1st Pair Right Defenseman - Troy McClure III @Troy_McClure03
Poor Troy. From TV star to lowly janitor? How did he stoop this low. But lo dear reader, each season at the IIHF tournament from the dark depths of janitor closet emerges a janitor turned hockey player. A vicious hitting and fighting machine who blocks pucks with his face and picks opposing players up by the balls and moves them out from in front of the net by force. Does he have the most finesse on the ice? No. Is he goal to score a ton of goals? No. But he gets the job done good 'n well. Like a janitor.

2nd Pair Left Defenseman - Barret McCarthy @Inf1d3l
Another transfer who has come to us and helped us immensely on the back end. As soon as he joined the squad he was a top 4 defenseman. McCarthy is great at both ends of the ice and just racks up assists like a machine. Another great locker room guy too that makes Czechia one of the best places to be hands down. We're happy to have you on the team dude, you make the defense kick ass.

2nd Pair Right Defenseman - Sean Stevenson Jr. @Obsidian311
It's starting to seem like our entire defense has come from transfers. Sean Stevenson Jr. is a defenseman who came to us from USA and has been looked to as the real stalwart all out defensive player on the team. He's been learning from the janitor since coming overseas and has absolutely killed it. I think with him and TM3 combined we may have the best defensive minded pair in the IIHF. The combined force of their hits could move a mountain I can tell you that. This is his second season in the top 4, we expect him to really take charge of the role this season and lay some huge hits out there.

3rd Pair Left Defenseman - Tokek Takshak @GeckoeyGecko
Dear Geck. Sweet Geck. If only you would fucking update <3. Tokek Takshak has been a really good pickup for Czechia since he decided to join us when finding out that Indonesia is not represented in the IIHF. A lot of people don't know this but Takshak actually raises geckos and brings them to practices and games for everyone to enjoy between shifts. Although there have been some cases of salmonella we're all happy to take the risk to pet the little guys. Takshak has played some tournaments up front on the wing, but we've brought him back to play some defense and score some goals from the point.

3rd Pair Right Defenseman - Andrej Doskicil @Citizen of Adraa
Doskicil is one Czechia's top home grown prospects currently in the system. After a great first tournament last year that saw him get 2 assists and go plus one we've put him back in the lineup to work more of his magic. He's a really steady defensive player that looks to be growing into a someone in the mold of Barret McCarthy with a bit more of an edge to his game. With 3rd pair minutes he managed to end the tournament with 18 hits, good for 4th on the entire team. As the older defensive players age we're going to see him climb the lineup and be a fixture on the penalty kill.
Previous Tournament Statistics:
S47 - GP: 12 | Goals: 0 | Assists: 2 | Points: 2 | +/-: 1 | PIM: 8 | Hits: 18 | SB: 9
TOT - GP: 12 | Goals: 0 | Assists: 2 | Points: 2 | +/-: 1 | PIM: 8 | Hits: 18 | SB: 9

4th Pair Left Defenseman - Bernik Vrzala @Off
We're seeing two defenseman make their IIHF debuts this season, both on the 4th pair. The first of that pair is Bernik Vrzala. Vrzala is an all out pass first defensive defenseman. He's more in the mold of a Troy McClure III than any other defenseman on this team so far, he skates around the ice deliberately and with an edge. It's going to be exciting to see what he can do on the ice this tournament.

4th Pair Right Defenseman - David Vent @ImShiny
Finally on the right of Vrzala we have David Vent. Vent is another defensive defenseman, although he plays a more positional and cerebral defensive game than Vrzala. You'll see him block a lot of shots and outmuscle opponents along the boards in puck battles. This is a defensive pair that fits perfectly together. They won't let in many goals and their differences in defensive game will keep the opponents guessing and on their toes.

The Goalie
Starting Goaltender - Chris Partridge @Mackkz
Our rock. Our MVP. Chris Partridge is by far the player I am most thankful for on this team. Friends I'm sorry, but Partridge has gotten us through thick and thin. He's been the best player on the team for several seasons in a row. I only wish we had another Partridge coming up in the system. With him now hitting regression we'll be in a rough spot soon, but for now we'll do what we can to make the most of the time we have left with him. Thank you for everything Mr. Partridge. You're a Czech hero.
Previous Tournament Statistics (only round robin and no totals cause I don't know how to calculate SV% as a total with this information):
S42 - GP: 10 | SV%: .907 | GAA: 3.06 | W: 4 | L: 4 | OTL: 2
S43 - GP: 10 | SV%: .919 | GAA: 2.73 | W: 3 | L: 7 | OTL: 0
S44 - GP: 10 | SV%: .908 | GAA: 2.96 | W: 6 | L: 4 | OTL: 0
S45 - GP: 10 | SV%: .917 | GAA: 2.54 | W: 6 | L: 3 | OTL: 1
S46 - GP: 12 | SV%: .920 | GAA: 2.25 | W: 7 | L: 5 | OTL: 0
S47 - GP: 12 | SV%: .893 | GAA: 3.13 | W: 3 | L: 7 | OTL: 2

We've got a kick ass roster and hopefully the correct lines from here on out. Let's go out there and get gold boyos!

In an unprecedented case of tampering Mike Izzy will suit up for Czechia this year in the IIHF. More on how he was tricked into boarding the wrong flight at the top of the hour.

We apologize for the delay, the flight attendant will be making her down the aisle with complementary beverages and snacks including cashews and cookies.
