S49 PT#3 - SHL Big Brother program

(This post was last modified: 08-18-2019, 12:52 PM by TheHockeyist. Edit Reason: I don't even know the name of the league... )

Igor, being more a person to keep to himself, decided he'd go into his team locker room and read more about the individual upcoming players. He chose the only junior he knew fairly well, Noah Tedla @tedlamotors, a fairly strong defenseman player of similar build, much like Igor. Although the two played against each other in Igor's final SMJHL days, Igor was willing to show Tedla various situations that happen in the big league, and not to worry about the fact that the management team speaks French and Finnish. Igor offered Tedla to go on a long hike of the area, but he didn't seem too thrilled at the prospect. Igor also showed Tedla his chemistry set and the various chemicals he has in his home laboratory. The response was a bit concerning. Igor swore to Tedla that he knew what he was doing. Perhaps Tedla knew more than Igor did. This seemed concerning to Igor, and Igor swore that he wouldn't explode the lab again. Back in the locker room, Igor admitted to Tedla he'd need a bit of help with tightening his skates. Tedla obliged. Igor also reminded Tedla that his TPE growth needed to be checked every week - he must train to be better than Igor, or at least attempt to.

The week ended with Igor hugging Tedla. Igor wrote down in his journal later that day: "Noah Tedla. A fine individual, liked on and off the ice. I met him as an enemy in Anaheim, I shall leave him as a friend in Minnesota. I see much potential for him. I hope we remain in contact. Actually we will - we'll talk in the SHL locker room every game once this season ends. Stay strong, bud. And get stronger."

I decided to establish a mentorship over @TML99 Yamamoto Mitsuharu. There's so many reasons for this, really a lot of reasons to go for it, but all that matters is that were building a real ship, and it's going to have yellow sails, because Yamamoto and I both like that color. We don't love love it, like, but it's probably both of ours 4th favorite color, and it's important to be able to compromise... In life.. That's the kind of high level lessons Mitsuharu and i were able to able to experience with one another, you know during our week together. Cause we did it, and it was a fun time. I think the situations I put him in were very difficult, like he may need to pick better favorite colors next time, because it seemed kind of like he was just going through the motions. The first few colors he named were pretty generic if I'm being real.

Alexis Metzler has never stopped being involved in the Detroit Falcons organization on one level or another. This offseason, he had the privilege of sitting down with someone involved in Buffalo as a prospect, Detroit as a player, and a defenceman to boot as well (3 things that Alexis Metzler once shared in common)- Satoshi Zizagooney.

Zizagooney is a sensible young gentleman, with a lot of street smarts, a lot of spunk, and a hell of a lot of skill with the puck. But one thing that Zizagooney apparently didn't know much about how to do, was to balance his budget. Satoshi Zizagooney went out one night in Detroit with the rest of the lads, and spent a rather unfortunate amount of money on the kind of hooker that winds up buggering off with your wallet at the end of the night, too. This left Satoshi in trouble with his landlord. Fortunately, this is one area Alexis Metzler is an absolute expert in, and he showed the budding young defenceman exactly how to set up a budget with spreadsheets in order to meet the landlords demanded payment plan. This enabled Zizagooney to avoid needing to move, and hopefully approach his finances in a more conservative way in the future.

This is probably one of the easiest PTs I could do because my actual Big Brother is in the league. If some people did not know, @Otrebor13 is my big brother and he is actually the one that convinced me to come back into the league. We were both active back then and he was a lot more active than me in the past and I had seen he recreated, and I was interested to come back.

If we would have to prepare me for the SHL, I think he would help me on my offensive talent. I am a defenseman in the Juniors and plan to be one for the rest of my career, and I think having my brother as a forward, hed be able to preapre me to produce points and be effective on both ends of the ice.
Also, I think that he is a lot more professional than me and he is older, so hed be able to prepare me for the media and how to handle the pressure of the big league. It is a little different from the Juniors, the whole league and fans are on a whole different scale. I think he would help me stay composed and be prepared for whatever questions I get asked. Especially when I go through a slump and whatnot, you gotta stay focused and really stay the course. Continue working hard in practice and continue developping your game in order to make a difference on the ice, help your team win and what not.

Kristaps Ball decided for the SHL Big Brother program to mentor the latest first overall pick in the SHL, Elijah Jones (@Toivo ) of the Los Angeles Panthers and currently playing for the Anchorage Armada. The choice at first makes no sense. They play different positions, as Ball plays the D and Jones plays on the wing. And when you think more about it, it really makes no sense, but Ball went with Jones anyways. The two spent time talking about how to use your money wisely, and don't buy things you don't need like equipment that you can't afford. Ball learned this the hard way earlier in his career. They also spent a lot of time practicing on the ice, as Ball helped Jones become better defensively. Ball also helped Jones learn more how to get in better shape and taught him what he needed to eat and how to train to become stronger, which will be needed to play in the majors. At the end of it all, Jones told the media Kristaps "wasted his time" and "taught him nothing."

Akashi SixNine loves the kids, so much that he still actually is one at heart. In order to improve his abysmal play on the ice this season, SixNine decided to adopt Gabriel Johnson @Gwdjohnson

Johnson is a talented individual that just needs some nuturing from the reigning Rookie of the Year (not a big deal) in the Simulation Hockey League. On the day off, the two decided to head over to the casino and try to double the shit earnings they both make in their respective leagues. SixNine taught Johnson the importance of squeezing out your general managers to be able to get the biggest payday ever - even if you do not deserve it. They then learned the importance of blowing that money as quickly as possible, so you are living paycheck to paycheck, and go to every game hungover. It is what makes the experience of playing professional hockey so fun. Sixnine also told Johnson the SMJHL is a shit league and to not stay in it for another season.

We did not say SixNine was a good role model, but he is a model.

For this program, I went ahead and chose Anaheim's first round pick @thiefofcheese. As the current captain, he seems like future captain material so I'll help his development in any way I can. I wanted to start by making him less of a thief, as that's not exactly a characterization a team would like of their captain. After countless hours spent in rooms full of cheese (you owe me $1 million for reimbursement of the cheese purchase btw, thief) he just couldn't keep his grimy little hands off of it. So I thought to myself, how do we spin this into a positive? I know. Paint the puck like a piece of cheese. We tried it at practice the next day and the kid was a ball of energy, chasing every loose puck and creating tons of turnovers. From now on out, all Anaheim home games will have the puck painted as cheese. Genius.

As the future but currently just an upcoming prospect of the Tampa Bay Barracuda, Anthony Archer was picked up for the Big Brother program by Nolan Sawchuk (@Jepox). Nolan ran Anthony Archer through his intense off ice drills and workout routines. Drills largely included the PK Subban high intensity training schedule. Drills such as stick handling while running around in circles on a trampoline, but also hopping on one leg which was of course a huge struggle for anyone unless your name is PK Subban.. In the gym, a bit more doable, Anthony and Nolan focused on a lot of hand eye coordination training in the brain such as pressing a specific button when it lights up on a panel, or balancing on a seesaw while passing back and forth. When moving onto the weight room, Archer would undergo some more intense lifting sessions on things ranging from deadlifts to squatting to resistance training. Overall it's been a great experience for Archer as he gets a peak in the life of a Barracuda and also gets a bit of a tour around his future team's city, Tampa Bay.

Anthony Archer - S49 12th Overall
1x IIHF Silver Medalist (S51)
2x WJC Gold Medalist (S48, S49)
2x Four Star Cup Finalist (S48, S50)

DMS has decided to take in Aron Hernadivic @"jfisherr". Together they have been going over league history inside the Czech Republic, SMJHL, and SHL. Since Hernadivic was drafted to DMSs juniors alma mater there is a lot of overlap in teams of interest for the two. Just the other day DMS and Matej Elias were talking about some history of the Seattle Riot and the dispassion of that franchise. DMS, Eliias, & Winters were talking about the Jester history and the 3-peat the Riot had along with the three in four seasons for the Manhattan Rage as well. Five of these 6 players are Czechian, Vratislav Zbyněk in S38, Alexander Zajac in S39, Liam O'Callaghan in S40, Alex Winters in S45, and Barrett McCarthy in S46. James Dekens won in S43 for manhattan, however he is not a representative of the Czechian International Ice Hockey Federation. There is lots of history strewn about in the Czech Locker Room to learn about.

Shout out to ml002, schultzy, slashacm, tedward!

For his day, Jax decided to take Lyle Odelien III (@Huck24 ) to a local cooking class as a means of mentorship. The two have played on Team Canada for the past 2 seasons and have shared a line so it seemed like a good fit. They spent the day learning proper technique and how to properly use the different tools in the kitchen, including how to use a knife properly. Jax claimed the purpose of this was to exercise patience and finesse (something Defencemen often struggle with) and also learn how to properly manage a healthy diet, however we think the real purpose was to spend the day eating good food, or atleast they would have eaten good food had Lyle not gotten distracted and burnt everything. End of they day however they met up with some of the other Team Canada players and got dinner, so everyone left happy.

For the big brother program, I was chosen to be mentored by the one and only Mike Izzy of the Calgary Dragons. It was a very interesting experience to say the least, and to be honest I didn't really understand why he was showing me all these clips of the Dragons while getting down with women (with drugs) in the other room. I mean was watching clips of Izzy scoring supposed to give me a deeper understanding of the sport or something? At a certain point I just got kind of bored and figured that I should be let in on the fun too, so I had a few women (with drugs) to myself, one of which bizarrely had an Anchorage Armada tattoo. That really weirded me out but I did my best to ignore it.

Apparently Izzy strongly wanted me to continue watching the clips he gave me, because he was absolutely furious at me getting in on the action. Worried for my safety, I used the only trick that I knew could console a cross Mike Izzy: buying him a chicken parm hero. This made him relax, and we managed to part amicably when I began my trip home to Hamilton.

I have to say the biggest lesson I learned is to avoid pissing off the Izzdog, and it will probably learn to be a valuable lesson once I'm in the league!

I was drafted into the SHL at taken 14th overall by the Toronto North Stars before I wound up being traded to the Los Angeles Panthers the very next day. However, on my first day with the North Stars I was assigned the mentor Harry Carpet (@Carpy48). Carpet was tasked with specifically helping me to improve my mental toughness, a skill that is essential to finding success in the SHL as a starter. Being that Carpet had already been through the wringer of battling it out in the SMJ before his ascension to the big leagues, it was determined that Carpet was the best voice to guide me in my transition to the show. What first surprised me about Carpet was that his ego was practically non-existent when dealing with me and I knew right away that Carpet had my best intentions in mind. Carpet told me that his focus was not to tell me what I needed to do but instead to show me how to overcome my mental fragility by placing me in a situation I knew I couldn’t win. Time after time Carpet had me run the same drill with two forwards where regardless of how positionally sound I was I would not be able to stop the oncoming shot from the two forwards, and each time I tried to make a save I had to overcome the fact that the shot was unbeatable. Carpet hammered home the fact that it’s how I perform after the goal goes in that matters, and that as a goalie I require a short memory. Letting goals in are not what we want as a team, but not allowing the ones that get by me to affect my game is what’s important. Unfortunately, I ended up being traded the next day and only got to spend the one training session with Carpet, but it’s a session I’ll remember for the rest of my life.

Denver Wolfe is a second year SMJHL player who just got drafted last season, this still makes him fairly new to the process and with not a whole lot of veteran leadership or guidance under his belt however Wolfe has still presented himself in a manor in the Colorado locker room to help his new recruits. That being said one in-particular Wolfe took a liking to was Hariken Urawa. He's a first generation player bred for success, despite being a different position, Wolfe took him under his wing to mentor him and make sure he received proper guidance and familiarity with the league. He wanted him to understand the importance of making sure he wasn't tardy (using Activity Checks) and also making sure he trained as hard as he could (Weekly Training). Finally, he also made sure any extra practice hours he could accumulate under his belt, he was going to do so (Weekly Point Tasks, Special Point Tasks, etc). Once all of this was established, Wolfe also made sure he was familiar with the rink, with the players, the coaching staff and made sure he just felt comfortable, because if he was comfortable, he was happy. At the end of the day, the two clicked immediately, are currently practicing together often and making the most out of their time on the team, something Wolfe looks forward to with his current time with the Raptors.

Written Task: If you are in the SHL, the league has asked that you to choose a player in the SMJHL to take in, work withand put in some difficult life skill situations which may come up in the future.. and see how they handle it.. and in 150+ words explain how it all worked out!? Who did you choose and what made you choose them? What did you both do during the week? Did you put him in some difficult situations? what did they struggle with and what did they do well at? What were your final conclusions of your mentorship with this player? (*tag player involved)

Now that we are a season away from seeing Esa Parmborg @Steelhead77, making his debut with the Calgary Dragons, Nicky Pedersen Jr. decided to have the young center spend the week in Calgary, to get himself familiar with the city he will call home for the duration of his SHL Career. Clearly, Peds Jr.'s goal was make young Parmborgs transition to the SHL as easy as possible. As the current placeholder for Parmborg at #2 center, Pedersen wants that transition to be seamless, so he can go back to his natural position on the wing. While in Calgary for the week, Parmborg was shown all of the hot local spots, including all the places that Alex Mack has "been". He knows to stay away from these establishments, unless he wants to end up having to get a shot of penicillin. Now that young Esa has gotten his initial look at Calgary, more importantly, where he can find the best Parm Sandwiches, we have no worries that when the young centerman gets the call, he will be able to immediately step in and contribute to the amazing success of the young Calgary Dragons roster.
