Pre Game
Monty Montgomery, the rookie goaltender, for Halifax makes his SMJHL debut against the unbeaten Montreal Militia early in this S49 season. Going up against veteran and unbeaten Starter for Montreal, Mike Hunt, this should be a good game to watch!

First Period

Just 16 seconds into the game, Montgomery is tested and fails. Wyatt Ruschkoff sets up a great goal from Gaspard Boone and Herry Morris IV taps one home as the top line streaks in for an easy 3 on 2 in which they pick the Raiders defense apart. Not a great start that Mongomery was hoping for but let's see if he's able to rebound. A couple minutes later Morris IV streaks down the left wing and rips a high glove shot that finds the twine just under the bar and the Militia go up by 2, just under 7 minutes into the game. Late in the period, Zeno Miniti is called for the slash which puts Halifax on the Power Play for the second time in the game and period. In the final minute of play, Taisei-Tiikeri Wawazat wires one home from the top of the circle after getting a pass from Haley Knight while Cody picks up the secondary assist. The Raiders are only down 1 headed into the second while the shots are almost even at 9-8 for Montreal.

Second Period

The game calms down a bit during the first half of the second but finally someone breaks through the defense. The Raiders and Atlas Rush, with a pass from Oliver Klozoff, knot things up and we have ourselves a battle! However a quick trip to the box for Halifax proves deadly as Gaspard Boone makes them pay wiring home a PowerPlay goal to put Montreal on top. Late in the period, Haley Knight makes a beautiful move and tucks the puck into the open net to tie the game up once more. Oddly enough Halifax has the momentum of the period as they out shot the Militia 10-4 in this period.

Third Period

Just like the first period, Montreal takes advantage of a rookie goaltender and gets to him early. The passing of Tom Fiddler and Phineas Gold makes the defense look silly before Joseph Weston slings one in low blocker on the young goalie. Montreal leads by one with 18 minutes to play. About half way through the period, the Legend himself Gaspard Boone scores again to make it his third point of the game increasing the lead to 2. Despite being an even period on shots, Hunt stands tall and Montreal walks away with yet another victory in this young season.

Three Stars
1 - Gaspard Boone (MTL)
2 - Herry Morris IV (MTL)
3 - Joseph Weston (MTL)

Unsung Hero: Haley Knight

All the attention with this games three stars went to players of the Montreal Impact, but Haley Knight of the Halifax Raiders might also deserve some praise. With an assist on the powerplay he kept the game close after just the first period, while scoring the equalizing point in the second period in a period where the raiders dominated offensively.
With his two point performance it still was anyone’s game going into the third and despite the goaltending of the Militia standing tall, without Knight the Raiders would even had less chances to score some points here. If the Raiders keep feeding Knight the puck, some great things could happen, keep in mind his goal was on his only shot in the game, if only he tried more!

Montreal’s special teams were a massive key to victory not only in this game but the previous games as well. When you look at the success rate of Montreal you see a power play with a 100% success rate in this game and with the penalty kill able to manage to defeat Halifax 75% of the time. Alexei Rykov has been an exceptional force on the power play leading the way in power play goals and in this game alone racking up two assists on the power play itself. The unsung heroes of Montreal are definitely the special teams that continue to put out outrageous numbers.

For the Montgomerys, a Night to Remember

Monty Montgomery Sr. looked on from the stands, beaming and tearing up as he watched his son, Monty Montgomery @CapMonty, take the ice for warmups.

The younger Montgomery is a rookie goaltender for the Halifax Raiders, who drafted him in the 7th round, 63rd overall, in last month's SMJHL Entry Draft. Tonight is a milestone, as he makes his first SMJHL start tonight at home against the Montreal Militia.

"All of those years, driving him to practice, to tournaments. He used to always talk about what he would do when he made the SHL. No "ifs." He was always that way." The elder Montgomery wipes his eyes as he recalls his son's confidence, with Marty's mother holding onto his arm. Both of them are adorned in Halifax Raiders jerseys, with MONTGOMERY #59 emblazoned on the back.

It's customary for the starting goalie to stretch and get limber while the backup goalie skates to the crease first to take warmup shots. Tonight, it's Biz Nasty @GrilledTwinkiez skating towards the net and Monty Montgomery skating to the bench area.

"We've always been proud of Monty," said his mother. Tricia. "He was just such a joy to raise. Always appreciative, always polite, always good in school. I'm so happy to see him where he deserves to be."

DotG - Cuthbert Coppercorn (Winger,  raiders  )

Dud of the Game goes to Halifax's Cuthbert Coppercorn, who only managed two shots on goal in seven minutes of ice time. Of note is an incident in the second period, when an errant Gatorade bottle sent the Raider careening over the boards and onto the ice during play. Thankfully, the only thing hurt was his ego.

⭐⭐⭐ - Joseph Weston (Winger, Militia )

Coaches on both sides would later acknowledge that Weston got a lot right in game 26, but perhaps most of all he was where he needed to be. The Militia winger not only defended well in the victory but scored a key goal in the third period, which wound up the game winner.

⭐⭐ - Herry Morris IV (Winger,  Militia )

If the Militia can claim to have a good night, they can thank Herry Morris the fourth, as he got them off to a great start: two goals in the first seven minutes-- including one screamer over the glove of rookie goalie Monty Montgomery-- made sure that the Raiders were hobbled before the game really got off the ground.

- Gaspard Boone (Center, Militia )

Gaspard Boone closes it out as the first star of the match. The Canada-native was key in assisting on the first goal, with a beautiful no-look pass to Wyatt Ruschkoff, who one-timed it to an open Morris IV. Boone further added two goals, including the fifth which took all the air out of the Raiders' viking sails. Dogged back-checking and a 70% win rate on draws means the Militia centerman was in Halifax's head all night.

Raiders’ Knight Impresses in Defeat Against Militia

Halifax Raider Haley Knight was in top form in Saturday’s 5-3 loss to the Montreal Militia. The offensively gifted defenseman tallied a goal and assist, as well as putting in 21 high quality minutes for the Atlantic Canada club.

An associate coach was not at all reluctant to sing her praises once the teams left the ice. “I know it’s not a great thing when you lose a game like that, with the goals against coming in the third. But I can tell you the staff here at Halifax know full well the kind of player she is, you know, and when someone plays that well for you and still loses, well, it breaks your heart.”

Despite her effort amounting to no points for the Raiders in the standings, Knight was not at all despondent when leaving the arena. She was seen joking around with fellow defensemen FR Finn-Rhys and Oliver Klozoff, who had stolen the cap from rookie defenseman Adam Barron’s head and refused to give it back. ■

This was a really cool game between the Montreal Militia and the Halifax Raiders. This game went back and forth in terms of goals. The Militia managed to get a 2-0 lead early on but the Raiders managed to get one goal in the first period still and then another in the second period to tie it up. After another goal by each team in the second period, the game stood tied at 3 goals each. Entering the third period, each team could still have won, but it was the Montreal Militia who managed to get the win by scoring two more goals in the last period and managing to win the game.

Physical Play Comparison

Montreal and Halifax put on a checking clinic in this game. 47 total hits were recorded in this game, which is quite a lot. Joseph Weston was the big hitter for Montreal, with 5. For Halifax, Karl Krashwagen had 5, while Atlas Rush and Oliver Klozoff had 4 each. On the other hand, not a lot of shots blocked, especially by Montreal. The Militia recorded just 1 blocked, while Halifax had 7. The take away here is that Halifax’s physical play cost them too many penalties, which is probably the reason for so many blocke shots. In any case, if they can stay out of the box a bit more with this level of phsycial play, teams will not want to face them.

(Losing) Player of the Game

Oliver Klozoff (D) – Despite Haley Knight being the only player to get two points, I have decided to give the (Losing) Player of the Game to Oliver Klozoff. Klozoff, who assisted on Atlas Rush's second period goal to tie the game, also had two shots on goal of his own. He also did very well defensively. Klozoff blocked two shots by Ruschkoff and Juukola although he did get a penalty for hooking. Klozoff also had the 3rd most hits of all players in the game, getting four hits against Ruschkoff, Morris IV, Weston and Lane. Overall, Klozoff is a talented defenseman who can also pull his weight offensively.

3 Point Night for Boone
Perhaps unsurprising, the league's leading scorer continued to impress tonight with two goals and one assist. The Militia's top line of Gaspard Boone, Alexei Rykov, and Herry Morris IV had over half of the entire team's shots. Boone and Morris IV had 5 a piece and rookie Rykov just 2. Both Boone and Morris IV saw 2 goals, just to cement their dominance as one of the leagues top lines. It didn't take long for the duo to get started either. Boone registered the games first shot just 6 seconds into the first, and after a hail of shots from the blue line, Morris IV picked it up to score 10 seconds later. Morris IV would continue his dominance 5 minutes later with another goal from Boone. Boone caught up later in the third.

Strong Show for Rookie Joseph Weston
Joseph Weston, who saw some time on the 3rd line this game, took this opportunity to impress. It was a hit by Phineas Gold that stripped the puck, leading to a tick tac toe play to Weston, who made no mistake and buried it. It was Westons only shot of the game but he made it count. Weston had 5 hits, tied for first in the game with Halifax Raiders Karl Krashwagen who is also a 3rd line wing. Weston continues to see limited ice time without a spot on special teams, but if he can keep up this performance he may make a name for himself yet.

Weak Start for Rookie Monty Montgomery
Rookie Monty Montgomery saw his first start tonight and it was a tough game for him. He saw just 20 shots but let in 5 goals. But don't be deceived, some of this failure lies with the Raiders. It was the Militia's top line that saw over half the shots in the game, with the other 3 lines under performing. The leagues top scorers saw many opportunities to get a shot away and scored 4 of the 5 goals. The Raiders top line should be looking at themselves when they see a performance like this from their goal tender. The words "Hung out to dry" come to mind.

When the Game Got Away

A back and forth game, the Militia led after the first period 2-1, and the Raiders in the 2nd period reversed that to tie the game at 3. The Raiders held Montreal to just 4 shots in the second period, still gave up a goal but they were still able to keep the game even. Unfortunately for Halifax, their goaltender Monty Montgomery fell asleep, combined with the time in the intermission, and Montreal scored 2 goals on 7 shots in the 3rd period, for a total of 5 goals on 20 shots. For the Raiders, it seems as though an excellent 2nd period was actually their downfall, as their goalie wasn't ready coming back after the low work and the long intermission.

The difference maker in this game was simply put special teams. Montreal was able to bully Halifax in this game, taking 4 penalties as opposed to just one powerplay, but they were able to capitalize when it mattered the most. They only surrendered 1 goal on 4 advantages for Halifax, vs scoring 1 goal on their only attempt. This allowed Montreal to play fast and loose, they were rolling around the ice throwing big hits because they were not being punished with their penalties. Halifax only mustered 5 SOG on net for their 4 powerplays, a sorely missed opportunity that has to sting with them losing the game by 2 goals. 3 of Halifax's powerplay shots came on the last powerplay when the game was already 5-3 for Montreal and late in the game, where Halifax was already showing signs of defeat and Montreal was just hanging on for the last push.
