Score: 2-3
Shots: 25-24

The Montreal Militia and St. Louis Scarecrow met for the 3rd time this season, each team with a W on the board, hoping to break the current tie. It was the Scarecrow who ultimately prevailed in this close game to bring their record to 2-1 versus the Milita, in a game that would ultimately be a tale of strong goaltending and dominant centers for the Scarecrow. . The game got heated eventually, with Nicolaj Muller being ejected from the game early in the 2nd period for an egregious spear, adding injury to insult after his 1st period goal. But the Militia were unable to capitalize on the 5 minute power play and ultimately fell. Alexei Rykov continues to be a bright spot for the Militia despite the loss, the rookie picking up his 5th assist of the season in 9 games.

1st Period
The Militia had a strong chance to take the lead in the opening minutes of the 1st period. The Militia 3rd-line began with a bang as Ricky Bobby put a big hit on Scarecrow star defenseman Basil Magnicotta, stripping the puck and starting a play that would end in a big save by Shiqa Vitalievich. The play began with a dump in by center Tom Fiddler, leading to strong forecheck pressure by Ricky Bobby, a series of passes, then a shot wide by Ricky Bobby, the puck being picked up again by Tom Fiddler for a quick shot which hit the post. Ricky Bobby picked up the rebound for a wide-open chance, but Vitalievich was too quick and made what is quite possibly the save of the game, and kept the Militia off the board.

But it was a dominant 4 on 4 shift by the Scarecrow top line that lead to the first goal on the night. Mika Kandinsky held a commanding presence for the entire play, beginning by winning the face-off in the neutral zone and bringing the puck into the Militia zone, shooting the puck initially which went wide and then picking up the rebound for another shot wide. The Militia were unable to gain control, and a scrum ensued in front of the net, with Kandinsky and Magnicotta hammering away at the puck, but it just would not go. Finally, the Scarecrow regained control again and after a few short passes, a strong shot but Nicolaj Muller resulted in the first goal of the night.

The Scarecrow extended their lead off of a quick goal off the face-off. After an errant pass by Zeno Miniti which lead to an icing, the ensuing face-off was won by rookie center Blake Phoenix, a quick pass to Richard Hurtz who made no mistake and the puck ended in the back of the net.

Montreal Militia - 0 goals, 8 shots
St. Louis Scarecrow - 2 goals, 8 shots

2nd Period
Early in the 2nd period the Scarecrow sought to take a commanding lead with their 2nd line. Once again, a series of missed shots by Yamamoto Mitsuharu and Lyle Odelein III generated some confusion, but ultimately Mike Hunt prevailed to keep the Militia in the game. The Militia were given a huge chance at the 5 minute mark, as Nicolaj Muller was ejected and given a game misconduct. Here was a chance for the Militia to cut the deficit with a 5 minute power play. The Militia managed only 2 shots in the first 90 seconds of the power play. The Scarecrow knew their strength was down the middle, so they stopped the puck whenever possible and controlled the pace of the power play by winning face-offs. Play would pick up in the latter half of the power play, but Vitalievich stood tall, stopping all 6 shots. A late 2nd period penalty on the Militia gave the Scarecrow a chance at the powerplay, but resulted in no goals. Despite the 2-0 lead, the shots are even at 15 a piece.

Montreal Militia - 0 goals, 7 shots
St. Louis Scarecrow - 0 goals, 7 shots

3rd Period
The game finally picked up for the Militia in the 3rd period. The Militia were given a second chance at the power play off a hooking call. Center Keikki Jaakola won the face-off in the Scarecrow zone, a quick pass to Henry Morris IV, to Bobby Lane who put the puck in the back of the net, then did his signature celly. The Militia were gaining momentum and just 2 minutes later they had tied the Scarecrow. A misplay by Tucker Centennial, who had a chance to relieve some pressure, lead to a tic-tac-toe play by Rykov, Sarantez, and Henry Morris IV, who finished with a strong goal. Ultimately, it was a bad match up late in the 3rd that put the Militia away. The Militia's 3rd line was out against the Scarecrow top line. Kandinsky won the face off and dumped the puck into the Militia Zone. Center Tom Fiddler picked up the puck, but the fore check was strong and a big hit by Barret Blackwood forced the puck away. Blackwood made a quick pass to Kandinsky who shot wide, but Blackwood put the rebound top corns and gave the Scarecrow a late 3-2 lead. Finally, the Militia were unable to regain control and goaltender Mike Hunt was only able to make it to the bench in the final minute of play. The 6 of 5 advantage resulted in 1 shot by Padraig Sarantez.

Montreal Militia - 2 goals, 10 shots
St. Louis Scarecrow - 1 goal, 9 shots

Final
Montreal Militia - 2 goals, 25 shots
St. Louis Scarecrow - 3 goals, 24 shots

3 Stars
1 - Herry Morris IV (1g, 1a) (MTL)
2 - Richard Hurtz (1g) (STL)

One to Watch: Shiqa Vitalievich

Montreal versus St Louis was an exciting even sided game where both teams had a shot at winning it as the score was tied with over 15 minutes to play. But by not allowing a single goal anymore for that amount of time Shiqa Vitalievich of St Lous might have stolen the game for them. It was definitely a goalie battle that the Scarecrow netminder ended in his favour.
Coming into this game he had only won two games out of five starts, so winning this game will definitely boost his confidence as he beat a goaltender who already has more SMJHL experience under his belt.

First Comment: 144 words

Another game where Montreal’s special teams shine even though it still ends in defeat. The power play team shows up with a 50% success rate and the Penalty kill just smashes it with a 100% success rate. Once again showing that Montreal is deadly on special teams and continue to punish the opposition as they repeatedly show up strongly in this area. The downside though is the first line only managed to bring one goal to the game and shows that if Montreal’s first line is not on their game the team struggles to put pucks in the net. With Boone, Rykov, and Morris working together and having good synergy they are near unstoppable as shown by leading the team's points table but once they are off their game it seems to lead to struggles as other lines attempt to pick up the slack.

Comment 1:
Muller Ejected: In a very uncharacteristic play, St.Louis' star Nikolaj Muller was ejected from this game exactly five minutes into the second period for spearing. We don't know what the player that incurred this could have said or done to get on Muller's nerves like this, as the forward had a mere 12 penalty minutes all of last season. He would end up surpassing this total in this single game, acquiring 5 for spearing and 10 for the game misconduct. In a mere 7:33 of ice time, he had a goal and three shots. Luckily for him and St.Louis, Montreal failed to capitalize on this five minute major and lost the game by a single goal.

Comment 2:
Goaltenders: Montreal would go with their main guy, Mike Hunt. Entering this game he was a red hot 6-1-0 but gave up the game winner with just 4:20 left in the third period. He will remain the Militia's starter for the foreseeable future until Mitchell Maverick comes into his own. St.Louis went with their rookie, Shiqa Vitalievich. This worked out as he stopped 23 of 25 and held Montreal off the score sheet until the third period. Vitalievich has a great opportunity to steal the starting role from Marques Brownlee. Look for St.Louis to rely on this kid more as the season moves along.

Rykov's Family, Friends Cheering from Russia

In the living room of a beautiful townhouse in the wealthy Petrogradskaya district of St. Petersburg, Russia, the Rykov family is cheering along with neighbors as they watch the Montreal Militia skate against the St. Louis Scarecrows on television.

It's nearly 2 AM local time, and St. Petersburg is about 6,423 kilometers from Montreal, but the Rykovs and their friends are rooting heavily for the Militia. The reason: their son, Alexei Rykov @RaginCajun is on the team.

"It was such a proud moment for us to see Alexei get drafted," said Alexei Rykov's father, Vasily, who worked as a machinist to put Vasily through his youth hockey development. "We have stayed up to watch every game."

Rykov used part of his $3,000,000 rookie contract to buy a new house for his parents, right in the affluent city center of St. Petersburg. He's promised his father, Vasily, that he and Alexei's mother, Sophia, will never have to work again.

Rykov has been a revelation for the Militia, as he has five assists in this season's first nine games and is among the top ten rookie scorers.

Montreal's Slump Continues with Loss to St. Louis

After rattling off four wins to start the season, the Montreal Militia have cooled off significantly. After last night's 3-2 loss to the St. Louis Scarecrows, a team that entered the game below .500, the Militia have now lost four of their last six.

A 2-0 shutout loss to the Colorado Raptors kicked off the skid, but the Militia haven't necessarily been having trouble finding the net. They lost games in which they scored 4 and 3 goals, to the Detroit Falcons and the Scarecrows, respectively.

"It's just been a tough go for us lately," said the Militia's Herry Morris IV @Taxman100, who was named the first star of the rematch against the Scarecrows despite the Militia's loss. Morris IV was the only multi-point player on either team, recording a goal and an assist.

"We had a golden chance to take two points here, and it slipped away. We know we can be better, though. We started strong, so we proved the level at which we can play. We just need to refocus."

The Militia were handed a golden chance to win tonight when Scarecrows star Nicolaj Muller @esilverm was ejected from the game for spearing five minutes into the second period. Trailing 2-0 at the time, the major penalty gave Montreal a chance to score as many as they could on the ensuing power play. However, they failed to capitalize.

DotG - Tom Fiddler  (Center, Militia )

Montreal's Tom Fiddler takes home the not-so-coveted Dud of the Game honor, after a lax play in his own zone led to a turnover that cost his team the game-winning goal. After losing the face-off to Mika Kandinsky, Fiddler received a short pass and was about to clear the zone when a fumble slowed him down near the boards. Barrett Blackwood pounced on a vulnerable target and nailed him. What followed was a missed shot by Kandinsky and then a perfectly placed shot by Blackwood to give the Scarecrows the lead with five minutes remaining. Keep your head up, Tom!

⭐⭐⭐ - Mattie Brunton (Defenseman, Scarecrows  )

Key shot blocks by Mattie Brunton kept the Scarecrows within reach of the victory not once, not twice, but thrice. The skilled British defenseman was a stalwart force on the blue line for St. Louis, making his presence felt physically as well as offensively, with a nifty assist on Nicolaj Muller's opening goal of the game.

⭐⭐ - Richard Hurtz (Winger, Scarecrows  )

Though he only played 13 minutes, American winger Richard Hurtz made the most of his chances. The winger had three shots in the game, each of them dangerous. His goal for St. Louis at 15:35 of the first was nearly impossible for Militia goalie Mike Hunt to snag out of the air, and the offense he created both in the opposing zone and on the rush was key in keeping the Scarecrows in the driver's seat all game.

- Herry Morris IV (Winger, Militia  )

It's rare that the 1st star is taken by someone from the losing side. In this case, the honor is warranted: Herry Morris IV put on a clinic in scoring, defense, and physicality. A goal and an assist placed him on the scoreboard, but it was his defensive prowess with his stick and a superior sense of timing that had media raving after the game. Highlights include a well-timed takeaway in the third, a crushing hit on St. Louis' Colton Strudwick, and a key shot block on a blast from Nicolaj Muller that kept his team in the game. Montreal may have lost, but Morris the fourth has a lot to be proud of.

Muller Ejected After Vicious Spear

Monday’s thriller between the Montreal Militia and St. Louis Scarecrows was marred by controversy as Scarecrows forward Nicolaj Muller was ejected for spearing Militia rookie Alexei Rykov.

The play occurred shortly after a line change. After the puck was dumped into Montreal’s end, Rykov skated deep to retrieve it. He forwarded the puck to Gaspard Boone waiting in the neutral zone. The Russian barely had time to react as Muller stormed down and collided with him in the mid-section, stick first.

It is unclear if Muller was attempting to finish a check on Rykov, or if it was retaliation for a dangerous hit by Heikki Jaakola on Muller’s teammate Noah Brusky less than a minute earlier. Unnamed St. Louis team officials have insisted that the spear on Rykov was less dangerous than it seemed, and that the rookie was making a meal of it.

Despite seeming despondant for a moment, Rykov was able to gather his composure and return to the ice without missing any time.

It is currently unclear if any suplimental disciplinary action will be taken by the league.  ■

This was another exciting game in this league, with the Montral Militia taking on the St. Louis Scarecrows. The game was an exciting affair, with the Scarecrows taking a two goal lead in the first period and seemingly having control of this game right from the start. However, after an uneventful second period without goals, the Montreal Militia came back to make this game interesting with two early goals in the third period. Once again the game was tied and now it seemed like the momentum was on the side of Montreal. However, the Scarecrows managed to fight back and won the game with a late goal in the third period to make it a 3-2 win for them.

Physical Play Comparison

If you like hits, you probably didn’t like this game too much. Only 24 total hits recorded in this game, which is quite low. No major standouts on either team. Padraig Sarantez and Zbigniew Pokrywka had 3 hits each for Montreal. No single player had more than 2 for St Louis. However, we did see a game misconduct ejection for a spearing penalty by Nicolaj Muller. Not something anyone likes to see, but worth mentioning. Shots were very even, penalties were very even, but St Louis blocked a few more shots. Not really much to take away from that. Although, in a game this close, that difference in shots blocked gave the Scarecrows enough of an edge to take the win.

Nicolaj Muller ejected from game garnishes a lot of talks!

In the fifth minute of the second period we saw Nicolaj Muller leave the game prematurely as he committed a spearing foul that also gave him a game misconduct. This hit was nasty enough that in the postgame show it showed many people having their opinion ready about Muller his actions.

After the game we tried to reach Muller for comments about his action but he could no longer be found in the arena. But the attention this spearing foul got did show what it is the people really want. Old time physical hockey! So continue to play like this Muller, the fans love it!

Rookie Performance Spotlight

Scarecrows Richard Hurtz Scarecrows
The rookies really stepped up in this game making the job of picking outstanding players a little more difficult than usual. However, Hurtz had a strong offensive game, scoring the only goal by a St Louis rookie in the game and producing three shots on goal in his 13:25 minutes of play. This absolutely gives him an edge over his teammates in our eyes.

Militia Bobby Lane Militia
Lane and Hurtz had very comparable stats this game. In fact, if you covered up their jerseys and just showed their play you would have a hard time telling which one is which. Very interesting, a potential rivalry in the making? We sure hope so. Lane finished the game with the only goal from a Montreal rookies, as well as two shots on goal and 14:39 minutes of play time.

Comment 1: Beware the depth

The league eagerly anticipated the showdown between Montreal and St. Louis, as it pitted two of the games best first lines against one another. St. Louis trotted out former MVP, Nicolaj Muller, as well as Blackwood, and notable snub for best two-way forward, Mika Kandinsky. Montreal countered with Gaspard Boone, as well as Bobby Lane, and Henry Morris IV. These lines had combined for 43 points heading into this game, with St. Louis' top line responsible for 23 of those 43 points.

With each teams first lines performing quite similarly to one another, this game would likely come down to which team's depth can support them. With each team's first line contributing two goals apiece, Crows depth player Richard Hurtz's goal in the first period proved to be the difference, as St. Louis took this one 3-2.

Comment 2: Battle of the Sexes Goalies

Heading into tonight's third meeting between these two teams, the story of their previous encounters had been a hot goalie, with Montreal riding a hot Mike Hunt to a win in the first meeting (34 saves on 35 shots, W), and St. Louis getting a respectable performance from Brownlee in the second meeting (19 saves on 22 shots, W). In this grudge match, St. Louis trotted out rookie Vitalievich, with Mike Hunt taking the crease for Montreal. In this game, Hunt once again couldn't repeat his performance from the first match, as he let in 3 goals on the 24 shots he faced. Vitalievich performed admirably for a rookie, turning aside 23 of the 25 shots on goal. It is likely that future matchups will come down to Hunt getting out of his St. Louis slump.

Comment 3: O Captain, my captain?

Nicolaj Muller is usually a level-headed player, evidenced by his designation of "Captain' of the St. Louis Scarecrows in S49, and has been both a leader by things he says, and things he does. Muller is typically a cool-head, taking minimal penalties, and contributing both offensively and defensively, while also engaging the rookies and other teammates in the Locker Room. That changed today however, and Muller better be thanking his fellow linemates for bailing him out. Muller was thrown out of the game at the 5 minute mark of the second period, with his team up 2-0. With their leader out of the game, St. Louis coughed up their 2 goal lead, and only managed to get the win off a fantastic shot from linemate Blackwood. Muller needs to get his head straight, as he is too vital to the Crows chances this year to make bone headed plays like that.

When the Game Got Away

Besides the obvious "game got away from Montreal when St Louis scored with 4 minutes left to take the lead", the Scarecrows had a short bench after Nicolaj Mueller took a nasty spearing penalty that got him tossed from the game. Montreal had a 5 minute powerplay to score as many times as they could, at about the perfect time in the game. They scored no goals. They were down 2-0 at that point, and though they scored twice in the 3rd to tie it anyway, a goal or 2 here would have put the Scarecrows on the hotseat if they could still score in the 3rd. It was ultimately giving up a goal late in the 3rd that got them the L, but Montreal really missed their opportunity with the 5 minute powerplay.

4th Star

In todays game St Louis won a close game, 3-2 against Montreal today. We had our 3 stars for today, but who came who with 4th star game award, and that would be Mika Kandinsky. Mika finished the game with a +2 rating, and got an important assist, his 7th assist this season, for the Scarecrow’s game winning goal with less than 5 minutes remaining. Also, Kandinsky won over 50 percent of his faceoffs, winning 17/29 in tonight’s win, and played an important role in taking over some of Muller’s duties when he was ejected in the 2nd period for spearing. Without his performance tonight the result may have looked a lot different.
