PGS S49 Game 64 Colorado vs Kelowna

Raptors Colorado Raptors vs Kelowna Knights Knights
Game Link

It’s Day 15 of our SMJHL regular season and we bring you coverage of the game between the Colorado Raptors (5-4-3) and the Kelowna Knights (7-4-1). Both teams headed into this one after a loss the day before and were looking to rebound. Each team elected to go with their number one goaltender, Knox Booth for Colorado, and Alexander Thorstrom for Kelowna.

1st Period:
Most of the action in the first happened within the first few minutes. Kelowna would ice the puck not even thirty seconds in. Colorado would win the faceoff after this and after a wide shot by Jake Peralta, rookie defender Lee Samson would pinch and blast one by the goaltender to pick up his first of the season. Kelowna would answer back shortly after with Vadim Malichov tipping a shot by Prince Devitt. Piotr Horvat would take an unfortunate hooking minor right after his team ties the game. Colorado would quickly retake the lead on this powerplay by a goal from Ja’Aj Ciotus-Wagg. He would miss on the beautiful tic tac toe pass from Derek Bohne Jr and Denver Wolfe but get it on from his own bounce off the glass. The period would end with a score 2-1 Colorado.

2nd Period:
Derek Bohne Jr would take a high sticking penalty and give Kelowna a chance to tie but nothing would come of this opportunity. Past the halfway point of the second our tipping point would happen. Andre Barbashev II would skate the puck in Colorado’s zone and pass to Alex Ranch who jumped up with him but this would be intercepted by Lee Samson. He would outlet pass to Emeka Valentine-Okoli and after some insane passes only the Colorado players could keep up with, Valentine-Okoli would deflect in a shot from Coitus-Wagg. The Raptors would get one more late goal from Bohne Jr and head into the 3rd up 4-1.

3rd Period:
There would be a few early penalties that no one would capitalize on. Colorado would score thirteen minutes into the period to go up 5-1 and give Coitus-Wagg his third point of the night. Kelowna would turn in on from here, although it would be too little too late. Josef Novotny would score on a breakaway after Bohne Jr made a neutral zone turnover. Coitus-Wagg ended up taking a very bad charging call with a minute and a half left, and Kelowna would end up scoring after a brief cycle.

Final Score:
Raptors 5 - 3 Knights

Three Stars:
1 - Emeka Valentine-Okoli (2G, GWG) Raptors
2- Lee Samson (1st Goal, 1A, +3) Raptors
3 - Ja’Aj Coitus-Wagg (1G, 2A) Raptors

Pick Battle: Ryan Shepard versus Vorian Atreides

Coming into this game a lot of people were excited to see a battle between the number one and two picks of the last SMJHL draft battling each other on the ice. Those who did come for the game for this turned out to be dissapoinment as neither of them made a real impact.
While Vorian Atreides played 15 minutes in total he only won 1 face off (since he is slotted as winger this season) and had just a single shot on goal. Shepard on the other hand could make some noise in the face off circle with winning over 50% of his attempts. But despite 1 hit and a minus 1 rating, he also went mostly unnoticed.
We hope to be able to see this matchup multiple times in the future to see how their careers progress.

Physical Play Comparison

This game had a lot of penalties both ways. Kelowna recorded a fair few more hits, though. All of those hits were spread out pretty evenly. Big Fudge had three on his own, but no one else had more than two. Similar story for Colorado. Bo Kane with three, and a few with one or two. The biggest standout to me is the five shots blocked by Berg Svensen for Kelowna. That is great to see. Unfortunately, those bruises didn’t get Kelowna the win. Close game, but Colorado had a bit better luck. I think the phsyical play was a push.

Goalie Battle
Tonight saw two veteran goaltenders go toe to toe between the pipes when Alexander Thorstrom of the Kelowna Knights and Knox Booth of the Colorado Raptors met for this hard fought competition. Both goalies came out a little bit rusty with Thorstrom giving up the first goal of the game less than a minute into regulation before allowing another goal later in the period and with Booth giving up one in between. Booth looked fantastic during the second period, while the same could not be said for Thorstrom, who allowed two. Thorstrom rebounded in the third, only allowing one goal while Booth let in two to bring the game back to a reasonable score.

Our defensive leader
Berg Svensen came out ready to play tonight, and showed us why he is being looked at as one of the top defensive prospects in the upcoming S50 SHL Draft. With a huge hit and five massive shots blocked, Svensen was dictating play out on the ice and ensuring that Thorstrom wasn't left out to dry. It's rare that we see a player of his defensive calibre really step up to the plate this early in his career, but I was pleasantly surprised to see that Svensen was being such a major contributor to the Kelowna Knights defense. Despite being our fiercest rivals in the league, I can still appreciate a fantastic game when I see one.

Rookie Watch
Ryan Shepard was our rookie of the game apart from Svensen despite his negative plus minus and lack of points. Shepard has adopted a role with the Knights as one of their two way stalwarts, and he didn't dissapoint in this game when he took a big hit in the middle of the ice and went on to be a dependable man at the draw. While he didn't have the offensive production that some of his peers did tonight, and he didn't quite have the numbers that Svensen did, Shepard showed that he can keep up with the best of players in an exciting way. He is certainly a top calibre center, but will need stronger linemates moving forward if he really wants to jump into the next tier.

Look at unexpected rookie:

Even as Estonia isn't well known for its great hockey players it has been interesting to see that Kalevolaripaavo Käspertommevisnapuu has been able to earn himself a place in second line of Kelowna Knights. During this match he was able to get assist in Vadim Malichov's 1-1 goal early in first period. During match he recorded four shots on goal.  As a winger he had to take two face-offs and was able to win them both. Kelowna Knights run all their lines with pretty equal times and Käspertommevisnapuu had 14 minutes and 25 seconds in total which of 3 minutes and 27 seconds were on overtime. Clearly showing during match that he is well worth his time on ice.

Rookie Performance Spotlight

Raptors Lee Samson Raptors
Samson had a fantastic defensive game by any standard. The rookie D-man has been great for the Raptors so far and tonight he really proved that he isn't only a defensive asset for his team but he is also capable of putting up strong offensive numbers. He put up one goal, one assist as well as blocking two shots and finishing with a +/- of +3 in his 17:11 minutes of ice time. His linemate, Gorbachenko, also had a solid game.

Knights Kalevolaripaavo Käspertommevisnapuu Knights
This kid doesn't only have the most difficult to pronounce name in the league, he also has some skill to boot! Käspertommevisnapuu (or Kakä as he is known in the lockeroom) has had a fairly strong rookie season and added to it in this game. He posted one apple and four shots on goal in 14:25 minutes of play time. Unfortunately his efforts were not enough to get the raiders a W.

Tonight, Colorado faced off against Kelowna in the SMJHL. Both teams put up a valiant fight, however the Raptors were able to squeak away victorious 5-3, due to two different factors. First, that Colorado had a few more blocked shots, limiting Kelowna’s scoring chance by a slim margin which got them the victory. Colorado finished the game with 11 blocked shot compared to Kelowna’s 9. And lastly, Colorado was able to limit their players in the box by the same margin of 2 again. This time they had the fewer of 8 compared to 10 minutes in the box. Because of this Colorado was able to secure an important power play goal early on, and did not the trail the entire game.

Did you know sticks are for playing the puck? Because Colorado and Kelowna sure don’t. With a massive 18 penalty minutes with all but 2 being for using their sticks to play people on ice over the puck. Coitus-Wagg gets an honorable mention for breaking up all the tripping, high sticking and hooking by going out of his way to fly across the ice to attempt to murder a Kelowna player for all we can assume was a previous sticking penalty. Now this does beg the question should we bother shooting the puck or should we merely be keeping score by how often we can slam opponents through the net with the stick? I guess if that was the new metric then Colorado and Kelowna would be leading the league after this game.

Goalie Woes
We've got a real high scoring game here folks, and you know what that means. That's right! Sad goalies. In net for Colorado was Knox Booth, saving 23 of 26 shots and picking up the W tonight with a cool .885 SV%. In the other end for Kelowna was Alexander Thorstrom, saving 22 of 27 shots for a not so stellar .815 SV%. Both netminders seemed to struggle tonight, getting off to slow starts in the first period as the score was 2-1 Colorado by just three and a half minutes in. Thorstrom seemed to hold strong and allow his team to make a surge late in the third period, but it would end up not being enough as his previous mistakes and Kelowna's inability to light the lamp ends up costing them the game.

Poor Discipline
This game was absolutely littered with penalties. With nine total penalties split as evenly as can be, four on Colorado and five on Kelowna, this game was a big battle of the special teams. One of the major culprits that contributed to the penalties this game was Kelowna's Piotr Horvat. Horvat took three penalties this game, all the same call: hooking. If he's looking to step up and improve for this Kelowna team, he's gonna have to learn how to control that stick and keep himself out of the penalty box. It wasn't just one bad period or a bad start to the game, he took the same call on three separate times each in a different period.

Rookie Roundup
Now that the rookies have had a little bit of a chance to settle into their teams, let's see how they did this game.
Kelowna
Ryan Shepard: 0G, 0A, -1, 0S, 1H
Gylfi Eriksson: 0G, 0A, -1, 1S, 0H
Partario Scarangella: 0G, 0A, -1, 0S, 1H
Kalevolaripaavo Kaspertommevisnapuu: 0G, 1A, +1, 4S, 0H
Andrey Barbashev II: 0G, 0A, -1, 0S, 0H
Berg Svensen: 0G, 0A, +1, 0S, 1H
Alex Ranch: 0G, 0A, -2, 0S, 0H

Colorado
Vorian Atreides: 0G, 0A, +0, 1S, 0H
First-Name Last-Name: 0G, 1A, +1, 2S, 0H
Henrik Lekberg Osterman: 0G, 0A, +0, 1S, 1H
Patrick Miller: 0G, 0A, +1, 1S, 0H
Nathaniel Voltguin: 0G, 0A, +0, 1S, 0H
Hariken Urawa: 0G, 0A, +0, 2S, 0H
Lee Samson: 1G, 1A, +3, 1S, 0H
Georgy Gorbachenko: 0G, 1A, +2, 1S, 0H
Daniel Kuster: 0G, 0A, +0, 0S, 1H

Lee Samson and First-Name Last-Name had incredible nights for Colorado driving offense and not letting very many offensive opportunities develop for Kelowna. These young players really stepped up their game and really pushed Colorado towards victory today. On the other side, many of the rookies for Kelowna failed to produce tonight. Included in that list is first overall pick Ryan Shepard who was -1 on the night and tallied one hit, hopefully he can pick up his game in the future. The only rookie that seemed to have a positive impact from Kelowna is Kalevolaripaavo Kaspertommevisnapuu, who tallied an assist, four shots on goal, and was +1 on the night.

PGS - COLORADO VERSUS KELOWNA

#1 - Scoring was spread out - While the teams played a hard-fought game, one thing stands out among the rest, and that is simply that out of the eight goals scored, there is seven goal scorers, only one player had a multi-goal night, which is somewhat surprising but also cool when you think about it. 4 of the 5 goals from Colorado and all 3 goals from Kelowna we're scored by different players. The only one to have a multi-goal night Valentine-Okoli who really let his shot fly, but otherwise, no bueno for the others. To further elaborate on this point, there was only two players with 3 points, one of them being on Kelowna who actually assisted on all three goals (Devitt) and a ton of multi-point players on Colorado, this was very much a fun game to review.

#2 - Penalty kill was stellar! - When you look at the penalty-kill numbers, you have to wonder just why the game wasn't even more explosive, but then you realize just how good these two teams shut one another down during powerplay attempts. There was a total of 9 powerplays between the two teams (5 for Raptors, 4 for Knights) and the teams only scored one goal each, that's it. The powerplay percentages were awful but as mentioned the PK was absolutely stunning. Had either of these teams been able to actually overcome the other teams PK, the score could've been even bigger than it actually was, and this game could've been completely different, but we're not here to ponder on the "what ifs", just simply to show just how good these special teams are.

#3 - There was a lot of face-offs taken!! - You don't really recognize just how many stoppages are in a game until you look at the total amount of face-offs taken and won per-team, and this game had a lot of them. In just 60 minutes of play, there was 83 face-offs taken, and they are split fairly evenly, with Colorado winning 38, and Kelowna winning 45. While Kelowna (the losers of the bout) won more, this game was a rare-case where the face-off winners usually take the cake, however the main focus is simply the fact that there was just so many of them in one game. The other stat that stands out to me as I previously touched on was that in 60 minutes, 83 face-offs were taken, this means that there was one roughly every 1.4 minutes of the game...how annoying would that be sitting there watching that shit? Lol.

The game started strong with three goals in as many minutes, but the key thing to note about this game between Colorado and Kelowna was how most of it was decided in the latter half of the periods. After the third goal in the third minute of the first period, the game quieted down until fourteen minutes into the second, where Emeka Valentine-Okoli would get the third Raptors goal of the night, followed by Derek Bohne Jr.'s tally to make it four to one for the Raptors. The last period featured three more goals, all again in the last half of the period, as Colorado struck once and the Knights twice to end the game at five to three, respectively. Maybe the key for these teams is just playing the first ten minutes of the game and then the last ten of each period, it might be confusing and convoluted, but frankly I can't see any other explanation for these unusual goals.

(Losing) Player of the Game

Prince Devitt (D) – Prince Devitt played a great game for the Kelowna Knights against the Colorado Raptors. Devitt had three assists. The first came during the first period on a goal by Vadim Malichov and the second and third came in the third period on goals by Josef Novotny and Tah Puhcheese respectively. Devitt himself had two shots on goal in the first and second periods. He also landed a hit on the Raptors right wing Patrick Miller and blocked a shot by Emeka Valentine-Okoli. Playing on both the power play and the penalty kill adds to the qualifications Devitt has for receiving (Losing) Player of the Game.
