Game 77  Scarecrows vs.  Whalers

                 Crows vs. Whalers

Meeting for the fourth time this season, St. Louis looked to build on their recent success and tie the season series up at 2 games apiece. Previous games have been low-scoring affairs, with 4-1 being the biggest scoreline. Boy, that would change.

Period 1: The first period started out with a bang for the Crows, as only six seconds after puck drop, Mika potted home his 6th of the season (Yikes). It didn’t end there, as St. Louis continued to apply pressure, resulting in the a couple of icings in a row from the Whalers. The Crows capitalized, taking a 2-0 lead just over 3 and a half minutes into the game. With Vancouver reeling, St. Louis went for the throat, and with some contributions from their new rookies, were up 4-0 less than 6 minutes into the game. Double Yikes. Strudwick and Phoenix got the first of their careers, making 3 and 4-0, with Hernandivic picking up his first helper on Strudwick’s goal. Whalers goalie Burzawa, after giving up 4 goals on the first 5 shots on net, was yanked, with ZZ Snoop Lion entering the game at the 5:45 mark. This settled Vancouver down, and they were able to get one back on the power-play at 13:42, with Zacha picking up his 3rd of the year. However, the Crows’ Blackwood responded less than a minute later. On the first shot Snoop faced, he was unable to bail his team out, restoring the 4 goal lead for the Crows. Quiet for the next few minutes, Vancouver was able to make it a 5-2 game at the 19:20 mark, with Bobcalf getting his 8th of the season. Weiser won the ensuing face-off, but a turnover gave the puck back to Mika, and for the second time today, only 6 seconds after puck drop, Mika skated down and made it a 6-2 game. Ouch.

Period 2: The second period started out much better for the Whalers, as they were able to prevent Mika from scoring a third goal 6 seconds after puck drop. This period, they were able to hold St. Louis off, until the 5:05 mark when Brusky buried his second of the game. Back and forth hockey ensued, with Snoop Lion and Vitalievich making a number of solid saves. At the 11:24 mark, Muller made it 8-2 for the Crows, Snoop got the hook, and Burzawa re-entered the game. OOF. Tough day for the Whalers. After re-entering the game, Burzawa made a number of key stops to keep this game from getting further out of hand. Gray got the Whalers back on the board, but Dangelchek responded with his first of the season, making it a 9-3 game heading into the third. Can they get to 10?

Period 3: The third period was slow, as both teams coasted to the end. Burzawa was able to keep a clean sheet this period, stopping all of the 7 shots he faced. Vancouver’s Reider manged to sneak away shorthanded, scoring the last goal of the game with just under 6 minutes remaining, culminating in a final score line of 9-4 for the Crows. Tough days for the Whaler goalie tandem, giving up 9 goals on 31 shots.

Final Score 9-4 St. Louis

3 Stars
1 - Noah Brusky (STL) (2G, 1A, +4)
2 - Nicolaj Muller (STL) (1G, 3A, +4)
3 - Barrett Blackwood (STL) (1G, 2A, +4)

Losers Bright Points

While the Vancouver Whalers lost bigtime this game, it is still possible to find some positives for them into this game. The positives wont be named Leppanen and Toeman though as they had a night they would rather forget with both having a -6 rating.
Mikas Bieksa for instance had a two point game tonight and was the only person on the team that ended on a positive plus/minus rating. While Ackroyd and Claude also had neutral ratings and 2 assists a piece. The Whalers still seem to be solid at creating chances and need to hope their defense will have some better days, as having four goals a night, can always win you the game.

What a game this was between the St. Louis Scarecrow and the Vancouver Whalers. Fans were granted a great game with lots of goals. The first period alone had eight goals, six for the Scarecrows to take a commanding 6-2 lead, as well as the 4-0 lead early on. The Scarecrows only continued their dominance of this game, getting three more goals in the second period and ended up winning this game in the end 9-4 which is a really really big win. Oddly, the Scarecrows only had 4 more shots in the game, but somehow got 5 more goals. Incredible game!

It is allways hard to find good replacement for your main goalie when he get called up to SHL. This time Whalers had Michal Burzawa starting in net for second time this season. In his first game he had 5 saves from 9 shots - (0.556 s%) while playing for 24:08 minutes before being replaced by ZZSnoop Lion for rest of the game. Versus St. Louis he ended up staying in net for 5 minutes 45 seconds while letting in 4 goals. He was later let back at 11:24 of second period when St. Louis scored their 8-2 goal. He ended game with 11 saves from 16 shots - (0.688 s%) in 34:21 minutes played, while improvement over his first game his play isn't nearly at level you would wan't from your backup.

Rookie Performance Spotlight
This game really was a dominant performance by the Scarecrows and the rookies came to impress. This time we will be doing things a little bit different and so we will focus entirely on the performance of the top 5 St Louis rookies of this game.

Scarecrows Aron Hernadivic Scarecrows
First on our list is Hernadivic who had a well rounded game and managed to get a lot done in only 10:10 minutes of ice time. Offensively he posted two assists and one shot on goal as well as two solid, clean hits. He shares the third line with Dangelchek and Strudwick, two other rookies who made the list tonight.

Scarecrows Richard Hurtz Scarecrows
Just like Hernadivic, Hurtz managed to post two apples in this big game from his club. Other than that his game was fairly uneventful, but two assists still places him in solidly in our top 5 for this game. He played a total of 11:20 minutes.

Scarecrows Colton Strudwick Scarecrows
Strudwick also had an impressive game, scoring on his only shot on goal as well as posting a 57% Face-off winning percentage in his 13:30 minutes of ice time. His strong face-off game really helped the third line be effective tonight.

Scarecrows Blake Phoenix Scarecrows
Fourth liner Blake Phoenix added to his teams dominant display this evening with a goal as well as two shots on goal and one blocked shot. He spent 10:59 minutes on the ice and 2:00 minutes in the sin bin after taking a minor penalty for roughing.

Scarecrows Sasha Dangelchek Scarecrows
The third and final player on the all rookie third line, Dangelchek added another goal for St Louis with his one shot on goal. He spent 10:09 minutes on the ice and 2:00 minutes in the sin bin after taking a minor penalty interference.

Who's Saves Are These Anyway?

The Whalers fans in the stands starting leaving midway through the second period, and honestly, who can blame them? When Nikolaj Muller capped an already impressive three-assist game with a power play goal, the spirits of the Vancouver faithful was shattered. They had already seen starter Michal Burzawa getting whacked harder than a piñata at a four-year old's birthday party, only to see backup ZZSnoop Lion unable to stop the hemorrhaging of goals. The game saw St. Louis' first line finish with 9 points, and even their fourth line contributed to the goal fiesta in Vancouver. This is truly a game to forget for the Whalers (especially since it comes at the tail of a seven game losing streak), but the Scarecrows will want to use this game as a stepping stone following a few bad outings.

Faceoff Percentages
We’re back with another faceoff percentage analysis.  In overall statistics, the scarecrows won 46 of the potential 86 faceoffs earning them a 53% win percentage for this game against the whalers who only took the remained 40 for themselves.  Even if the game looked one sided, one thing to note is Whalers player Marcus Weiser who won 10 out of 13 of his faceoffs earning him a 77% win rate.  Marcus, a rookie, is clearly still a developing player and if he can throw up these kind of numbers we could see a new star center being born.  If he starts playing 1st or 2nd line minutes maybe we could get a glimpse at a player truly being able to hold sway over the game.

The Power Play

Let’s talk about something that the Whalers got right this game.  Their power play units on offense and defense were stunning.  With 4 opportunities, the boys managed to capitalize on 2 of them for much needed morale.  In the 3rd period, their penalty kill team gave the final smack down by earning a shorthanded goal showing that their special teams will be something to contend with if they can get through a slump like this game where they were dominated in the 5v5.  Good training for them after the game seemed unwinnable. If they can work on their penalty skills we could see them getting in some sneaky points against unsuspecting opponents.  The league should really watch out for this.

When the Game Got Away

It was a bad start for Vancouver, when the Scarecrows scored 6 seconds into the game. It's pretty much choice which point the game got away from Vancouver, but probably the 3rd goal. 2-0 in the 1st period isn't great, but 3 goals in the first 5 minutes is when you see the game is gone from you. You could also point to the time when the Whalers switched goalies for the SECOND time in the game. The game was already 8-2 at that point, but it's not very often you see a goalie pulled and put back in. I guess the Whalers coaching staff still felt they were in it, since they decided to put their starter back in. Really though, the game was lost about 5 minutes in, hard to argue otherwise.

(Losing) Player of the Game

Kaspars Claude (D) – Kaspars Claude is my (Losing) Player of the Game despite not scoring a single goal in a 4-9 loss for the Vancouver Whalers to the St. Louis Scarecrows. Claude did, however, get two assists both in the first period, one on a goal by Jan Zacha and the other on a goal by Bobby Bobcalf. As well as these assists, he also had three shots on goal of his own, one in each period. He landed two hits against James Ronlain in the first period and Colton Strudwick in the second period and managed to block three shots as well. His achievements on both offense and defense have earnt him (Losing) Player of the Game.

Tid Bits

In a thrilling, high scoring game the Scarecrows beat the Whalers today 9-4. Interestingly, 8 out of the 13 goals scored in this game came in the first period. Also, Mika Kandinsky scored one of the fastest goals in SMJHL history, only 6 seconds into the game. Another fascinating fact from tonight’s game, not a single player for St Louis scored a hat trick. Also, remarkable statistic from this game, Lyle Odelein III finished with the best +/-, +5, and was not one of the 3 stars this game. Which is why he gets the unsung hero of the game award. Even if Odelein may not be as flashy as the other Scarecrow players today, he went out there and did his job.
