PGS 49: Game 45 Halifax @ Kelowna
#1
(This post was last modified: 08-17-2019, 07:08 PM by RaiN.)

Welcome Ladies, Gentleman and children of all ages! Tonight, I bring you an up to the minute game summary between the Kelowna Knights who are hosting the Halifax Raiders. This is game 45 on the SMJHL seasons calendar and it was sure a dandy. Without further ado, let’s dive right into it!

1st Period

A very fast paced start to this game as both teams go back and forth on chances at each end. On a fast rush, Halifax attempts to gain the zone on a 3 on 2. The back-checker Alex Ranch burst down the middle of the lane and obstructs the Halifax forward who is about to receive the puck. Alex Ranch of the Knights ultimately conducts our first penalty of the game at 3:14 of the first as he gets called for holding. Halifax was however unsuccessful on their first power play. Later in the play, Prince Devitt of Kelowna is in a battle of position in front of the Kelowna netminder. He gets his arms up in the face of the Raiders forward screening in front, then frustration gets the best of him as he swings his fist towards to same Raiders forward after the whistle. This causes a scuffle in front as well as a double minor penalty on Devitt for roughing. After a few unsuccessful attempts, Halifax creates a two on one in front with an amazing keep in by Esa on the play. Kubinec sets up Klozoff back door for the cross crease tap in to make it 1-0 Halifax at 17:39 of the 1st.

2nd Period

Some rough stuff carried over from the 1st period as Timmo Kyllonen high sticks a Kelowna player, almost seemed intentional as there was a puck battle in front of the Halifax goal. Shortly after Knights 3rd line winger Gylfi Eriksson responds with a high stick of his own back on Kyllonen. No blood was drawn on either occasion, however both teams received a warning from the officials immediately after the Eriksson high stick. Shortly after the 10 minute mark of the 2nd, theres a scramble in front with Kelowna whacking a way at a possible loose puck, Aleksandr Scherbak ends up lifting the puck over Biz Nasty’s paddle and ties the game up at 1 a-piece. We head into the 3rd with the score tied at 1.

3rd Period

This is where special teams really came into play, Halifax already solved the Knights PK once on the double minor, and they end up doing it again as Cody scores his 4th of the season with a wrist shot from the top of the circle that beats Blake clean. At 10:29 in the 3rd, Raiders forward Kubinec is called for hooking sending Kelowna to their 3rd power play of the game. As time winds down on the penalty, Malichov takes a sneaky snap shot that appears to go off of a defender in front, but nonetheless, the puck ends up in the back of the net. The Score is tied at 2 and there is no further scoring despite Halifax getting a 6th power play attempt late in the period. Kelowna, however, holds down the fort and pushes the game to overtime.

Overtime:

Overtime was rather uneventful with the exception of one shot from Puhcheese who attempted to shelf Biz Nasty.

Shootout:

It takes 4 rounds with 3 goals total for what turned out to be a very exciting shootout contest with Halifax picking up the extra point over the Knights.

DotG - Bryan Lee (Center, Knights )

Dud of the Game goes to Kelowna's Bryan Lee, who went pointless and won 2 out of 5 faceoffs. He was also the first Knight to shoot, and the first to miss, as the puck got away from him before he could even aim it toward the net. A night to forget for the Austrian center.

⭐⭐⭐ - Biz Nasty (Goaltender,  raiders )

Halifax's Biz Nasty comes in at 3rd star. The Russian net-minder made 31 saves on 33 shots, including a world-class save on Kelowna's Kalevolaripaavo Kaspertommevisnapuu in the last minute of regulation. Knights forward managed to sneak one past him in the shootout, but otherwise Nasty performed excellently, stopping the other three for the shootout win.

⭐⭐ - Vadim Malichov (Center, Knights )

Boisterous power forward Vadim Malichov joins his fellow country-men on the podium with a 2 shots, 3 hits, and the game-tying goal. Highlights include an all-star deflection on the power-play at 12:12 of the 3rd period. The shot from teammate Aleksandr Scherbak came in at a blazing speed but Malichov managed to get a stick on it to topple the puck past Biz Nasty and even things up.

- Aleksandr Scherbak (Center, Knights )

Kelowna's speedy sniper Aleksandr Scherbak takes top honors with a goal and an assist, topping off an all-Russian podium. Scherbak had a whopping six shots, some of them from high danger areas, and the Raiders had to be wary of his release even in dead zones on the ice. Despite the loss, Aleksandr played at a level above most of the rest.

Weird SMJHL: Sterling Slaughter V Plays :45 Against Raiders

In an unusual statistical anomaly, Sterling Slaughter V @ItsLTH logged only :45 seconds of ice time for the Kelowna Knights in last night's shootout loss to the Halifax Raiders.

Originally submitted as a healthy scratch for the game, Slaughter V was a last minute substitution into the lineup in place of his father, Sterling Slaughter @LTH , who also plays for the Knights. The coaching staff was concerned with the elder Slaughter's health, can kept the veteran out of the lineup as a precaution.

However, Slaughter V didn't touch the ice at all in the first two periods, sitting firmly on the bench as the other Knights played. After Slaughter V, the next lowest Knight in terms of time-on-ice was Jason Bergenty @Shardonius, who played 6:43.

Slaughter V touched the ice only twice. He was on for 11 seconds of a power play in the third period, when the coaches threw him out with Bryan Lee to give the first and second units a quick chance to rest. He also came on in overtime, stepping onto the ice with rookie sensation Ryan Shepard @Naosu for the remaining :34 of his time-on-ice.

"Yeah, weird night for sure," said Slaughter V after the game. "I don't know if I even broke a sweat to be honest. Hopefully I'll get in some more next game."

The Halifax Raiders faced the Kelowna Knights in an extremely tight game. Halifax took the lead in the first period, but the Knights came back in the second period to tie it up. Halifax took the lead in the third period after a power-play goal, but a few minutes later, Kelowna came back with a power-play goal of their own to tie it up again. After a scoreless period in overtime, that meant shootouts would happen. There, Halifax managed to sneak out a victory by scoring two shootout goals to Kelowna's one and managed to get the big win over the Knights.

Physical Play Comparison

I love these 40+ hit games. We got a big performance from Adam Barron on Halifax with 5 hits. Kelowna, on the other hand, is very spread out. 4 Knights had 3 hits each, and few others with 2. Kelowna both outshot and outblocked Halifax. This is a bit surprising because Halifax had twice as many chances on the powerplay with 6 to Kelowna’s 3. This extra time on the penalty kill is most likely where Kelowna racked up those extra blocked shots. Overall I give Kelowna the edge in the battle of physical play, but it just wasn’t enough to overcome the penalties.

This game between the Knights and the Raiders was the 3rd game this season and the 3rd longest shootout, early into this season. Both goalies, Biz Nasty and Rob Blake, this game had outstanding individual performances having over a 92 save percentage. Which keep the game draw at 2-2, heading into the shootout.

The first two skaters went, Kubinec and Lee, both which were saved by the goalie. The second attempts were taken by, Cody and Novotny, both of whom were successful. Cody was able to secure the first goal by dropping a well placed deke and dumping it over Blake. Novotny took a different approach and ripped a clean wrist shot over Nasty to tie it back up. Unfortunately, that was the Knights last shootout goal for the night. Ricky Spanish secured the game winning goal for the Raiders in the 4th round as Blake left his 5 hole open, and Biz Nasty was one of the three stars helping the Raiders get the extra point on the night.

Shootout Hero

While the Knights where 2-1 behind with 13 minutes left in the game they put up an offensive show but did not manage to push themselves past the Raiders. In overtime we also didn’t see a winner so we went to the shootout. Both teams were able to take four attempts before a winner was crowned. The first round both Blake and Nasty stopped the shots, the second round both Cody and Novotny managed a goal.
While we were 1-1 the Raiders missed the net so they refused to take a lead, but for the Raiders there was one person who didn’t want to lose. Biz Nasty also stopped attempts three and four, while Ricky Spanish scored the last shootout for Halifax.
Nasty stopping three out of four attempts, made him the true shootout hero.

Rookie Performance Spotlight

raiders Adam Barron raiders
Although the stats for this game we're not great for any rookie they definitely don tell the whole story. This game was incredibly close all the way through with plenty of physicality and Adam Barron, although lacking in any scoring statistics, he really stepped up and took charge in this game and lead the game in hits delivered with five big ones. This along with his 19:05 minutes played proved to combine for quite the impressive performance by the rookie.

Knights Andrey Barbashev II Knights
As previously mentioned this game was not a great showcase of rookie scoring ability but just like Barron did for the Raiders, Barbashev stepped up physically when his team needed the added presence on the ice. He ended the game with three hits and three shots, managing to combine the physical play that we are getting used to seeing from him with some decent offensive chances, although he unfortunately didn't get rewarded for his effort.

Face-Off Analysis

This game was pretty close to perfect for both sides of the ice.  In this game we see that the Knights managed to take 51% of the face-offs back to their team.  This was a close contest with only 79 face-offs taken, the Knights brought back 40 of them in a stylish fashion.  If we look at the rookie centers we see that neither played a stellar performance in this game.  With Brian Lee getting 2/5 and Ryan Shepard pulling in 6/13 neither reached that percentage that the team as a whole managed to get.  If the Knights can get these two centers to up their play in their next game we should see a little more production from these two lines.

Great Goaltending Gives Great Games

Tonight, we saw an absolute showdown, between an experienced netminder in the league, and a young undrafted rookie looking to make a name for himself, and boy was it a doozy! Edmonton Blizzard draft pick and Halifax Raiders' starting goalie Biz Nasty was facing fresh new face Rob Blake, who has been touted by some as a player to watch in the upcoming SHL draft, and neither goalie seemed to want to surrender an inch to their opponent. The game was an open affair, with scoring chances galore, but both netminders steadied the course for their respective team. Even more impressive, is that young Blake surrendered no goals at 5v5! Unfortunately, that's where his incredible night ended, as Ricky Spanish was able to beat him in the 5th round of the shootout to give Halifax, and Nasty, a well-earned win.

Tonight we saw a tight match up between teams. Halifax finished with 21 hits in this match up vs 23 for Kelowna. Halifax ended with 39 shot blocks vs 40 for Kelowna, so again we are very tight here. Physical play these teams were very similar tonight, but there is 1 single outlier that may have lead to Kelowna's demise in this game: Penalties. Kelowna took 6 penalties this game whereas Halifax only took 3. They each scored on 33%, but with double the amount of opportunities that Kelowna had, Halifax had a clear advantage in this category. They scored an additional power play goal. If Kelowna was able to clean up their game a little bit, they may have been able to squeak out a regulation or overtime victory. That extra point could go a long way at the end of season standings with how tight the league has been this year.

There's some real bad blood between these two teams, both playing hard and fast into each other. The Halifax Raiders and Kelowna Knights both had some flashes of physicality that threatened to upend the entire game, thanks to the double minor roughing of Prince Devitt in the first period, and the mirrored high sticks in the second. The first scuffle led to Halifax claiming the lead early on by converting on the power play, but the second set of incidents needed a clearer message to stop the roughing game before it got out of hand. Timmo Kyllonen would high stick a Knights player in the second period, just to get a high stick to the face right after from Gylfi Eriksson in retaliation. While you might think that's the end of the story, four more penalties would occur in the third period. While I'm not one to blame the refs much, this was certainly a game they needed to maintain a handle on better.
