Raptors Colorado Raptors vs Anchorage Armada  Armada

Evening everybody and welcome! Tonight, we are finishing off our first week of SMJHL games with a stint between the Colorado Raptors (1-2-2) and the Anchorage Armada (2-3-0). Not a great start to the season for either of our teams here so they will be looking to make the most out of this game tonight and get some momentum from a win here this evening. Starting goalies will be Knox Booth (.840SV%) for the Raptors and Colt Beckett (.891SV%) for the Armada.

Our players to watch tonight are
Raptors  Bo Kane   : Colorado's top goal scorer and undeniably the MVP of the team so far. He will be looking to add to his impressive totals.

Armada  Raphael D'Alcott  : D'Alcott has had a fantastic start to the season. His production has really been top notch. Look for him to have another fantastic performance tonight.

1st Period
After winning an early face-off in the defensive zone, Primaeu is hit by Kane which leads to a turnover. The puck is then picked up by Peralta who passes it to Miller. Miller lets loose an absolute cannon that gets past Beckett (1:18, Raptors 1-0 Armada ). The following three minutes, two of which they spend with a one-man advantage, the Raptors put up one hell of an offensive onslaught but the Armada weather the storm. Approximately six minutes in, the Armada would go on to have their first powerplay of the game after Valentino-Okoli took a minor penalty for interference. Unfortunately they only managed one shot which was blocked by Bohne Jr. Atreides would score shortly thereafter from a missed shot by Kane with Bohne Jr receiving a secondary assist (9:18, Raptors 2-0  Armada ). The second half of the first period was fairly uneventful, with most of the time being spent in the neutral zone.

2nd Period
The first 5 minutes of the 2nd period carried over from the first with most of the time being spent in the neutral zone. At about the half way mark the Armada muster up a strong offensive push after Wolfe takes a minor from hooking. This is followed by a counter-attack by the Raptors which resulted in a goal from Peralta with an assist from Miller (13:13, Raptors 3-0 Armada ). The rest of the period was spent almost entirely in the Raptors defensive zone, the Armada really put up a strong offensive showing. Perhaps out of frustration or overload, Booth takes a slashing penalty, putting the raptors down a man once again. This ultimately leads to a powerplay goal by Larsen with assists from Wang and Halkias  (18:22,  Raptors 3-1 Armada ), cutting the Raptors lead to two and gaining some needed momentum going into the third.

3rd Period
All signs pointed towards a strong push from the Armada coming into the third. However, Colorado completely changed their gameplan and started to play a physical and defensively focused game that seemed to throw Anchorage off their game and responding with equally hard play. The physical play was spontaneously interrupted multiple times with short offensive stints from both the teams. The last minute of the game was spent in the Colorado zone with the Armada putting on a strong offensive effort but ultimately coming up short.

Final Score
Raptors 3-1 Armada

Three Stars
1.  Raptors Jake Peralta (1G, 1A)
2.  Raptors Patrick Miller (1G, 1A)
3.  Raptors Vorian Atreides (1G, GWG)

The Colorado Raptors faced the Anchorage Armada in a game between two very good teams. Colorado dominated this game in terms of shots, 27 to 18 and with that came an early lead in the first period, where they scored two goals. After the Raptors scored another goal in the second period, they were up 3-0 and seemed to cruise towards a victory, but the Armada didn't give up yet and scored their own goal in the second period to make it 3-1. In the end, that was all though, as the game went scoreless in the third period and the Raptors celebrate a big win.

Physical Play Comparison

Here we have a fairly unremarkable game in terms of checking. No outstanding performances in the hits department. Vorian Atreides had three for Colorado, while Anderi Petrikov had three for Anchorage. There is a little bit we can take away from the block totals. Colorado took four penalties to Anchorage’s one. Most of these are careless stick penalties, which is frustrating to see. However, this doesn’t show up in the shots blocked. This tells me that Colorado really controlled play in the Anchorage zone whent the teams were even strength. Still, you have to appreciate the willingness to block a shot at this level.

First career goal for Vorian Atreides

It is still early in the season as it was the fifth game for the Colorado Raptors but rookie Vorian Atreides not only scored his first goal of his career in the SMJHL, but he also made sure it was the goal that gave the Raptors the win against the Anchorage Armada. Atreides scored with assists of Bo Kane and Derek Bohne Jr’s.
We do not expect much of Atreides as he is still adjusting to playing this game as he had never played hockey before, but with his potential we expect a larger contribution in the upcoming years, but for now he has broken the ice.

Face-Offs

We tried to look into the root of the problem here in Anchorage for this game that got away from them and we can successfully say it was not due to losing faceoffs.  The Armada managed to take 42 out of the 73 potential face-offs netting a percentage of 58%.  With a slight edge on the face-offs we have to say that the centers here were doing their job in starting off the plays for their team.  If the Aramada can keep rolling with a positive face-off percentage like this then they can focus on developing other areas of their attack and defense.  The offensive play only starts when your team has the puck.  Good for the Armada to keep it swayed in their favor.

Ghost Ship
The Anchorage Armada didn't show up tonight. On paper, they didn't do so badly. They won over half the face-offs, they outhit Colorado, and they took less penalties. But still they were badly outshot and overall outplayed throughout the whole game. At the end of the day, it comes down to effort. The Armada aren't winning the race to the puck, instead they're coming in for the big hit afterward. They aren't moving their feet to stay in position, they aren't battling hard along the boards or in deep. To win hockey games, when all other things are equal, the team has to just want it more. The Anchorage Armada I saw tonight clearly did not want to win. I hope each player will take a long hard look at himself after tonight and figure out what it will take to start working hard again, because at this point the season is a write-off.

Landlubbers
The Anchorage Armada are playing their rookies a lot more than Colorado. The armada rookies averaged 15 minutes of ice time tonight, compared to Colorado's 14. Looking deeper, the spread between the highest and lowest played rookie is much wider for Colorado. No Armada rookie played less than 11 minutes tonight, where about half of Colorado's rookies played less than 11 minutes (with 3 even playing less than 10 minutes). Perhaps over-reliance on rookies is another reason why Anchorage couldn't seem to generate any sustained offensive pressure tonight. But maybe, giving their rookies the space and time to try things and make mistakes now will pay dividends when playoffs come around.

Anchors Aweigh
Armada rookie Augustus Wang scored his first point tonight, an assist on the lone Anchorage goal by Jonas Larsen. Late in the second period, Wang thrusted deep into the Raptor's end on the heels of a fast break, retrieving a loose puck down low and curling up towards the slot. His shot went wide, but it was able to be picked up behind the net by Larsen who gracefully reached around the net to tuck it in neatly on the far side. We might never know for sure, but I swear I saw Wang look over to find Larsen before even letting his shot go, which begs the question: was it really a missed net? Or did Wang show wisdom beyond his years and cleverly slap a pass to Larsen behind the net without anyone anticipating?

Comment 1 Analysis of Rookie forwards

Colorado Forwards combined for 3 points tonight with two goals and an assist coming between Miller and Atredies. The remainder of the Colorado rookie forwards were also buzzing tonight with almost all of them being on the ice for at least a single goal for. Not much went wrong for these rookies tonight and it showed in the final score of the game.

Anchorage rookies didnt find the score sheet and were a detriment to the team out there tonight. Hopefully these guys pick it up as the season progresses as the number of rookies getting sizable ice time for the armada is higher than normal

Overall: Colorado rookies killed it tonight. Not much else can be said here. The guys were buzzing from the first puck drop. Anchorage rookies need to do a better job matching the intensity of their opposition.

Comment 2 Analysis of Rookie Defensemen

apart from a -2 on the score sheet Michaud didnt do anything tonight that would be considered positive. Being match up against other members of his class, Michaud looked outmatched. Wang on the other hand played well and even took part in the lone goal for the Armada tonight.

Colorado defensmen didnt play a direct role in their teams goals tonight, but they were out there during those times and for sure played an indirect role. These guys again were buzzing tonight and Anchorage struggled to get anything going against them.

Overall: Colorado defense just made Anchorage look silly out there. Although Wang found the score sheet, it is not enough to overcome the dominance of the COL guys at both ends of the ice.

Comment 3 Analysis of Rookie Goalies

Neither Colorado nor Anchorage played a rookie in the net tonight. Here at rookie watch we were hoping to see the new guy Venables play between the piped tonight for Anchorage, but the management decided to stick with the veteran leader in becket to start the season. This is an interesting situation to watch, as Venables is apparently making lots of noise in the LR for Anchorage with his play at the practice rink. We hope to see him take over the starting role from Becket in the near future, possibly within the next week or so as he quickly develops into both a leader and top caliber net minder for the Armada.

(Losing) Player of the Game

Augustus Wang (D) – Wang, one of the Armada's newest players, scored his first-ever point in the game against the Raptors, getting an assist on the Armada's only goal this game scored by Jonas Larsen. He made one shot on goal during the first period and soon after followed this by stopping two shots by Crudelli and Coitus-Wagg in quick succession. He also managed to lay a successful hit on Patrick Miller. Even though he is only a rookie, Wang was undoubtedly Anchorage's star player in this game. Although Jonas Larsen did also do extremely well, Augustus Wang deserves to win the (Losing) Player of the game.

Three Stars of the Game

1 - Jake Peralta Raptors

With no surprise, our first star of the game goes to Brooklyn's finest detective turned hockey pro, Jake Peralta. Jake offered up the first assist of the night only 1:08 into the 1st period. He followed that with a single shot on goal tonight, but it hit home. These 2 points and an impressive showing through 200 feet of ice put him in our first star of the game slot.

2 - Patrick Miller Raptors

Patrick Miller was Jake's partner in crime for the night. Coincidentally - he was the primary assist for Jake's goal, and Jake provided him with the primary on his own. Their stats sheet look almost identical tonight, but Jake's additional hit and contributions on the defensive side of the house put Patrick in a very close second.

3 - Vorian Atreides Raptors

Vorian was able to bring in the only other goal of the night. Vorian has not been known for his sniping talents, but tonight's goal was a beauty. After winning a crucial faceoff in the Raptors zone he and Bo Kane pushed hard on Colt Beckett. Bo took the initial shot which went wide, but Vorian picked it up and took a no-angle shot that went off of Colt's shoulder and into the net. Likely a contender for shot of the week.

In today’s game, Colorado was able to secure the win over Anchorage 3-1. Reviewing the stats for todays game, make it seem much closer than the score shows. The Raptors outshot their opponents, 27-18, but besides that the Armada blocked more shots, won more faceoffs, and committed less penalties tonight. Aside from the 3 stars from tonight, Derek Bohne Jr. deserves an honorable mention for his performance. Bohne finished the night with an assist and a +1, as well as getting 2 hits and shots blocked for Colorado. An all around good performance from the second line defenseman, showing his contribution both offensively and defensively tonight getting the 4th star in my book.

First Comment: Szlerchek’s 3 Keys to Colorado’s Win

Colorado had their way in this game against the Anchorage Armada, winning it 3-1.  Here are my 3 keys as to why they won.  First was the early jump they had on the Armada, scoring just 1:18 into the first period.  Patrick Miller’s first goal of the season, knocked the Armada back on their heels, to which they were not able to recover.   Second was the play of their goaltender Knox Booth, who stopped 17 of 18 shots he faced.  His only blemish was his own doing when he took a penalty late in the second period, and Anchorage was able to score on the ensuing powerplay.  The third key was the contributions from the Raptors’ third line.  The line of Jake Peralta, First-Name Last-Name, and Patrick Miller finished a +2, with a combined 4 shots and 2 hits amogst them.  Both Miller and Peralta finished with a goal and an assist each, leading to 4 points for the line.

Second Comment: Pahajaarinen’s 3 Keys to Anchorage’s Loss

The Anchorage Armada never really seemed to be in this game against the Colorado Raptors. They lost 3-1, with their lone goal being a powerplay goal late in the second period. First key to their lost was the lack of offensive chances. The Armada were only able to get 18 shots on goal, 8 of which came in the third period. The lack of shots in the first two periods, ultimately saw them down 3-0, before the aforementioned powerplay tally. The second key was the inability to take advantage of more of their powerplay chances. While the Armada only took one penalty themselves, they were provided 4 chances by the Raptors. The Armada scored on their third powerplay, when Raptors’ goalie, Knox Booth, was still distracted by the penalty he had taken. My last key is Anchorage’s lack of momentum after their first goal. With so few shots before their first goal, one would think that scoring late in the second on so few shots would give a team a shot in the arm. Instead, we saw Colorado outplay Anchorage in the third, outshooting the Armada 9-8.

Third Comment: AGH’s Closer Look at the First Star

This week’s game between the Colorado Raptors and the Anchorage Armada, saw a dominating win by Colorado with a final of 3-1. This was thanks due to the play of center Jake Peralta. Peralta is a long time veteran of the SMJHL, now playing in his fourth season with the Raptors. A third round pick of the Hamilton Steelhawks in the season 47 draft, Peralta is likely playing the last season of his hockey career. He centers the third line between rookie wingers, First-Name Last-Name and Patrick Miller. Mainly used now to mentor younger players, Peralta’s play tonight was important to his team’s victory. He played nearly 13 minutes in the game, while two of those were on the PK, showing that the team still trusts him a man down. His play on the PK helped limit the Armada from getting back in the game, as they only allowed one powerplay goal against on four tries. While his faceoff prowess was weak being only 5 of 13, he made up for it on the scoreboard. He assisted on the opening goal by Miller just 1:18 into the game, and later scored on his only shot of the game to give the Raptors a 3-0 lead. A lead that was never in doubt. His play was a key factor to Colorado’s win, and was deserving of the first star.
