PGS S49 Game 46 Colorado Raptors vs Anaheim Outlaws
#1

Hello all, and welcome to tonight's showdown between the Colorado Raptors and Anaheim Outlaws.   This is the third matchup between these two teams this season with Anaheim up 2-0 in the series.  However, don't let that fool you as both games have been won by a single goal so tonight's game should be action packed.

First Period

The game gets going quickly with Anaheim taking 3 shots on goal within the first 35 seconds of the first period.  None of the 3 find a home in the back of the net though and Colorado takes control and begins to push back.  A few shots ring close for both sides up until 3:39 when Henrik Osterman takes a minor penalty for high sticking that puts Anaheim on the Power Play for the first time.  Colorado managed to kill off 1:50 of the power play when Nick Connolly takes his 4th shot of the night, but it goes wide.   Anaheim forward Lallo Selman scoops up the puck near the boards, passes to defenseman Jerry Mander and he whips a quick wrist shot towards the net and sneaks it by Knox Booth for the first goal of the night and his 3rd for the year and closes the Power Play down with a goal.

Anaheim siezes the momentum and keeps the pressure on Colorado and Nick Connolly is able to bring home his 4th goal of the season only 2:24 later off of his own rebound extending Anaheim's lead.   1:30 later Georgy Gorbachenko takes a big hit from Jerry Mander and it seems to rattle his cage a bit.  Georgy is called for an Interference minor seconds later and puts Anaheim back on the Power Play.  The Outlaws fire off 7 shots on the Power Play but the Raptors PK held strong and kept the puck clear of the net.  The rest of the period is fairly uneventful and ends without anything else on the scorecard.

Stats after the first period:

Score:   Colorado Raptors 0  -  Anaheim Outlaws 2
Shots:   Colorado Raptors 3  -  Anaheim Outlaws 15

Second Period

Anaheim came back to begin the second period carrying a lot of momentum and hoped to capitalize on this.  After 7 shots in the first 1:43 of the period Leonid Kofix buries one home at 1:45 to extend their lead to 3.  With a 3-0 lead and the home crowd going wild it looks like the Outlaws are going to run away with things.   There is still a lot of hockey left, but Knox Booth seems to be off of his game tonight.   Goalies are odd ducks and 3 unanswered goals can really shake a guy.  If this continues I wouldn't be surprised to see Low Temp come in and relieve him.

However, less than 1 minute later Colorado's Jake Peralta lays a hit on Gunnar Petrov and makes a quick pass to Lee Samson who begins an odd-man rush.   Just as he passes the Anaheim blue line he fakes a shot at net, makes a clean pass to Patrick Miller who takes a lay-up shot due to Niederreiter over committing to Samson's fake and puts Colorado on the board.  This is then followed by a questionable cross-checking call taken by Anthony Archer to put Colorado on their first Power Play of the night.   Coming off of the goal and now into a Power Play, they are hoping to take back the momentum and close the gap.  Colorado is relentless with the man advantage and Calogero Crudelli finds the back of the net at 4:37 to bring the score to within 1.

The remainder of the period is fairly uneventful other than Noah Tedla taking 2 different cross-checking penalties that Anaheim was able to kill off.   Colorado is clearly in Anaheim's head now and they are making terrible mistakes.   The 3rd period should be some good hockey.

Stats after the second period:

Score:   Colorado Raptors 2  -  Anaheim Outlaws 3
Shots:   Colorado Raptors 13  -  Anaheim Outlaws 21

Third Period

Colorado is coming into the 3rd feeling good about the prior frame and wanting to get ahead in the final period of regulation.   The first 4 minutes were fairly uneventful with a few wide shots from both teams.   Then 4:25 in Ja'Aj Coitus-Wagg wins a face-off in the Colorado zone and quickly skates the puck to the Anaheim zone and fires off a beautiful shot at Patrick Niederreiter who manages a pad block.  Calogero Crudelli grabs the rebound and throws another shot at goal which Niederreiter is able to stop with a diving block with his left foot.     Coitus-Wagg is still putting the pressure on and with Niederreiter out of position is able to bring the puck top shelf and score the tying goal at 4:51.

With the game now tied both teams take varying pushes to try to get one up on the other.   Colorado had a good chance when Noah Tedla took his 3rd penalty for the night with a hooking minor at 6:07, but were unable to capatilize on the Power Play.  The remainder of the period was mostly uneventful and we are bringing the game into overtime.

Stats after the third period:

Score:   Colorado Raptors 3  -  Anaheim Outlaws 3
Shots:   Colorado Raptors 22  -  Anaheim Outlaws 29

Overtime

Since this is Simon's world, we play 4-on-4 OT here.  Both teams bring out their 4-on-4 squads and after 5 minutes of back-and-forth there is nothing new to report.

Shootout

After our 5 minute OT nap, we head into the shootout.   Both teams are escaping with at least one point, but now it's time to see who's going to bring home the W.

First up for the Colorado Raptors is Emeka Valentine-Okoli.   After a bit of fancy footwook, the shot is stopped by Patrick Niederreiter with relative ease
Now for the Anaheim Outlaws we get Kevin Robinson.   Kevin comes in quickly and after a quick deke he's able to take the puck 5-hole on Booth.  Goal!
Next up for the Colorado Raptors is Bo Kane.   Bo puts on a high shot glove side, but it's snagged by Patrick Niederreiter.
Up by 1 shot, Anaheim sends in James Hendricks.   James tries for a bit of razzle dazzle, but is stopped by Knox Booth without much fanfare.
With the game riding on Colorado Raptors winger Vorian Atreides he comes through with a missile that goes wide of the net and leads his team to the locker room.

Powerplays for each team played a key role in the outcome of the game. With Anaheim taking 4 penalties to Colorado's 2, they still overall outperformed Colorado's powerplay scoring 1 goal on 2 attempts with 6 shots hitting the target and 5 shots that missed or were blocked. Colorado had twice as many opportunities as Anaheim and were able to capitalize on one of them, but they were only able to hit the net on 4 shots and they missed the net or had shots blocked 6 times across these 4 powerplays.
Overall Anaheim had 3 shots on goal, 2.5 misses, .5 goals per powerplay and Colorado had 1 shot on goal, 1.5 misses, .25 goals per powerplay.
Anaheim was much more efficient with their opportunities this game.

Missed opportunities were a big factor in this game, and the fact that the last play of the game was a missed shot on the shootout is a great example. Being able to get those shots to hit the net would go a long way to scoring opportunities. Anaheim takes the cake with 24 shots that missed the net. Colorado had less than half of that number, 11. This number doesn't count blocked shots, just misses and deflected off target shots.

It's no surprise that leading the way in this category is Nick Connolly 5 as he also lead this game in shots on goal at 8. He's a shooting machine, but when 1/3 shots that he directs on net miss completely that is an easy to notice area of improvement that he can work on.
He is the first star of the game, and he did pick up 1G, 1A for 2 points and lead Anaheim to the win, but if he is able to reign in his accuracy on target he could potentially be a lights out scorer and the sky is the limit with this guy. He was a highly sought after draft pick in S47, so he might be sitting on the cliff of a goal explosion, so keep watching!

Comment 1: Chicago prospects in Anaheim lead dominate early game
The Chicago Syndicate have a number of prospects currently playing in the SMJHL for the Anaheim Outlaws and all of them were a big part of Anaheim’s win tonight over the Colorado Raptors. S47 draftee Lallo Selman was the early catalyst for the Outlaws and picked up two assists that set the tone early in the first period.  Meanwhile S48 draftee Nick Connolly and S49 draftee Leonid Kofix each contributed a goal as well that brought the Outlaws to a commanding 3-0 lead. While the game would end in a 4-3 win, the early game domination by the Chicago Syndicate prospects was encouraging to see and may be a sign of things to come at the SHL level.

Comment 2: Knox Booth allows Colorado to come back after terrible first period
When you see a goalie giving up 3 goals before the game is even half over you may think that he had an extremely bad game. However that was certainly not the case tonight for Colorado goaltender Knox Booth. In fact, the stats show that Knox Booth actually outplayed his counterpart Patrick Niedderreiter in terms of save percentage (0.906 versus 0.875). The reality is Booth deserves credit for ensuring the game wasn’t too far out of reach and bouncing back. Colorado gave up 15 shots in the first period while only having only 3 themselves towards Niedderreiter. It would have been easy for Booth to call it a night after the first period but instead he remained determined and ensured his team could come back into it and force a shootout. Just an all round stellar job to stay cool by him.

Comment 3: Shootout Recap
While the shootout to end the game was not very long, it certainly had its highlights. The Colorado Raptors elected to shoot first and sent out Emeka Valentine-Okoli. The young forward attempted a slick move with a shot fake and a deke to the backhand but was easily stopped by Patrick Niederreiter. Next up was Anaheim rookie Kevin Robinson who went in on Knox Booth with speed before slowing down and sniping it five-hole! Up next was Bo Kane who was determined to even it up, he elected to wind up and take a slapshot top corner that was gloved down in dramatic fashion by Niederreiter. The 2nd and last Anaheim shooter was James Hendricks who unfortunately lost control of the puck trying to make a deke which resulted in an easy save by Booth. The pressure was then on rookie Vorian Atreides to score. Unfortunately, nerves seemed to get to him and he missed the net with his shot allowing the Outlaws to pick up the win.

3 Stars of the game

3 - Nick Connolly (Anaheim Outlaws)

Connolly is right wing of Outlaws's first line who had 8 shots on goal showing that he can find opportunities for scoring. During this game Raptors goalie Knox Booth was on top of his game and Connolly was only able to score one goal and had secondary assist on Jerry Mander's opening goal. He played for 19:24 and ended game with +-0 despite getting 2 points.

2 - Calogero Crudelli (Colorado Raptors)

Crudelli plays on left wing of raptors's first line and he scored second goal for Raptors when they were down by two early in second period. Later he had primary assist on their third goal to push game to overtime. He was on ice for 21:59 and had highest time on powerplay (4:14) for his team. He finished game with +1 and 2 points.

1 - Jerry Mander (Anaheim Outlaws)

Veteran defenceman Jerry Mander played for 24:11. Scoring games first goal on power play early in first period and also had secondary assist on Outlaws's third goal early in second period. He had 4 shots on goal and blocked one shot, finishing game with +1 and 2 points like other stars as well.

(Losing) Players of the Game

1. Ja'Aj Coitus-Wagg © - The Colorado Raptors played a close game against the Anaheim Outlaws, and the results for (Losing) Player of the Game were just as close. Because of this, I have decided to give the award jointly to two players. The first is Coitus-Wagg who scored a goal in the third period which led the game to a shootout. Coitus-Wagg also attempted five separate shots on goal, the most of anyone on the team. He also managed to block a shot by Nick Connolly and lay a successful hit on Ivan Maximus late in the third period, ten minutes after his game-tying goal. Altogether, he had a good game and deserves the title.

2. Calogero Crudelli (W) – The second (Losing) Player of the Game goes to Calegero Crudelli, who also earned the second star of the game. Calegero assisted on Ja'Aj Coitus-Wagg's game-tying goal and he also scored a goal of his own assisted by Denver Wolfe and Bo Kane in the 2nd period. He had two shots on goal that were blocked in the 2nd and 3rd but also managed to miss the net a total of three times. He also managed to lay a hit on Gordon Bombay halfway through the third period. Although he received second star, I don't think he was as good as Ja'Aj Coitus-Wagg in this game.

PGS - RAPTORS VERSUS OUTLAWS

#1 - Outlaws put on a show - It's always good to see a team compete for the win, and while this game was fairly neck-and-neck, there was a lot of players on the Outlaws who stood out among the rest in order to really provide some much needed firepower in this showdown. Mander, Selman and Connolly all combined for 6 points on the night, two a piece and really proved themselves during this bout. While neither of the trio scored the nail-biting game-winner in the shootout, they did get their team where they needed to be and helped them even make it to a shootout. While the game could've been lost as they collapsed in the third round, this trio really proved their worth.

#2 - Raptors late-game heroics not enough - On the flip-side of the puck, while their first period was god-awful, the rest of the game should've theoretically been theirs to lose. They overcame the 2-0 deficit to tie the game and then once again had to tie it late in the third. With all the momentum on their side, you would think they would be able to man up, push forward and get things done, however it was Anaheim who pumped their breaks and got shit done, so Colorado couldn't. However it isn't without some upside, as on only three goals, eight players had a point in the night, meaning the puck-movement was on-point, the plays drawn up were working, and everyone seemed to be in a groove.

#3 - Goalies put on a show - Anytime a game is this close, you have to give props to the goalies where props are due. And in this case, the goalies on both side were phenomenal. They faced a lot of shots, combined they were 50/56 which is insane, but even separate they were lights out. Looking at Anaheim to begin, the eventual game-winning goalie stopped 21 shots, also stopping three crucial ones during the shootout which was key for the team, this makes him look great because he actually faced less shots than his opponent over in Colorado. On the flip side, looking at our goalie, his stat line is insane, 29 saves, faced more shots, great percentages, overall just nothing bad to say here just some unfortunate luck that he let one in. Thankfully he did save another giving his team a slight chance to rebound but he was left hanging on that part.

Swegs MVP

I'm actually going to agree with the people assigning the 3 stars of the game today, because 1st star Jerry Mander actually had a really good game for the Anaheim Outlaws. 2 points in the form of 2 assists, 4 shots on goal, 2 hits AND 1 blocked shot. Even won 50% of his 2 faceoffs taken. Sported a 21:43 icetime with an amazing 4:24 on the PK. I'm a sucker for PK time so thats a big one. He played almost half a minute more PK than anyone out there. Respect. He also played almost 2 minutes of PP. Good game bud!

Swegs post game Interview

Hey, Sweg back in here getting the freshest interviews straight from the ice. Tonight we're talking with the MVP Jerry Mander.

Hello Jerry. A shootout win for your side tonight and a first star for you. How are you feeling?

Feeling great, as you said i had a solid night, anyone couldve taken home the 1st star though i though a lot of guys had a good night. I'm a little disappointed we couldn't get it done without giving them a point but i'm not picky.

Understandable, I don't agree that anyone couldve gotten the 1st star tonight, cause you really did have a great game, I agree that the point they got can be important in the seeding in the playoffs. Next game is against Whalers, thoughts?

We'll win in regulation this time.

Haha good to hear, thank you.

Swegs sweggy Trivia

This was the third game of the season between the two teams and we're only on gameday 12, I know i raised my eyebrows at that, having 3 games between the teams that early could cause for some people being upset, imagine having one team full of vets and one full of rookies, having that many games against the same team in the beginning really gives the team with more vets a huge advantage and a great chance to get a buffer of points going into the seeding for the playoffs. Anaheim has won all 3, with this one being the only one where Colorado got a point. Both teams seem to be around the same when it comes to rookies though so i hope this scheduling it didn't do too much.

Misplay of the Game
At the beginning of the second period, shortly after Patrick Miller's goal to cut the Outlaw lead to just 2 (3-1), Anthony Archer takes a bad cross-checking penalty to give the Raptors an amazing chance to ride the momentum from the goal and try to tie up the game. However, the Raptors ALMOST squandered their man advantage away by deciding to ice the puck 3 times in the span of their powerplay. Luckily, Bo Kane won 2 of the 3 ensuing faceoffs to help maintain control of the puck even after his team's blunder which eventually led to Calogero Crudelli potting one near the very end of the PP to cut the Outlaw lead to just 1 at 3-2. Unfortunately, we at home cannot find a positive with the Raptors' powerplay strategy even though they scored as they receive tonight's misplay of the game. It's not often that we get a team meltdown for our misplay, but this one is unacceptable and luckily Bo Kane was able to carry his team through their mistakes.
