St. Louis Scarecrows Mid-Season Review

Overview
We're nearly halfway through the S49 regular season, so I wanted to take a moment to break down how the Scarecrows have done in their first 24 games of the season. The Crows currently sit in 5th place in the league standings with a record of 11-10-3 (25 points). They've spent much of the season smack dab in the middle of the standings pack, unable to break into the top echelon of teams and fly high with the Falcons but also not sinking to the bottom of the sea with the Whalers. The home and away splits for St. Louis are fairly equal, with a 5-4-3 record at home and a 6-6-0 record on the road. Pair that with a -5 goal differential, and you have a team that is hanging right around the .500 mark with potential to move in either direction depending on who can get hot and who goes cold. This team has already proven that it's capable of putting together a streak in either direction as well, with a 4 game win streak and two 3 game losing streaks under their belt already this season.

Team Stats
The Scarecrows have been scoring an average of 2.96 goals per game, which is in the top half of the league but nothing to write home about. The goals against average is slightly worse than that (3.17) and in the bottom half of the league. Oddly enough, despite this sub 1.0 goals for per goal against average (.93 goals for per 1 goal against), only 3 teams actually have a better ratio. Of the 10 teams in the league, only 3 actually have a positive goal differential. The St. Louis power play has been a bit of a let down up to this point in the year, only converting at a rate of 16.25 percent. Thta puts them in the bottom third of the league. The penalty kill hasn't been much better, killing off only 79.61% of opposing chances. Combining the two together, the Scarecrows come out with a 95.86% special teams conversion rate, which is again in the bottom third of the league. The Crows are averaging 26.50 shots for and also 26.50 shots against each game, which is right around the league average. One of the big concerns for the Crows this season has been their lack of discipline on the ice. They average more penalty minutes per game (10.50) than any other team in the league. This may have something to do with the sheer physical nature of the team, as they average the third most hits per game with 16.79. The team has also blocked the third most shots in the league, averaging 8.16 per game. The face-off percentage has been slightly above average this season, with the team winning 50.87% of all draws.

Player Stats
The Scarecrow roster is full of many outstanding players and numerous future hall of famers. Here is how each player has done through the mid-way point of the season. Note: Asterisk by name represents rookie status.

Mika Kandinsky - C @Mika_Kandinsky
24 GP | 12 G | 16 A | 28 P | +20 | 20 PIM | 25 H | 6 SB
Kandinsky is off to a great start this season, leading the team in points and only 1 point behind the league leader. His 12 goals puts him in a 6-way tie for 3rd in goals leage-wide. His points per minute of 1.16 is the 5th best in the league, and his plus/minus rating is second to none. Mika is one of only 6 players to have scored a short handed goal on the season. He's also proven to be a clutch scorer when the team has needed it most, scoring 2 game tying goals. He has not been afraid to get his hands dirty either, registering two fights on the season as well. Both of these fights came in the same game against Raphael D'Alcott. Kandinsky finished second in the league last season in points, coming behind his teammate and linemate Nicolaj Muller. It should be interesting to see if he can keep up his current pace and potentially take over the league lead in that category.

Nicolaj Muller - LW @esilverm
24 GP | 12 G | 15 A | 27 P | +19 | 23 PIM | 23 H | 8 SB
The reigning MVP has gotten off to another excellent start on the season and currently sits second on the team in point totals. He is also second in the league amongst all wingers. Muller finds himself in a 6-way tie for the 3rd most goals scored in the league, along with Kandinsky. He is expecting to take this total over by himself with the number of shots he's registering, because his 87 is more than any other player in the league. Muller is also clearly scoring points at a high rate, with 1.12 per 20 minutes (6th in the league). As you might have expected, his plus/minus is also up there at 2nd in the league with a +19 rating. Muller has been clutch as well, as he has managed to score 2 game tying goals to match Mika's total on the season. Will Muller make a push in the second half for back-to-back MVP seasons? He's certainly shown he's capable of it.

Barrett Blackwood - RW @MrStennett
24 GP | 11 G | 14 A | 25 P | +18 | 8 PIM | 23 H | 6 SB
Blackwood has had the pleasure of joining Kandisnky and Muller on the first line this season, and he has proven to be the perfect fit on the line. Blackwood has registered more points than any other right winger in the league this season. His point per 20 minutes (1.23) is the third highest rate in the league, so you know he's making the most of every minute he has on the ice. He's been generating a lot of offense, as evidenced by his 75 shots on goal this season (good for 8th in the league). This first line for the Scarecrows has been untouchable, and Blackwood shows this with the 3rd highest plus/minus in the league with a +18. Blackwood had large shoes to fill this season after being bumped from the 2nd line to fill the 1st line void, and he's done nothing but impress in the first half of the season.

Basil Magnicotta - D @Rancidbudgie
24 GP | 4 G | 14 A | 18 P | +4 | 13 PIM | 18 H | 23 SB
Magnicotta's development in the SMJHL has stalled out, but yet he finds himself producing like a future star every night when he takes the ice. His 18 points puts him in 7th among all defenders for scoring, and he leads all defenders on the Scarecrows roster in that department. His contributions on the offensive end of the ice provide a much needed boost to the team's scoring from the blue line, and he still manages to hold his own on the defensive end. Magnicotta will need to continue being an anchor for this team as the season progresses if they hope to make a run in the playoffs.

Lyle Odelein III - D @Huck24
24 GP | 1 G | 13 A | 14 P | +5 | 10 PIM | 14 H | 34 SB
Odelein has made a name for himself this year with his unselfish and team-centric play. He has set up his teammates 13 times for goals while only scoring 1 himself. He also has blocked the 7th most shots in the league with 34, which is more than anybody else on the Crows roster. Odelein has been a leader for the Scarecrows defensive for multiple seasons now, and it's easy to see why. His team-first style of play will go a long ways in propelling the Scarecrows to the top in the second half of the season.

Noah Brusky - D @BrewskyBoy
24 GP | 3 G | 10 A | 13 P | +4 | 42 PIM | 46 H | 30 SB
Brusky has found himself playing with an increased role this season, moving from the third pairing up to the first pairing over the off-season. Apparently these increased minutes were a bit too much for him, as he's decided to spend more minutes in the box than anybody else on the team (and 2nd most in the league). Despite his time in the box however, he's still managed to be a force on the ice with the most hits on the team (46). If Brusky can clean up his penalty minutes and take a more disciplined approach to the game, it would really go a long with with helping the Scarecrows get back to their cup-contending form.

Yamamoto Mitsuharu* - LW @TML99
24 GP | 4 G | 7 A | 11 P | -6 | 8 PIM | 41 H | 5 SB
Mitsuharu joined the Scarecrows roster during the draft this past off-season. The Scarecrows lord and savior has re-created to join the team, and thus was picked with their first second round draft pick. Since joining the team, Mitsuharu has been a nice source of secondary scoring with his role on the second line. He's 5th among all rookies in points scored, and leads all rookies on the St. Louis roster. As he continues to develop over the course of the season, Mitsuharu is sure to be a strong contributor on the offensive end for not just this season, but for many seasons to come.

Jakub Bruchevski - C @JaytheGreat
24 GP | 4 G | 6 A | 10 P | -6 | 16 PIM | 25 H | 1 SB
Bruchevski is in his second year with St. Louis after joining the team as a free agent in S48. He's seen an increased role this season and centers the second line now with two rookie wingers on his sides. He's done an excellent job taking the young guns under his wings and getting them acquainted with the speed of play in the SMJHL. Bruchevski has the 10th best face-off percentage in the league, winning 54.20% of his draws, so he's certainly doing his part in gaining posessions and giving the team plenty of opportunities. He's also been the only skater on the team to score a goal during a shootout. Bruchevski has been developing at a solid and steady rate over his tenure, and as his linemates continue to develop with him, we could really be in store for an increase in production from the Crows second line.

Richard Hurtz* - RW @dicfor
24 GP | 5 G | 3 A | 8 P | -2 | 4 PIM | 11 H | 1 SB
Hurtz has been a real surprise so far for the Scarecrows this season. Drafted with the final pick in the 7th round, there weren't many high hopes for the rookie coming into the league. He's been playing limited minutes on the 4th line and hasn't been showing any real signs of development, but he has managed to score 5 goals on 20% shooting (5th best in the league) and tally 3 assists on the side. If Hurtz can get back around to putting time on the practice rink, he could end up being a steal for the Scarecrows. Either way, his production in the first half of the season was more than anybody could have predicted for an entire season.

Mattie Brunton - D @brunners
24 GP | 1 G | 7 A | 8 P | -4 | 4 PIM | 14 H | 24 SB
Brunton hasn't been able to break through in the SMJHL as a star, but he's played consistent minutes on the 2nd and 3rd pairings over the past few seasons. This season has been much of the same. He's contributed a little bit onthe offensive side without being a liability on the defensive end. The Scarecrows will be looking for Brunton to remain a shoulder for his rookie D partner to lean on in the second half of the season.

James Ronlain* - RW @Rankle
24 GP | 4 G | 2 A | 6 P | -5 | 22 PIM | 20 H | 1 SB
Ronlain was the first round selection (8th overall) for the Scarecrows in this season's Reddit draft. After a strong pre-season performance, Ronlain has struggled a bit trying to hit his stride in the SMJHL and has found himself in a bit of penalty troubles, but this is to be expected for a rookie that was thrust into 2nd line minutes with a 2nd year center and another rookie winger. Ronlain has been showing great development early in his career and will undoubtedly be a star for the Scarecrows in the near future.

Flash Gordon* - D @twerkin4jesus
24 GP | 2 G | 4 A | 6 P | -8 | 24 PIM | 38 H | 28 SB
Flash Gordon, savior of the universe, signed with the Scarecrows shortly after the draft. Flash has quickly developed since joining the team and has proven to be an excellent signing in the early stages of their career with a strong physical presence. The penalty minutes will need to be cleaned up going into the second half of the season, but it's clear that Flash is here to stay as a core piece of the Scarecrows defensive unit and will save every one of us.

Blake Phoenix* - C @Blazewing
24 GP | 1 G | 4 A | 5 P | -2 | 11 PIM | 13 H | 2 SB
Phoenix was an 8th round selection for the Scarecrows in the Reddit draft. Playing on the 4th line with limited minutes, the 5 points that he's managed to tally has been a pleasant surprise so far this season. Phoenix has made some waves in his short time in the league as shortly after the SMJHL draft, he declared that he would not be participating in the SHL draft during the next off-season. He has shown no signs of development since his announcement.

Nikitnory McCrosbov* - LW @Paintball6786
24 GP | 3 G | 1 A | 4 P | -2 | 8 PIM | 11 H | 1 SB
McCrosbov was another late round selection by the Scarecrows, being picked up in the 6th round of the Reddit draft. While he showed some strong signs of development early on, he has stalled out as of late. The Scarecrows are still holding out hope that their 4th line winger will continue to develop as time goes on, and they'll certainly take his 4 points of production at this point of the season.

Aron Hernadivic* - LW @"jfisherr"
24 GP | 1 G | 2 A | 3 P | -8 | 6 PIM | 15 H | 2 SB
Hernadivic was the second pick for the Scarecrows in the 2nd round of the Reddit draft. Hernadivic has been playing on the 3rd line with two other rookies. While it's been some tough sledding to start out as far as stats go, Hernadivic still has a bright future ahead of him as he's been showing great strides in his development. As he and the rest of his linemates continue to put their time in off the ice to improve themselves, we should continue to see Hernadivic and his entire line produce more and more.

Tucker Centennial* - D @maymay5280
24 GP | 0 G | 3 A | 3 P | -6 | 22 PIM | 23 H | 20 SB
Tucker was the last pick for the Scarecrows in this past Reddit draft, selected at the end of the 9th round. While he's provided some sparks at times and seemed excited to have been drafted at the time, his heart just hasn't been entirely in it and he hasn't shown any signs of development in weeks. Centennial has had some penalty troubles early on, but this is to be expected from the physical style of play that he brings to the table on the defensive end.

Colton Strudwick* - C @SeeJay
24 GP | 1 G | 1 A | 2 P | -8 | 5 PIM | 13 H | 3 SB
Strudwick was drafted with the 30th overall pick in this past Reddit draft, and is also spending his time on the third line with fellow rookies. Strudwick has been consistently developing his game since becoming a member of the Scarecrows, and has shown he has what it gakes to make it in this league. His face-off percentage is actually the best in the entire league, which is astounding for a rookie to come in and achieve. The Scarecrows are looking for Strudwick to continue his development and keep up his great work in the face-off circle in the second half of the season.

Sasha Dangelchek* - RW @acdangel
24 GP | 1 G | 0 A | 1 P | -8 | 6 PIM | 30 H | 1 SB
Dengelchek was the second pick for the Scarecrows in the fourth round of the draft, picked at 39th overall. He has just the one goal on the season, but hey, we all gotta start somewhere! Dangelchek has been playing on the third line with rookie linemates Strudwick and Hernandivic, and like his linemates he has made some nice strides in development. He's also been a very physical player without taking the penalties that you'd usually see with someone that likes to hit as much as Sasha does. This line for the Scarecrows will be something to watch in the future as the three of them continue to develop together into future stars for St. Louis.

Shiqa Vitalievich* - G @NylarthePhoenix
16 GP | 8 W | 4 L | 1 OTL | .897 S% | 2.63 GAA | 0 SO
Vitalievich was drafted in the fourth round by the Scarecrows, with pick number 36. The Scarecrows were in need of another goalie after the departure of their starter the previous year, and Shiqa is already showing that he has what it takes to carry the torch in net. Shiqa has the 5th best save percentage in the league at .897 and the 2nd best goals against average at 2.63. The Scarecrows will be looking for Shiqa to continue his excellence in net in the second half of the season as he continues developing into a potential future #1 goaltender in the league.

Marques Brownlee - G @Really
12 GP | 3 W | 6 L | 2 OTL | .869 S% | 3.54 GAA | 0 SO
Brownlee was acquired mid-season last year by the Scarecrows and immediately took over the back-up role on the team. This season he has split time evenly between rookie Shiqa Vitalievich. He has not had as much success as his counterpart so far this season, but the Scarecrows are expected to rely heavily on Brownlee still as the season progresses to keep both goalies fresh and ready for anything.
