Taking a look at the Colorado Raptors: A brief mid-season report

Raptors  Raptors  Raptors

Although most people seem to agree that the Raptors would be bottom feeders this season, they have been a pleasant surprise in the eyes of many, not least of all the fans. They have been floating around the middle of the pack for most of the season so far but after recently suffering a 6 game losing streak they currently sit in 8th place with a record of 12-12-5. Not great. Not terrible. It is worth noting that only 3 points separate the Lethbridge Lions (14-13-2), who are currently in 5th place, and the Anchorage Armada (13-15-1), who are currently in 10th place. Its a tight race and cobbling together a couple of wins in a row will quickly rocket any team to the top 5. With that in mind, lets have a look at the underlying statistics before moving on to our player stats rundown.

Team Stats

The stats behind the Rapors are quite interesting and could probably best be described as bipolar. They have constantly been one of the best team in limiting shots against (25.17), goals against (3.03) and blocked shots per game (8.10) this season, so defensively they have been a contender. However, while they were great in their own zone for the most part they have been one of the worst teams when it comes to shots for (23.59) and goals for (2.86). Interestingly, if we delve deeper we can also see a similar trend when we look at the teams face-off record for the season. In the defensive zone the raptors have a league leading 54.70FO% and they are tied for first in the neutral zone with 53.25FO% but drop all the way down to 7th in the offensive zone with 49.49FO%.  This still positions them as the best team in the league when it comes to face-offs with a combined 52.41FO%, something that definitely has played a big part in their success so far this season.

Before we get too carried away we have some more negatives to look at before we continue. First up is special teams, something that has been getting better in their most recent games but overall has been a huge weakness for the team so far. The Raptors have constantly found themselves at the bottom of the league in both PK and PP, currently sitting in 5th with 18.92% and 8th with 78.85% respectively with a combined special teams conversion rate of 97.77% with places them in 8th place in the league. Although the team doesn't have a very physical playstyle (currently last in the league in hits with an average of 15.28 hits per game) they have an above average number of penalty minutes per game (currently 9.14 vs the league average of 8.85). This will inevitably lead to more losses in close games where a powerplay goal or a successful penalty kill would have made the difference. This is definitely something that the team will be working on improving in the second half of the season and moving into the playoffs. An interesting side note to this is that they are tied for 1st place in shorthanded goals with 3 so far.

Player Statistics

Now lets have a look at the players themselves. The players will be in order of the total amount of fantasy points acquired so far in the season. Please note that players who have played an average of 9 minutes or less per game will not be included and only the top 5 will have written describtions in this report to keep it brief.

Calogero Crudelli - LW - 163.9 Fantasy Points, 5.50 P/20
29GP | 13G | 22A | 97SHT | 21HIT | 7SB

Crudelli has had an explosive season so far, leading the league in points. His offensive stats are exceptional and although most of his 35 points comes from assists he has a whopping 13.40SHT%, proving he is more than capable of scoring important goals when they count the most, do doubt a cornerstone of the team. Notably he has only spent 2 minutes in the sin bin this season, again proving how reliable he is. For most of the season he has shared the first line with Ja'Aj Coitus-Wagg and Emeka Valentine-Okoli.

Derek Bohne Jr. - D - 159.5 Fantasy Points, 5,07 P/20
29GP | 3G | 20A | 41SHT | 56HIT | 44SB

The undisputed leader of the successful Colorado blueline, Bohne has had a very impressive season defensively so far. He leads by example with his strong, physical play that really adds an x-factor to his game and never fails to pump up his teammates. That style of play comes at a price however as it has also resulted in a massive 53 penalty minutes in the season so far, highest on the team by quite a margin.

Bo Kane - C - 137.7 Fantasy Points, 4.76 P/20
29GP | 14G | 12A | 71SHT | 28HIT | 11SB

Kane has spent most of the season on the second line with rookies Atreides and Lekberg-Osterman and you may think that this would have effected his production. You'd be wrong. Kane is the Raptors leading goal scorer and is currently the 12th highest scorer in the league, absolutely lighting it up with a monstrous 19.72SHT%. He was recently rewarded by being moved up to the first line.

Denver Wolfe - D - 134.7 Fantasy Points, 4.06 P/20
29GP | 5G | 18A | 49SHT | 28HIT | 29SB

Wolfe is the Raptors leading defenseman in scoring, with an impressive 23 points in 29 games. The smooth skating, offensive d-man has been fantastic so far this season, playing the role of the playmaking quarterback in 5v5 as well as on the PP. Wolfe has been particularly good on the powerplay where he has racked up 9 points so far.

Ja'Aj Coitus-Wagg - C - 112.3 Fantasy Points, 3.84 P/20
29GP | 8G | 12A | 65SHT | 56HIT | 2SB

Coitus-Wagg finishes out our top 5 players for this report. He spent most of the season on the first line but was recently moved down to the second when Kane was promoted. He plays a strong physical game, which really shows on the penalty minutes (29) and hits but don't let that distract you from his scoring ability. He will be looking to add to his impressive play from the second line, at least for the moment.

Emeka Valentine-Okoli - RW - 100.9 Fantasy Points, 3.91 P/20
29GP | 10G | 6A | 71SHT | 27HIT | 8SB

Heat Siecker - D - 95.6 Fantasy Point, 3.35 P/20
29GP | 3G | 8A | 20SHT | 27HIT | 35SB

I was hoping you’d say that. I guess I should be leading the league while on the 4th line eh?

If you had a better build you wouldn't be on the 4th line

That’s an interesting theory, which doesn’t take into account the 11 players we have at the 350 cap.

I'll come back to this next season when you're still flopping.
