Code:
The S51 Challenge Cup finals will be New Orleans vs. Hamilton
Against - While I think the Specters will make the Challenge Cup final, I think it's finally the Buffalo Stampede's time to represent the Eastern Conference this season. The standings are too much of a toss-up in the East, and really, anything can happen - but I think the Stampede are poised to finally make noise in the playoffs after seasons of repeated heartbreak. Watch for Cedric Robinson, especially...
Code:
The S51 Four Star Cup finals will be Carolina vs. Anchorage
Against - No, no, and re-no. How often in the past 10 seasons, have we seen seeds 1 and 2 make it to the Four Star Cup Final in the SMJHL? If I recall correctly, a big fat zero. The league is too volatile, the players can lose confidence in the blink of an eye - and frankly? I think the 9 other teams have had enough of Carolina. They'll do their absolute most to prevent the three-peat, and I can see their season ending in the semis.

I PUT THIS ONE IN EVERY SEASON BUT IT'S FINALLY NOT A JOKE - CAMERON CARTER II WILL WIN THE DAR AWARD
For..? - Hell, it's his year. Why has the awards committee snubbed such a graceful, bombastic player for years on end? It's time to give CC2 his dues... NAH, SHIT, I CAN'T KEEP A STRAIGHT FACE, HE AIN'T GETTING THE DAR
Code:
Nicholas Williams is the rightful MVP of S51
Against - MVP, to me, means the undisputed locomotive of a team. Yes, Williams is the points leader on a very frightening Specters team, but he has DeMaricus Smyth and Piotr Czerkawski following close behind, and that line is firing on all cylinders. However, Tony Pepperoni is currently leading the Blizzard with
17 more points than the closest forward - kind of like Loktionov on the North Stars, but on crack. He seems alone up-front at times, and Edmonton is none the worse for wear. If we're going to talk about an undisputed MVP, there he is.
Code:
The two best teams in the league are both from the Western Conference
For - I don't think there's any disputing this. As I said previously, the Eastern Conference is a battlefield, and that's because of the relative evenness of the powers at hand, where even the teams out of the playoffs have a chance at beating the top teams on a nightly basis. But with 25 losses
combined, the Blizzard and Specters have united for as many or less losses than 6 other teams in the league have
on their own this season. This stat alone should make it clear. Edmonton and New Orleans are on a totally different level than the rest of the league.
Code:
Daniel Bischoff will win the SMJHL MVP award
For - It's tough to argue against my Swiss teammate. While he's not leading any category, he's still racking up points at a torrid pace, while playing on the second line, and not even at his natural position. His line with van der Heijden (shooting with an abnormally high percentage) and Hanson (not contributing nearly as much as the other two) has been a treat to watch, and horrible to play against. I can't wait until he's my teammate in Minnesota... Because until then, he may be what Anchorage needed to hoist a Four Star Cup, and that pains me to say.
Code:
Sour skittles are better than regular skittles
For - Who's the bland heathen that prefers soulless candy to vivifying bundles of joy? Sour Skittles will always and forever be the most delicious alternative to the boring old regular Skittles, and anyone who disagrees needs to be waved off with a stern "OK, boomer."
Code:
The West Kendall Platoon are having the luckiest season in recent memory
Against - Are we already forgetting Mika Kandinsky's human torch-like abilities not even a season ago? How Toronto, against all odds, snuck into a playoff berth - and actually won a series? I'm not saying that West Kendall isn't having a surprising season, but you can't pretend Beaujeaux Biscuits is a horrible goalie, or that they're all shooting way above average. They're simply scoring by committee, when one line is having an off-night, the other picks up the slack, and they have a goalie that can steal games. That should be good enough for the final spot in the East.
Code:
San Francisco and New England are currently first and second in the league in powerplay % yet are the two most disappointing teams this season - this proves that having a good powerplay is actually...... BAD
Against - Followed closely by Edmonton, New Orleans, Chicago and Hamilton... Yes, please tell me more about your crazy theory that dictates scoring goals is actually harmful to a team's season. If anything, it's more testament to San Francisco and New England's shit defending than to the powerplay's uselessness.
Code:
Two Tucks will win individual awards for the Blizzard this season
For - In my humble, uninformed, SMJHL goalie opinion, I can see the Edmonton squad having quite the night during the presentation of the S51 SHL Awards. I sincerely think Tony Pepperoni, Tor Tuck and Tommy Tuck will run away with many awards, including MVP.
Code:
Three recent retirees - Dani Forsberg, Tigole Bitties, and Teddy Cuddles - will all make the Hall of Fame
Uhhhh... - Being a relatively new face to the SHL, I'll be honest - I have no idea who those players are. But they seem to be big names (same goes for Jason Visser, another one that had people sobbing at his retirement), so... I think so? Maybe? I'm gonna need to spend a LOT of time looking at old indexes before I can formulate a real answer.
