Hi everyone! I'm jfisherr, captain of the Crows and I'll be back co-hosting this year's S51 SMJHL Awards Show with fellow SHL member @DaftRaincloud. Sorry @cpetrella , we back.

With everybody a little touchy last offseason, this year will be more factual, less cringe-worthy inducing jokes, as we'll aim to celebrate those deemed worthy enough to win awards. Hopefully this one is received similar to the first and we can all celebrate and get along as friends.

Feel free to keep on reading for a refresher on how S51 of the SMJHL went! Hope you enjoy!

TEAM AWARDS

Quote:Four Star Cup Champions: Anchorage Armada Armada

Oriens Trophy – Eastern Champs: Kelowna Knights Knights

Occasus Trophy – Western Champs: Anchorage Armada Armada

Congratulations to both teams for making it as far as they did, going all the way to Game 7 of the Four Star Cup finals. Carolina, the heavy favorite heading into the playoffs as the number 1 overall seed, who were coming off of back to back Four Star Cup championships, were upset in the second round in 6 games to the 8th seeded Whalers. This, coupled with 3rd seeded Halifax, as well as 4th seeded Lethbridge being upset in 5 and 6 games to St. Louis and Kelowna respectively, left the 2-seeded Armada as the favorite for the remainder of the playoffs, and they managed to pull through. Congratulations Anchorage!

Quote:Laurifer Trophy – Best Regular Season Record: Carolina Kraken - 73 points Kraken

The season before this saw the Colorado Raptors take home the Laurifer Trophy with 62 points, showing Carolina Kraken's season was much more dominant compared to last season. In fact, this is the most dominant regular season a team has had in recent memory, as the Detroit Falcons in S44 were the last team to break 70 points, as they had exactly 70. (Note, these Falcons also lost in the second round, as they lost to the 5th seeded Colorado Raptors - Scottey Crawfling shoutout) For those that have not heard of Scottey Crawfling, in this series, Detroit outshot Colorado 204-132. That is not a typo, they outshot them by almost 10 shots a game. It appears as though breaking 70 points is somewhat of a curse, but still, congrats to Carolina for one helluva regular season.

INDIVIDUAL AWARDS

Quote:Jared Hanson (Scoring Champ): @dylanjj37 Daniel Bischoff (62 points) Armada
  1. Daniel Bischoff (ANC) - 62 points
  2. Khabib Nurmagomedov (DET) - 57 points
  3. Bobby Bobcalf (VAN) - 54 points
With a few goalies reaching the 425 TPE cap, and a few more at the 350 cap, it seems scoring was down across the league, as after Fouquette led last season in scoring with 72 points, and three Scarecrows each break the 60 point mark, this season saw Bischoff lead the league in scoring with 62 points. Congrats on a great season!

Quote:Roberto Martucci (Goal Leader): @khabib Khabib Nurmagomedov (DET) - 31 goals Falcons
  1. Khabib Nurmagomedov (DET) - 31 goals
  2. James Ronlain (STL) - 26 goals (tie)
  3. Bobby Lane (CAR) - 26 goals (tie)
Congrats Khabib! You may have a career after UFC after all.

Quote:Ronan O’Keefe (Playoff Scoring Champ): @NJBadApple Luciano Vessot (KEL) - 24 points Knights
  1. Luciano Vessot (KEL) - 24 points
  2. Daniel Bischoff (ANC) - 23 points
  3. Andrei Petrikov (ANC) - 22 points (tie)
  4. Augustus Wang (ANC) - 22 points (tie)
In a bit of a shocker, the Knights #1 defenceman Luciano Vessot edges out the fleet of Anchorage players to be the league's leading playoff scorer. With Wang making the top 3 as well, two of the league's leading playoff point getters were in fact defenceman.

Quote:Mathias Chouinard Award - Top GM Duo

Quote:Tom Corcoran Trophy - Best Goalie
  • @toirekari Ian Venables (ANC)

  • @Jearim White Goodman (VAN)

Quote:Zach Miller Trophy - Most Dedicated Player

Yeahthat
Okay this post started out me proving why I should be ROTY as a joke but then I started diving in to statistics and I just really want you guys to think differently about nominees man, follow along until the end, I know I talk about myself a lot but it's important I promise.

1.) I was tied for rookie points in the playoffs. And just to make it clear I was the best rookie in the loffs. Theo Golury who was tied with me in points played 8 more games than I did. And Rhys Pritchard played like a minute and a half more per game than I did. I went ahead and figured out the rookie points per minute just so I know where I was at.

Mega Tron 0.045
Golury 0.025
Pritchard 0.035
Vyskoc 0.018
Marston 0.031
Bergstrom 0.019
Schmackers 0.018
Carragher 0.030
Labovitch 0.038
Veinbergs 0.020

That's right bitches I am numero uno by like .01 points which is significant

2.) I am also 2nd in points per minuto in the regular season as well. Only Labovitch is ahead and Pritchard and I are tied basically I didn't really pay attention to who had the numbers after the 0.033 but here are those numbers.

Mega Tron 0.033
Golury 0.024
Pritchard 0.033
Vyskoc 0.027
Marston 0.030
Bergstrom 0.021
Schmackers 0.021
Labovitch 0.037
McMaster 0.028
Cvitkovich 0.027

3.) Okay after doing these fancy stats a little bit I was thinking why are the nominees just the top 3 scorers? It should be more than just scoring so I started digging some more. I noticed Bergstrom and Schmackers were the only defensemen in the top 10 in points in playoffs or post season. So I decided to look at hits and blocks

Mega Tron H 15 SB 5
Pritchard H 25 SB 4
Marston H 17 SB 8
Bergstrom H 43 SB 53
Labovitch H 26 SB 10
McMaster H 60 SB 5
Vyskoc H 49 SB 9
Cvitkovich H 41 SB 2
Golury H 46 SB 5
Schmackers H 18 SB 43

So then I got thinking about goalies so I started looking at statistics for goalies who played over 10 games this season

Chamberlain GP 32 W 11 SV% 0.872 GAA 3.34
Potvinov GP 11 W 2 SV% 0.839 GAA 4.77
Beibitzhanov GP 44 W 20 SV% 0.889 GAA 2.65
Burov GP 24 W 5 SV% 0.873 GAA 3.53
Saarinen GP 11 W 3 SV% 0.921 GAA 2.28

Check out Beibitzhanov's numbers. Those are great numbers compared to everyone else sorry pb your sample is just so small.

So as not to drag on I will come to my conclusion now. I could go on and on about different statistics but I truly do believe there is no reason the nominees should just be the top 3 scorers, I think it should be Pritchard, Labovitch, and Beib (I cannot type that name again). Thank you coming to my ted talk please stop nominating just for offense.
Hopefully you have a big enough scoring gap to prevent having to pass the awards presentation to the master PBP maker himself, @DaftRaincloud.
lets get some BOAT DOMINATION

Thanks for your message! I can share Beibitzhanov appeared on 5/9 ballots, but fell short compared to the vote totals that these three finalists got! I have to acknowledge I tried to temper my own love and interest for my COL players. He certainly appeared on my ballot, but I try to temper (and sometimes over adjust) to not show favoritism. It's an inexact science, which I know you know.

Also, I didn't submit finalists to jfisherr to post, but I looked back and his general top 3 are solid enough options for finalists--there's no one I feel, looking at the vote totals, was egregiously left out based on how the votes landed. There are a few awards where, if I'd marked the finalists, there'd probably be another person listed as a finalist, but overall jfisher's instincts were good.

To your critique, as Awards Head, I agree the top three point earners shouldn't be the finalists for the award every year. We did go deeper using @aaronwilson's advanced stats to help with many of our conversations. When I look at the RotY ballots, several other players received some votes for this award outside these three finalists. Those options all appeared 2nd or 3rd on a person's ballot. The three finalists all got at least one first place vote from a committee member, and pretty much every ballot for this award looks a little different.

Also, playoff performances are not included in any award but the playoffs MVP. I think you know that, but I appreciate your research all the same.

Cool good to know
I'm honored to be thought of for the Ron Bolt. Even if I don't win, that's pretty cool.
Weird to consider the best player in the league underrated, but i gladly accept the nomination. May my opponents lose hard because im the best.

Also, real talk, Joseph Weston deserves this more than I. Dude was doing just as well as me with fewer minutes. Absolutely kill't it
Carolina sweeps because the rock said so!
Thank you for the nominations Smile good luck to everyone on the board!
Honored to be nominated for MVP! Good luck to everyone!
Award show is live at 5 EST!
