In the first game of the season, Vancouver Whalers winger Luffy Richard has his first goal. It has been a long road to get to this point for Richard, but with the Whalers off to a hot start, he plans on this goal to be the first of many. The many days of training have paid off. All those mornings he got out of bed, all the naps in the afternoon, and all the meals he didn't skip have led to this. He knows everyone back has eagerly waited for their little town, Anaheim CA, to finally be put on the map. Luffy believes he is the person to do that.
As he sits on his couch moisturizing, the ice dries out his skin something fierce, he looks forward to the days he can reminisce about his first goal, much as he is doing now. He is also looking forward to the next games in which he is sure the Whalers will be able to maintain their meteoric momentum.
"All this staying inside has done wonders for my stick work," Luffy muses.
I know what he means. This intrepid reporter, a true warrior of the keys, watching Richard shoot every single piece of his dirty laundry into the washing machine. The Vancouver staff love him, claim he is the hardest working towel jockey they've ever not paid.
"Stick work is important. You use the stick to score. If you don't use your stick you, you can't score," he explains to me as a wise monk instructs their pupil. Frankly, being stuck in isolation may be slowly driving me insane because I, the mouthpiece of the best Luffy on the Whalers, am starting to feel like he makes sense.
If a man of such singular dedication can maintain his focus as the world goes insane and toilet paper is worth its weight in gold, then I too must maintain my focus. How else will the world hear about the important aphorisms of Luffy Richard?
"The stick. You start with the stick and it ends with a goal," he says sagely.
Yes, dear readers, this is the way.
