Gabriel DuJardin left the NWJHL without a championship after his Firebirds were eliminated from the playoffs by the Whalers in a tough game seven loss. While his SHL parent team had advanced to round 2 after beating the Steelhawks, DuJardin had an opportunity to watch the team from the stands.
"It was a great learning experience. I got to practice with the team and watch the games. It was kind of frustrating not playing, but I knew I would have to work hard to play in a game."
After the Wolfpack went up three games to two against Manhattan, DuJardin got the call he had waited for all his life.
"They told me to be ready."
In game six of the Eastern Conference final against the Manhattan Rage, DuJardin was inserted into the Wolfpack line-up. Unfortunately, the Rage prevailed 1-0, sending the series to a pivotal game seven.
"I didn't want to be the reason we lost. I knew it would be tough, but I also had to play hard and give it my all."
In game seven, DuJardin registered two blocked shots and was a plus 2, helping New England shock the league and advance to the Challenge Cup Final. In game one, DuJardin got physical. He unloaded on Eustace Eustachian in a fight, leaving Eustachian on the ice in a bloody mess.
"He hit one of my teammates from behind, and I just couldn't stand for that. He looked straight at me and smiled, so I pushed him. He cross checked me in the mouth. I just went off."
While they didn't get the win, they would in the second game tying the series up.
"It's definitely been a blessing for me. Playing in the SHL is unbelievable and I am so happy to be doing it in New England."
