DETROIT (AP) - Many believed the Detroit Falcons were reaching when they used the 6th overall position to select Jack Nero in S7 NWJHL draft. A couple weeks into the new season and Jack Nero appears to be all the Falcons had hoped he’d be.

Nero notched his first goal of the season in Monday night’s overtime loss to Boston, also picking up an assist and the game’s 1st star in the process. It was 9 minutes into the second quarter when Nero took a pass along the blueline and fired the equalizer into the back of the net. It was a shot which dropped some jaws and confirmed what co-general manager Jay May says she in Nero during the combine:

“Jack is an excellent puck mover and set up guy but what we were most impressed with was his shooting. He wasn’t the strongest shooter at the combine or even in the Junior-A…but the potential to improve into one of the best is what we saw. His mechanics are definitely improving into something phenomenal.”

Nero has shown a presence on the ice that made him quite popular with Detroit scouts. “He’s definitely established himself as a clubhouse leader”, says one teammate. On the ice, Nero has stepped under center of much of the Falcons offense. His 11 preseason assists were proof that not only can he create opportunities for his offense but it did not take long for him to establish chemistry with playmakers Swifte Schnieder and Robby Metcalf.
“I’m just taking as much as I can”, Nero told the media at Tuesday morning’s practice. “We have some excellent coaches within this organization…a big reason why I wanted to be a Falcon more than anything.” When asked about his first NWJHL goal, Nero smiled from ear to ear but remained humble at the microphone: “I would have rather us gotten the win…but it is a nice feeling. Usually once you get that first one, the rest follow…”

Nero and the Falcons will look to rebound from Monday’s overtime loss when they square off against a Washington team which also carries a 1-0-1 record. The Patriots have emerged early as the toughest defensive squad, leading the league in goals against average and boasting a penalty kill which has yet to give up a single goal.
