amazing how fast the hockey season flys by, at the start of the new year we will be at the half way point. Right now its look like Edmonton again is going to have a top pick, but i think thats the only team out west that you can look at today and say they will be in the race for the top pick at the end of the year

in the east, the Blue Jackets are bad. They might fluke out a run at the end of the year like they usually do, but they have been one of the worst teams in the league stats wise, not just wins and losses.

I think if Columbus is still last in the east come the deadline you'll see Ryan Johansen playing elsewhere, probably Nashville. think the top pick in the east will be Carolina or Columbus, and i think Columbus would have a hard time picking between Mathews and Chychrun, getting Chychrun adds to Werenski and Murray while keeping Johansen, while getting Mathews lets them replace Johansen and trade RyJo for say a Seth Jones

Carolina would take Mathews in a heartbeat.
I dont think it will be edmonton, unless they win the lotto.

The team was playing fairly well with mcdavid in the line up. Then they went real cold. They've been playing close to .500 hockey lately. Once McDavid comes back it will improve .

I think it'll be carolina or columbus.

Also Calgary should be considered for the west.
They have a brutal goals for/ against ratio.

Carolina is most likely, since they'll almost definitely trade E Staal at the deadline.
You're very fixated on this trading Ryan Johansen thing
Hopefully Arizona wins the sweepstake, even if that makes them better.

Well I am a blue jackets fan, that's knows a lot more about the team than anyone else here. Plus I can choose to talk about it as much as I'd like

You're right, as a Blue Jackets fan you must know everything about the team and their inner workings.

As a Sens fan I can confirm that Eric Karlsson is being shopped around for a Phillips screwdriver

I'm a Jackets fan too man, no need to go there Smile

I wouldn't be surprised to see RyJo go, but I could also see him staying, which I know is the least committal answer ever, but it's tricky. They aren't necessarily in win-now mode but the team will be hitting its collective prime in the next few years and if I were Columbus, I'd want a slightly more proven defenseman to work alongside Werenski instead of another top-notch prospect, so I'd lean towards trading Johansen if that's the only way to get that...but they can't contend without a true #1C either. They've got a lot of center depth, but is anyone good enough to fill his slot?

ETA: The Saad-Johansen-Foligno line was such fire in preseason, what happened? :( I know they were playing against half-AHL rosters in a lot of cases, so I wouldn't expect anywhere near that rate of production, but it's like the chemistry evaporated.

I would say they absolutely are in win now mode. Cap team, just fired a HC who just got an extention recently and gave up a high pick to get a brand new coach.

But that's also why I would only trade Johansen if you are for sure getting Mathews. He won't be a #1 C his rookie year but he won't be far off either.

It's like I heard someone make the comment tonight, Joey doesn't seem to want what Torts is selling, and I think Joey is feeling like the team isn't backing him. I mean they didn't give into his contract request a few off seasons ago, and now the new HC is publicly calling him out and playing him 4th line minutes.

I think deadline/draft day you'll see Johansen, Hartnett and maybe even Jack Johnson playing elsewhere. It would be cool of they could get say Chara to mentor a Murray/Werenski and maybe a Jones plus he can still play at a top 4 role.

Clarkson is coming back soon as well as Rychel and Chaput were both sent back to Cleveland tonight, and Rychel was playing well.

I think they are 2 years away from contending for the playoffs, but they will be a good contender. But they are acting like a win now mode team with the recent moves

I guess I'd say "win soon" mode as opposed to now--they're not like Pittsburgh with their core aging fast. But I agree about trading Joey if you're getting Matthews...but they're not going to know if they have the first pick until after the deadline.

I agree about the team not backing him, especially when they gave Saad the contract he wanted--which they had to, to get him, but that's got to sting if you're Johansen.

I'm not following the Bruins but I don't think trading for Chara would be wise at all, he's 38, he's got an NMC, a huge cap hit, and he's contracted through 2018. Jones is RFA after this year which would be expensive, but he would be perfect. Josi wouldn't be a bad choice either, if they could get him.

The cap is going to go up eventually. Plus you don't want anymore younger guys with little experience when you have Murray, Werensko, Jones and Savard, and plus like I said I think Hartnell and Johnson are playing elsewhere next year which would free up cap space. You would be left with those 4 who the most experienced player in that group has only about 3 full years of NHL time.

You would still have Tyutin but he's really broken down this year and might be done. He might be the Jared boll of the defense next year where he could be a healthy scratch or a situational player. So trading for Chara gives you the very experience that can still actually play a quality game every night without blocking the young guys development on term, not to mention that's one less player you have to worry about a next contract for.
