Yes folks, the much anticipated, highly exciting "ASK A GM" is back for it's 22nd edition!

For the young ins out there, this works much like a regular press conference, but it entails the SHL as a whole, not just the Jets. This includes league rules, controversial events in the league, whatever your heart desires.

The rules are simple: I have to answer every question truthfully (which I always do in these things), but do not goat me into tampering because it won't happen jack.

Now, without further ado, commence...

ASK A GM: PART 22

I don't understand changing lines every other game. Give your changes time to breath and gel. The constant tinkering is weird, almost like changes for the sake of changes.

Yeahthat

What would you say is the hardest aspect of managing a team? The easiest?

Easiest - day-to-day organization of the roster, lines, budget, things like that. I love organization so it comes easy to me.

Hardest - Apparently finding activity

Quote:Originally posted by Schultzy@Mar 12 2016, 05:45 PM
Interview Some have kicked around the idea of starting every new recruit with $3m in the bank right from the start to encourage them to stay and improve their player. What are your thoughts on this possible change? Do you think it would improve recruit retention?

Initial reaction is against it. The SMJHL already has that first article bonus and that is a good way for players to earn money quick, get known around the league, and become familiar with media and earning money. Of course not every member is good at writing articles and what not, but to give them money right away seems counter-productive to getting them to earn money around the league and be active. This opinion could definitely change though through discussion.

Are you able to comment on whether you will look to fill those spots internally or will you look to acquire some players via free agency or trades?

If you don't feel comfortable addressing this in a public thread that is fine by me Smile

The holes that we did have going into this season have all been filled internally. Johnny Cahill is ready to make the jump and he'll replace Uptuck in our top 6. Petr Kolesnikovs is penciled into our lineup this season as well to fill the hole in our top 9. The last hole is obvious, replacing Prikulis, and Lukas Berger is coming in to take the reigns there.

We explored upgrading through trades and free agency, but nothing has come up yet, but those doors are always open.

02) Have you ever had trouble maintaining activity due to real life, or even lack of interest?

1. Ha, I get it. Not forever, no, but I'm not sure when that time will come yet.

2. Not yet. My real life is rather flexible with down time so I always seem to find time for the league. I haven't had a lack of interest either and hopefully that doesn't happen.

What's the most important part of choosing your lineups?

1. He's brought a manly smell, one that makes you want to chop wood and shoot whiskey before game time.

2. Balance, always balance.

Follow up:

What steps do you take to gauge activity from SMJHL prospects? And coming from someone whose contract negotiations tend to go like:

Leafs: Contract time is up, what are you looking for?
Jack: $3 mill/year for three seasons?
Leafs: NTC?
Jack: Naw.
Leafs: Done.

What do other negotiations tend to look like? And any interesting/entertaining stories arising from them?

1. May sound weird, but if I recognize a prospect's username, that's a good sign of activity, at least to me.

2. I always start my negotiations the same, what are you looking for? If it's reasonable, we'll agree right away. I'll only ever wiggle on money if it's a bit too much, but hardly ever happens. My thinking is, it's my job to fit the players in the budget, not theirs. If they're looking for a certain number, I should make it work for them. Honestly, I wish I had stories from my negotiations, but if a player is willing to sign a contract with the Jets, we're in agreement within 2 PMs (first - what do you want?, second - deal!Wink.

The answer you seek is not hard to find, but you must find it in you to believe it to be true.

If time and a half, yes.

Quote:Originally posted by IncorrectAtlas@Mar 13 2016, 01:04 PM
Right now, it looks like exactly one Jets rookie will be nominated for the Jesster. Will you be disappointed in the other one?

Now for some food-related questions.

Does cereal count as soup?

Favorite wine?

How do you feel about Jamaican beef patties?

Disappointed? Absolutely not. In my opinion, both Fleming and Robertson should be nominated and there's still a chance for that to happen as I've not seen the nominees. Fleming was great in a top 9 role and Robertson came and stepped up in a top 4 role on defence and played very well. Both should be considered. Even if one or none of those 2 get nominated, both were amazing for the Jets and should only get better.

Is this the new "is a hot dog a sandwich" question? It is not a soup.

I don't drink wine, don't like the taste.

I was introduced to them in high school, thought they were just alright.

I think there were a handful of candidates who could of gone first overall. I was more focused on the prospects who could be available at my picks and am very happy with who we ended up with.

In your long history as GM, who has been the best Jets player?
Pretty sure Lance Uppercut has been the most successful individually. Littleton played in an era without inflated scoring, but he has 2 cup wins to Uppercut's 1.

There are so many great ones and each stake a claim in their own way. Mexico is arguably the best player ever so he has to be up there. Then there's McBride and Prikulis. As for current, Onoprienko has a great chance to top the list and he still has more seasons here.

<!--QuoteBegin-EuroCap@Mar 13 2016, 04:45 PM
Would you ever shell out a 22M contract so that person can tell Byrde he isn't the highest paid anymore?
No. 22 million for one player, get out of here with that.
While avoiding getting into details (trade secrets and such), what aspect of line-making do you think is most often overlooked by GMs?
