It is with a heavy heart that we have announce this. The rules against tampering don't leave much room with lenience here, but it has to be done.

The Buffalo Stampede have been found tampering with a player under contract with another team. With Portland's buyout of GroupMeIsKindOfOkay's player, Reed Laing, TDW sought out to ask how much money his player is looking for in free agency. Reed Laing is still under contract to the Admirals at this time. Buffalo's GM ThatDamnWalrus got permission from RomanesEuntDomus to talk to Alex, and while he did his due diligence, the rule is very clear - you cannot reach out to any player on another contract to search for contract demands that player might have in free agency.

The punishment for tampering is harsh. However, due to the circumstances of TDW following due dilligence to see if Alex's player was a free agent, we have lowered the punishment against the Stampede.

We know that TDW has done an excellent job managing the franchise, and we have no doubts that he and his team will be able to bring success to the Buffalo Stampede in spite of this ruling.

RED got punished because he (incorrectly) told Walrus he was allowed to speak to Alex, speaking on behalf of the HO without speaking to them first.

They don't forfeit firsts because Walrus did what he was supposed to - he asked HO whether he was allowed to speak with Alex yet. It's not really his fault the Head Office member screwed up. (That said, it could be argued that he should have known, since such a stink was raised over the timing of the buyout announcement)

Edit: Not saying I agree or disagree with the ruling, just explaining the reasoning as I understand it.
Walrus already quit

The tampering happened before that stink was raised - if it'd happened after, there would 100% have been a full punishment. The fact that that read as an "immediate" announcement to originally was taken into account.

Just for the record, that stink for the most part happened like 2 days after the buyout post.

I read the fkn OP. The rule CLEARLY states that compliance buyouts don't take effect until OFFSEASON. Why should the punishment be lightened because Buffalo is collectively illiterate?
