Rabidsponge's Season S20 Draft Class Review

10 Biggest Busts from the S20 Draft

1) Jaden Maxfield - 24th Overall Rage
Quick Statline - Games Played: 3 - Goals: 0 - Assists: 0 - Points: 0
- The highest picked player that draft year to essentially waste a pick for the Rage. Playing only 3 games for them before disappearing forever from the SHL this 24th overall pick stings just a bit looking back who was still available into even the 50's.

2) Le Scucker - 28th Oveall Wolfpack
Quick Statline - Games Played: 50 - Goals: 3 - Assists: 0 - Points: 3
- Not much better than Maxfield, Scucker saw at least 50 games worth of action and managed to score 3 times in the big league, but short of that his career fizzled out fast, and the wolfpack were left empty handed.

3) Keith Trubachev - 22nd Overall Wolfpack
Quick Statline - Games Played: 204 - Goals: 6 - Assists: 6 - Points: 12
- Another wolfpack pick wasted as they took Trubachev with their 22nd overall selection. Trending upwards for the team at least, Trubachev managed to give them someone to fill the line up for 4 seasons and rewarded them with a massive....12....points. Yeesh.

4) Jakub Krejci - 35th Overall Wolfpack
Quick Statline - Games Played: 100 - Goals: 0 - Assists: 0 - Points: 0
- I'm starting to sound like a broken record already, but this pick was a throw away. Their 35th Overall selection of Krejci proved to be a complete waste as even seeing 100 games for them, didn't even register a single point.

5) James Adkins - 37th Overall Stars
DID NOT PLAY
- The Highest pick in the S20 draft who didnt even see 1 game of playing time. James Adkins, we barely knew thee.

6) Sam Samsinov - 8th Overall Wolfpack
Quick Statline - Games Played: 206 - Goals: 23 - Assists: 65 - Points: 88
- Being a top 10 pick carries some weight and expectations with it, and those were all shortly crushed by the short lived career of Samsinov. Producing fairly well in his short time, Samsinov called it quits after only 4 short seasons. The wolfpack were left empty handed once again wasting a top 10 picks on a short lived project which didn't pan out at all. Lessend by their 3rd, 5th, 7th, 20th and 33rd picks, this one still stings a little looking back at what type of player they could have nabbed (See Sarantez @ 12 or Eriksson @ 13).

7) John Heimer-Schmidt - 27th Overall Platoon
Quick Stat line - Games Played: 358 - Goals: 55 - Assists: 89 - Points: 144
- The second swing and miss for the Platoon in the top 30, grabbing JHS they had most likey hoped for at least a center with 1st line potential, instead they were gifted with a depth level player who ultimately fizzled out after only 7 seasons. His 144 points over 358 left many wanting more, but he had already headed out the pasture.

8) Jed Hacket - 29th Overall Jets
Quick Stat line - Games Played: 459 - Goals: 45 - Assists: 137 - Points: 182
- A top 30 pick, Jed Hacket was maybe not expected to be light out for the Jets at the time, but they had most likely hoped to get something from the player. Delivering to them a pretty lengthy career of 459 games over 9 seasons, Hacket unfortunately couldn't deliver on the score sheet enough and in comparison to the rest of his class, 182 points just isn't going to cut it.

9) Bryson Thomaz - 15th Overall Platoon
Quick Statline - Games Played: 398 - Goals: 97 - Assists: 136 - Points: 233
- A top 15 pick in what seems like a crazy deep draft, the Platoon selected Bryson Thomaz. He enjoyed a fairly decent 8 seasons in the league, but ultimately never even broke 250 points for the team, and in such a deep draft, to only draw 8 season from him, seems a bit of waste. Shame.

10) Toki Wartooth - 21st Overall Stars
Quick Statline - Games Played: 708 - Goals: 28 - Assists: 172 - Points: 200
- Seeing Wartooth stat line all laid out doesn't seem to bad, and realistically he has been more than servicable for the Stars over the years. The problem? He was their 21st overall pick, and seeing who was still on the board, they could have got way more bang for their buck.

Top 15 Players from the S20 Draft

1) Shl Jakob Tanner - 38th Overall Steelhawks
Quick Statline - Games Played: 436 Record: 241-152-42 - SV%: .905 - GAA: 2.59 - SO: 25 - 1st Stars: 40
Teams: Hamilton (10) -> New England (2)
Awards: Joe McKeil (S24), John McBride (S29), Mike Honcho (S29), Anton Razov (S30)
Cups: S24 (HAM), S26 (HAM), S30 (NEW), S31 (NEW)
- Did we really expect anyone else in this spot yet? Not quite hitting the heights of some of the skaters in his class only playing 12 seasons, but the 12 he did, he made sure to make a mark. 4 individual trophies. 4 cup rings. over 240 wins. 25 shut outs. 40 1st star nods. Best save % in season (Realism Era). The awards and stats speak for themselves. Tanner was one of the best for his generation. 10 seasons with the steelhawks which brought him 2 cups, and 2 with the wolfpack to close out his career. It will take a little bit extra for someone to knock him off the top as the top player from the S20 draft.

2) Wolfpack Nathan Russel - 7th Overall Wolfpack
Quick Statline - Games Played: 708 - Goals: 204 - Assists: 357 - Points: 561 - +/-: +156 - Faceoff %: 55.20%
Teams: New England (14)
Awards: Jeff Dar (S28, S30), Damien Littleton (S32)
Cups: S23 (NEW), S30 (NEW), S31 (NEW), S33 (NEW)
- 200+ Goals. 350+ Assists. 550+ Points. +156. 55.20% Faceoff wins. 7 SHG's. 12 SH Points. 4 Cups. 2x 2 way forward of the year awards. 1984 hits. 143 PP Points. Russell has such an even stat line it's not possible to not pay mad respect. Yes his career has not been as flashy on the score sheet as some, but what he does on the ice as a WHOLE is something to be impressed by. Easily one of the greatest 2 way forwards the league has seen, Russell comes in at the number 2 spot. He continues to wrestle with the idea of when to retire or how, but the day he does will be a sad one for the wolfpack and the league. He has put on a clinic for displaying a complete 2 way game and continues to show dedication to the league on and off the ice. Truly one of the great, and a lock for the Top 5 of his class no matter how many more games others try to play to get past him.

3) Platoon Bojo Biscuit - 2nd Overall Platoon
Quick Statline - Games Played: 758 - Goals: 93 - Assists: 426 - Points: 519 - PIM: 1412 - SB: 993
Teams: West Kendall (15)
Awards: Turd Ferguson (S22, S26), Lance Uppercut (S25, S26), Damien Littleton (S27, S31)
Cups: None
- The man with the cat. I mean the Defenseman who should have a walker by this point, Bojo Biscuit. Being a life time platoon member you just know the name Biscuit will be heading for the rafters, the plaques, and to the press box to mingle with fans til he is old and grey because he is a platoon legend. Closing out the S34 season he comes in with 758 games played for WKP, 519 points, 1400+ penalty minutes, and almost a THOUSAND shots blocked. Toss in 2 Turds, 2 Uppercuts and some Littles? And you have a trophy case that looks pretty packed. The cup keeps eluding him sadly though, as his career hits Ray Bourque levels of cup drought sadness. There isn't much gas left in the tank so one has to wonder if he will finish out as a platoon member or chase that cup one last time.

4) Dragons Nicholas Pederson - 42nd Overall Stars
Quick Statline - Games Played: 713 - Goals: 242 - Assists: 372 - Points: 614 - +/-: +121 - GWG: 34
Teams: Minnesota (1) -> Los Angeles (4) -> Calgary (10)
Awards: None
Cups: S27 (CGY), S29 (CGY), S32 (CGY)
- Not holding any specific 1st place titles among stats for his class doesn't effect the career Pederson has had. Originally being selected by Toronto, he slowly made his way to Calgary where he now calls home and where he has won all 3 of his cups. Sitting in 2nd place for the S20 scoring race, Pedersons career has been one revolving around consistency. Holding the 2nd best +/- of the class, as well as breaking the 30 mark GWG shows that Pederson knows when to back check and when he is needed to shoot rather than pass. A franchise favourite I am sure in Calgary, I'd fully expect his jersey to be raised into the rafters for the Dragons.

5) Shl Griffin Simons - 36th Overall Steelhawks
Quick Statline - Games Played: 658 - Goals: 208 - Assists: 355 - Points: 563 - GWG: 45 - SB: 210
Teams: Hamilton (10) -> Toronto (1) -> Minnesota (2)
Awards: Ryan Jesster (S21), Anton Razov (S24, S26)
Cups: S24 (HAM), S26 (HAM)
- The first member of the Top 5 is Griffin Simons. Sporting 3 pieces of personal hardware, mixed with 2 cup wins during the middle of his career and a side of 200 + goals and 560+ points AND the most shot blocks of the forwards with 210 show he was committed to a complete game. Bouncing around a bit at the end of his career, I think he will always remain a fan favourite in Steel town having spent 10 of his 13 seasons there, helping them win the 2 cups in 4 seasons. His 45 GWG is 2nd best among his class as well which shows he knew when and where to score to deliver the W's when needed.

6) :admirals: Pedro Sarantez - 12th Overall Chiefs
Quick Stat line - Games Played: 757 - Goals: 310 - Assists: 363 - Points: 673 - Shots: 2724 - GWG: 58
Teams: Minnesota (9) -> Edmonton (5) -> Portland (1)
Awards: None
Cups: None
- The leading scorer for his draft class, Sarantez slides in just shy of the Top 5. Sitting only 27 points of the 700 mark for points, breaking the 300 goal mark (the only member of his class to do so), the highest shot total, and GWG with 58 (next closest is 45) has his career being next to lights out. Despite all of this, after 15 seasons Sarantez has no personal hardware or cups to show for his efforts and because of this, he is held just shy of the that Top 5 honour. His day may still come at the twilight of his career, but currently he sits pretty comfortably to at least say he was the best statistically for his class, and by a fairly large margin too (currently).

7) Stars Kristian Eriksson - 13th Overall Stars
Quick Statline - Games Played: 708 - Goals: 287 - Assists: 297 - Points: 584 - Hits: 2087 - PPG: 69
Teams: Toronto (14)
Awards: Ron Mexico (S31)
Cups: None
- This long time Stars player has been nothing but consistent and loyal for his franchise. Now 14 seasons (every one he has played in the SHL duh) Eriksson has been the heart and soul of the Toronto franchise. He has bleed blue and white for his career, and has done nothing but pile up the points. Unfortunately he has yet to see the cup raised in his career, but a recent Ron Mexico win gives him at least a bit of comfort for the success of his career as a whole. Sitting just shy of 300 goals and assists and currently 3rd for his class in scoring, Eriksson still seems not ready to shut it down, and wants more. Lets hope there is much more cause it's a treat to watch his career continue with each season passing.

8) Panthers Chester Cunningham - 31st Overall Stars
Quick Statline - Games Played: 707 - Goals: 209 - Assists: 358 - Points: 567 - Hits: 1768 - PP Points: 146
Teams: Toronto (11) -> Los Angeles (3)
Awards: Jeff Dar (S32)
Cups: None
- Enjoying a bit of late career success Cunningham comes into the list at number 8. Being one of his class not afraid to play the body, he comes bruising in with currently 1768 hits to his list and an impressive 146 power play points to match it. Recently winning the Jeff Dar award finally gives him something to brag about for his career even if a cup has still eluded him. Being a loyal member of the Stars for 11 seasons, he now finds himself in LA chasing a cup from the west. Just clearing the 200 mark for goals this year, and sitting 5th on his classes scoring list (1 behind Lloren and 5 up on Boyka) an extra season or two to maybe jump a spot or two might still be lingering in the back of his mind. A premier power forward.

9) Platoon Jed Lloren - 11th Overall Platoon
Quick Statline - Games Played: 758 - Goals: 240 - Assists: 328 - Points: 568 - PPG: 55 - GTG: 27
Teams: West Kendall (7) -> Texas (2) -> West Kendall (2) -> Seattle (3) -> West Kendall (1)
Awards: Lance Uppercut (S25, S26)
Cups: None
- Winning GM of the year twice Lloren's career has been one of longevity. Not sporting any player based hardward, or unfortunately any cups to his resume, he has made a point to always make sure his name makes it to the score sheet, and to return to West Kendall. Now in his 3rd stint for the team, Lloren closed out S34 sitting just shy of 570 points and 250 goals. Sitting 4th in scoring in his class, and having the most Game tying goals he could claw his way forward into a few more leads depending how long he decides to string this out. Regardless of the decision to retire or not, he will most likely still have his name somewhere in the stands on a West Kendall jersey and maybe even a plaque in the arena.

10) Jets Yuri Boyka - 33rd Overall Wolfpack
Quick Statline - Games Played: 708 - Goals: 234 - Assists: 328 - Points: 562 - PPG: 58 - PP Points: 162
Teams: Los Angeles (7) -> Texas (5) -> Winnipeg (2)
Awards: None
Cups: None
- The first member of the Top 10 is Yuri Boyka. Splitting the Majority of his career between Los Angeles and Texas, the forward made a living on the power play and under the goal column. Still pushing himself at the end of S34, he is still making line ups in the SHL currently playing for the Jets. Will he have a season 15? Even if he doesn't ending it with 560+ points is something to look back on and be proud of. Clocking in 7th in scoring for his class currently, I'd say it's been a pretty solid career.

11) Shl Friedrich Müller - 4th Overall Steelhawks
Quick Statline - Games Played: 608 - Goals: 134 - Assists: 286 - Points: 420 - PPG: 75 - PP Points: 149
Teams: Hamilton (3) -> Edmonton (7) -> Buffalo (2)
Awards: Aidan Richan (S21), Scott Stevens (S32)
Cups: S28 (EDM)
- Just outside the Top 10 is the German Defenseman Friedrich Müller. Only lasting 12 seasons Müller still managed to have a career ending point total to currently have him 12th on the list for his class despite having ended with 50-100 games played less than most behind or even ahead of him. His 75 PPG leads his class, and looks like it won't be touched, and his 134 goals has him still in front of his fellow defense men by at least 15 still currently. 2 Awards and a Ring to go with it Müller ends his career with bang with his Stevens win.

12) Riot Dean Colt - 20th Overall Wolfpack
Quick Statline - Games Played: 731 - Goals: 147 - Assists: 314 - Points: 461 - Faceoff Win: 10,916 - Faceoff %: 55.81%
Teams: New England (7) -> Hamilton (3) -> Edmonton (1) -> Seattle (4)
Awards: Turd Ferguson (S31)
Cups: S23 (NEW)
- One to speak out often and always seem to cause a bit of a ruckus (until he just claimed to be a born again sawftie), Dean Colt has dominanted the face off dot during his career. Winning almost 11 THOUSAND faceoffs all while doing it close to a 56% win rate is borderline bonkers. Mix that in with a bit of personal hardware, a cup early in his career, and a career total approaching the 500 point mark, and you have a pretty obvious choice for the the top 15 of his class.

13) Riot Barney Stinson - 17th Overall Stars
Quick Statline - Games Played: 705 - Goals: 108 - Assists: 371 - Points: 479 - PPA: 111 - PP Point: 172
Teams: Toronto (3) -> Manhattan (1) -> Edmonton (2) -> Toronto (3) -> Minnesota (1) -> Edmonton (3) -> Seattle (1)
Awards: Scott Stevens (S29)
Cups: None
- Still trucking along at the end of S34, Stinson comes into the list @ 13. Another well travelled player (never spending more than 3 seasons anywhere yet) Stinson sits just 29 points shy of the 400 mark. Having won a Stevens near the tail end of his career shows maybe he has a little more gas in the tank than many might have guessed. This is right before regression mind you and one has to wonder how much longer he will keep going. Having the most power play assists and points of anyone in his draft class, Stinson has shown where his comfort zone lies, and before it's all said and done might just be the best power play specialist of the S20 class.

14) Shl Jackson - Rogers Tanaka - 16th Overall Blizzard
Quick Statline - Games Played: 558 - Goals: 99 - Assists: 310 - Points: 409 - +/-: +61 - PP Points: 138
Teams: Edmonton (11)
Awards: Lance Uppercut (S27, S31)
Cups: S28 (EDM)
- The most productive member of his draft class, JRT posted 409 points in only 558 games by far the best production for so little games played, that alone has him nab a top 15 spot. Finishing 1 goal shy of the century mark, and 1 cup ring to his name JRT might have been a bit of a victim of the times as to why he was never able to grab any hardware as a player. Still he was able to use his skills as a GM to bring home GM of the year twice, and a cup to Edmonton in S28. Consistent and potent in his shorter career JRT gets a thumbs up from me.

15) Shl Chuck Goody - 1st Overall Rage
Quick Statline - Games Played: 562 - Goals: 73 - Assists: 320 - Points: 393 - SB: 779 - PP Points: 106
Teams: Manhattan (5) -> Texas (1) -> Toronto (1) -> Edmonton (2) -> Minnesota (2) -> Los Angeles (1)
Awards: Scott Stevens (S23)
Cups: S20 (MAN), S28 (EDM)
- It's always more fun to start from the bottom and count up. So lets start at 15. Grabbing the last spot on the list for me, is the well travelled defenseman Chuck Goody. Coming in just shy of 400 points for the career I have Goody in here because of his overall production over games played. A few of the players surrounding him could still surpass him, but he has done what they have in a shorter span of games. One of the few in his class to win a Scott Stevens award Goody enjoyed a fairly succesful career, but unfortunately never won a cup. At least you made Rabidsponges Top 15 list right? :D

WOO top-5 bust!

It would be more impressive if it wasn't your fifth time on one of these lists.
