I think with out a doubt we need a more clear description of certain awards. Awards such as the Stevens, which has no criteria but " SCOTT STEVENS TROPHY: Awarded to the best defenseman ".

So what constitutes " the best defenceman "? What is the actual criteria for this award?

As it stands now, the Stevens criteria is in the eyes of the beholder and those voting. Each year it maybe new people and each of them may value any of the many statistics we have to judge defensive performances completely on a differentlevel.

Could we please, PLEASE create specific criteria for this award. That way we will know what our targets are and build accordingly. As well as create a consistent winner based on their performance in the specified guidelines given for the trophy.

Maybe a point system with different values for each of the criteria statistics. Much like the way fantasy works.
Its just like the Norris trophy, its weird :S
Unless you put in some kind of algorithm it is always going to he subjective. So I don't see the point. And I think an algorithm would be an asinine suggestion.

Play one season in the league and you will know what stats are important. The cream will rise to the top regardless.

You would think, but you and I really don't seem to see eye to eye on this most seasons. Even when neither of us is a serious contender.

I value +/- highly were, if I'm not mistaken. You think it's a inaccurate stat, correct?

Either way, most times it's a close race it seems who you publicly promote, I seldom do and favor the other worthy player.

Some clarity on wtf it actually is would be amazing! The Norris is not a defensive scoring race first and everything else second. So why is it we always seem to favor the top point man when a player with a few less points has a better, even if only a little, but still better overall better complimentary stats?
Because overall points are the most clear indicator of general performance in helping a team win. The benefit of hits is unknown but demonstrates another facet to the game and blocked shots are dependant on how good or bad the team is defensively.

There are also other factors like goals, how far you are on the depth chart in scoring, minutes, usage, etc. Meaning a simple algorithm that could take into account all these factors is near impossible and you couldn't get a consensus on how that algorithm would be done in the first place.
Honestly the Stevens should just go to me every season

Hmm He's onto something here....

Honestly..... Major grading factors....

PTS - Goals - SB - Hits vs PIM - PKM - PPPoints vs 5v5 PTS - P/20 vs AVG TOI - and overall impact on a team

I know the last one can be valued in different ways, but if the player was by far the best D man for their team, and weren't purposefully over used, then that has to effect the grading as well.
Hits are an awkward thing to grade on as some players purposefully don't hit often.

You could probably make an equation to see how valuable a player they were to their team using %ofTeamTotal, or %ofTeamDefenseTotal metrics to compare how much they made up their team's defense. Also a high TOI is a super indicator that the player is extremely valuable to the team, and if you want to take out the impact it has on stats just do Xper20 or Xper60s.

It's a lot easier to just use fully subjective reasoning considering that even after you get all the numbers there are still impossible comparisons to make to value some things over others. Also then a player could just build to abuse the formula you make, while some others would still be amazing players but not build to win said award (aka defensive players right now, but a fully defensive player probably wouldn't win the norris anyways since they're only playing half the game)

Realistically, we would need to track GO and TO to value defensive builds more, but we can't do that on the current sths version

"The James Norris Memorial Trophy, or simply the Norris Trophy, is awarded annually to the National Hockey League's top "defense player who demonstrates throughout the season the greatest all-round ability in the position".

Okay. You realize how ambiguous that is, though.

It is only if you try and make it so!

What is there to misinterpreted, All around to me says in every facet of the position, not just the best hitter, most points and so on. The best rounded defender wins.

Yes we are the SHL not the NHL but we losely base our entire league off of the NHL as our closest comparison.
