Game 7 Western Conference Finals, Overtime...

The league’s oldest player, 23 year veteran Esa Anrikkanen takes the ice for his first shift of overtime, just a minute into the period, his bones creak as he jumps over the boards, it’s more of a lumbering roll than a jump, but he gets his 255 pound parm-laden frame on the ice.

He lines up for the face off in the Dragons zone flanking Randy Randleman and power forward Mike Izzy with Adam Kaiser and Michael “Big Game” Boychuk on defense. Esa can feel the energy rushing through his body as he knows this could be one of his last opportunities to go to the cup finals. He’s been in 17 playoffs and played in 4 different SHL decades, who knows how long much longer he has left. He knows he has to leave it all out on the ice and his experience tells him he has to dig deep on this first shift and try to get a quality scoring chance, but the first objective is get possession of the puck on this face off and get it out of the dragons zone.

Randleman gets too eager and is booted from the face off circle, Esa and Izzy look at each other and Esa gives Izzy the nod to step in and take the draw. Winnipeg’s Vijanuputan Singh wins the draw, puck goes back to Crossfit Jesus on the half boards, Jesus is looking to pass to the point, Esa reads his eyes and get himself in position, Jesus lets the pass go, Esa lunges and intercepts it!

Esa has stolen the puck and gained possession for Calgary, he quickly moves it to a streaking Randleman who carries it through the neutral zone and into the Winnipeg zone. Randleman takes it deep pulls up and passes to Kaiser at the point, Kaiser walks the line and dishes down to Esa on the half boards. The veteran assesses the play and let’s everyone take position in the offensive zone, he then moves it up to Big Game Boychuk who looks for a shot, but Winnipeg’s Luke Fleming is in the lane, Boychuk passes over to Kaiser on the other point, he looks for a shot but there’s traffic, Kaiser moves it cross ice to Izzy on opposite half boards. Izzy takes it down low into the corner looking for Randleman in front but Gary Grease is all over him, Izzy cycles it back up to the point to Boychuk.

Esa slides out to the opposite hash mark, he’s wide open, Big Game Boychuk sees him but walks it in and fakes a shot which brings Zhumbayev to the top of his crease, then Boycuk delivers a perfect pass as he’s done so many times before to Esa, the 23 year veteran quickly rips it top corner over a sprawling the Zhumbayev, the water bottle pops off the top of the net, GOAL!!! Old Balls Esa has scored the game 7 overtime winner! The Dragons are going to the finals! One of the biggest goals of the veteran’s career!

Wanted to chronicle this as I’m happy to say 23 seasons and over 4 full years in this league, the excitement I felt last night over my player and my team was really special and one of the many things I love about the SHL.

I’ve put a lot of work into Esa over the years and he’s still pretty darn good. Even though I have him in more of a depth role now, seeing him have success on a big stage in a clutch moment that helped the team was really fun.

I figured I better write about him because who knows how many clutch moments he has left. He continues to write his legacy on the ice and remains a classy player off the ice. From time to time we gotta give him some props though.

23 seasons and still can bring the fans out of their seats. Not bad.

Also wanted to give a shoutout to my good buddy and fellow Old Balls teammate Nicholas Pedersen for scoring in the game also. mstuk41

As always much respect to Winnipeg who played an awesome series and have a great team.

I’m really proud of the Dragons this year, we had to battle in that series, it wasn’t pretty at times but we found a way to get it done. No question we have another big task at hand going up against an excellent Minnesota team in the finals. Should be a great series.

With any luck Old Balls Esa will score a couple goals and help his team win the cup, but really he just wants the W and to eat parms afterwards then take a nap.

Cheers

Great work man. Hopefully you pop in a few more in the finals.
Didn't realize I was on the ice for that one!

Obviously I'm not super happy about your big goal seeing as it ended our season, but after your dramatic come back from being down 3-1 in the series I would love to see you guys go all the way!

Good luck in the finals! Dragons

In his defense, I was in SCOR voice driving back from a race. The game had been simmed for probably 30-45 minutes at that point, so it was fair game. I knew we had lost, but not that it went to OT or that Esa scored the game-winner.
