In a quarterly stakeholders’ call, Detroit Falcons co-GM and Chief Financial Officer Stephen Elgrok noted a recent merchandising spike, setting records for post-season jersey and t-shirt sales.  “Jerseys are up 45% on season rate, especially for captains Passamus, Fantobens, and Smeb.  Player name t-shirt sales are up 66% on season and other merchandise is up 10-15% across the board,” Elgrok told media and ownership in a fireworks show of a finance call.  These numbers set new records across the franchise for post-season sales, leading the league in numbers and gross earnings.

The question, of course, is how?  What is driving this spike in sales?  We have no further to look than Halifax.  The sudden and heated rivalry between the Falcons and Raiders has given birth to a whole new form of revenue for the league leaders:  Jersey burnings.  Between Youtube, Instagram, Facebook, reddit, and a series of hashtags including #BurnTheFalcons and #DetroitFire, jerseys are being burned all over the Halifax metro.  Early reports indicate comments made by Halifax rookie forward Troy Reynolds has ignited a bitter disdain from the ninth-finishing team’s fanbase, resulting in massive purchasing and destruction of Falcons merchandise.

“I just hate those guys, y’know?” said Halifax superfan One-Tooth Jerry.  “They think they’re so good, but these Halifax kids deserve to win.  You can’t take candy from a baby, and we got all kinds of babies on Halifax.”  Across hashtags and social media, his words were echoed by the vast majority of the Halifax fanbase.

We reached out to Elgrok’s office for comment and clarity on the situation.  “I don’t really give a shit who buys our product,” Elgrok said, laughing.  “All those new fans will have their fun picking on the old guard, and that’s fine.  But ultimately we get that money, and we’re going to enjoy it.”
The Falcons meet the Raptors at JetBlue Arena tonight for their first semifinal game, tonight at 7:00 PM EST.
