Player prompt
If the coach asked me to drop the mitts & I was the only one who step up to the plate I would do it. Being one of the more quiet guys on the team I am not usually one of the people starting the fights or scrums in the corners. In minors I had a couple fights & won 3 & lost 1 so not too bad. When the team needs a spark I’m willing to do it. I’ve worked hard to get in shape & make sure my strength is where it needs to be. One of my last fights in junior was actually again someone I grew up with, he hit our captain & it was intentionally to hurt him. I didn’t even know who it was I just started throwing fits & next thing you know the refs were ripping me off of him. So I’ll step up when needed but won’t be the first to throw a punch unless deserved. 165 words

Fighting is needed in hockey to keep the players safe. Without fighting there is no response to a dirty hit other than another dirtier hit. If that cycle continues then the chances of players getting hurt increase exponentially. When fighting is allowed (within reason of course) players are held accountable for their hits and actions. This knowledge that there will be a response to any action that is taken deters players from deliberately injuring other players. With that being said I am not encouraging we bring back the spectacle fighting from the past and add players that only fight to every team. I think there is a time and place for a needed fight. If you ban it all together it just endangers the other players on the ice. There is rarely a need for a fight right at the beginning of a  period, but only in response for an action by the other team.

Fighting is such an interesting and unique part of the sport that adds a whole new layer to player characteristics and behaviour. The fact one can fight helps tone down some of the violance that might generate due to strong collisions. In other sports there is no way to "retalliate" so players will do things outside the rule book to get their revenge. In hockey, if a player feels slighted, they can just go ahead and demand satisfaction in an old fashioned duel. That being said I feel there can be better waya to enforce combat rules and refs need to let some fights go on a little bit longer. Nowadays they just jump at the first sign of slowdown, without giving either player a chance. Let them fight and prove their strenght in combat. I do hope that players are less afraid of fighting, even if they are stars of the team. I know coaches don't like it but a good fight can boost the teams morale. As far as its done sparingly

PLAYER PROMPT

OH HELL YEAH I AM! DAD is a big hitter and he can fights when it is the right time to do it. DAD always been in the top in terms of hits and he loves to crush his opponents. When we're winning or not, he will find a way to crush someone. In this situation, we are losing pretty badly and coach knows that DAD is the guy to put on the ice and give a gigantic hit to the best opposing player. He know that he will have to face the consequences, but he is not afraid of anybody in the league. Not even Baku, he's teammate in Regina back in the days. DAD is 2-3 in fights and he will do everything he can to bring the record at.500 if someone wants to fight him. Fighting is not the aspect DAD loves the most about hockey, but he knows he's pretty good at it. When the moment is rightly chose, he will fight for his team and show to the league that it is not because they are leading by 5+ goals that TEX will never lie down.

Written Task:  What are your thoughts on fighting in hockey? It's definitely a lot less common these days, do you think that's a good thing? Do you think it has a place in the game, or that it's overdue to disappear entirely? Maybe you wish it happened more often? In your opinion, what circumstances justify a hockey fight? Specific things? Any time you want for entertainment's sake? Tell me your thoughts! (150+ words)

I like hockey fights when it's about defending your player who got a harsh check or is getting dogged the whole game. I wasn't around for goon era of the NHL, and I'm kind of charmed by it? I love John Scott and think his insight on the sport is neat, and like the idea of big beefy players protecting their super stars. I think fighting to fight is lame though, and fights that derail the game suck. I get when a team is down by a lot, and they're upset at the end of the game. I'm down with that. I'm also down with an entire line shucking their gloves a la New York Rangers after Wilson messed with Panarin in the game previous. Dudes that are always looking for a fight vs players protecting their teammates is where I start to waver, though, and dudes who fight game after game suck and bring the sport down.

This is a tough one. Fighting has certainly become rarer since I was first introduced to hockey and I haven’t quite figured out if that’s good or bad. The reduced physicality has allowed for players like McDavid to exist which has elevated the level of play from more physical eras. I don’t know if fighting will always exist in hockey, but that reputation will always be there. I go to my college’s games and it feels like 80 percent of the student section doesn’t know the first thing about the sport but thinks that a fight will break out because it’s a hockey game. Like they all are screaming at these kids to fight despite the full cages and severe repercussions from the NCAA for actually getting in a fight. I will say that fighting in hockey is what sets it apart from other sports. Sure there are brawls in football and baseball every now and then but there is a level of mutual respect ingrained in hockey fights which no other sport can emulate.

I feel like in Baltimore if anything needs to get done, it falls on the shoulders of me, Lord Raiden. I am the veteran player on the team. I lead by example. So if the coach wants me to go fight then I will fight. I may not be a fighter but I am still one of the strongest players on the team so I can hold my own. The coach would normally probably ask Don Juan or Gravy Train. But in the first home game and we need someone to make a statement. Well that player is me. We obviously will not win the game being down 5. So it will not hurt having me off the ice. But maybe that will spark up the team and get them motivated. As I have not had a fight in my career, I would hope that this is not a daily occurring feat that I need to take on. But hopefully we will be able to keep games closer and surprise a bunch of teams this season.

Hockey Prompt:

Like the cave man I am, I enjoy a good hockey fight, but I'd be lying if I said there wasn't a little part of me that was worried for the players involved. When it's a Sens player fighting I'm doubly invested, but I'm also doubly worried for my guy. I've been spoiled as a fan of the Senators to have had some great fighters, I grew up watching Chris Neil and Ray Emery, and as I got older there was always someone like Mark Borowiecki or today Brady Tkachuk who was willing to drop the gloves. Probably my favourite hockey moment of all time was when the Sens had a line brawl with the Habs and ended up winning all five fights. With all that said, I don't think it's a bad thing that the NHL is moving away from fighting. With all we've learned about concussions and CTE recently, it doesn't seem like a good idea for guys to be bare knuckle boxing each other on the ice.

PLAYER PROMPT
I'm actually unsure of what Leon would do in this situation. He's been in his fair share of lopsided games, and does fall under the fairly stereotypical "bottom 6 grinder forward who puts up points" category. Even in his time in the SMJHL, Leon was often used as a garbage collector where he'd just play physically in front of the net and see what net battles he could win. In the SHL, he's slowly grown into being a more physical two-way forward. However, he still has never fought anyone in either the SMJHL or the SHL. I don't think he has any fights in the IIHF games either. However I think he'd drop the gloves if anyone cared enough to fight him. I just don't think anyone has looked at Leon and thought of fighting the guy who just shows up to cash a paycheck.

RE: S68 PT #1: Knuckle Sandwich - Gordon Bombay - 11-27-2022

I hate fighting in hockey. When I was younger I use to find it cool, but now I despise it. It's dangerous and it's completely unrelated to the main game. I think that's a really good thing that it's uncommon these days. I really wish we could ban it from the sport. Assault should not be legalised when we are playing. Some people argue that it reduces the number of dirty hits because the player has to be accountable, but I do not agree. It only continues a circle of violence that has no place in sports. The sport of hockey is beautiful and I don't think that having a boxing match in the middle of a game makes it more entertaining.  If I was the one making the rule, I would make it so that player that fought is out of the game and suspended 3 games. Too many players have been hurt and concussed following dumb fights.

Hockey Prompt

Growing up I did not get to watch the pure fighter hockey era, as I was born in 1994 and the position was transition to more of a hybrid position of an enforcer, someone who will lay a big or questionable hit and maybe fight 5 to 10 times a year. Now in 2022 you very rarely see the position or type of player utilized because of the speed of the game. However, there are definitely still some questionable players out there who are making questionable hits. And I think that is where the problem or the question falls. How do you handle these players, do you pay a guy to play 5 to 7 minutes who might be liability when he is on the ice - but in the hope he is there to stop something bad for happening?

Personally I think the era is dead, and fighting will be more of an emotional event. I do enjoy seeing a good fight every now and then though.

From what I understand, the trend away from fights is not a good thing. Fights are outlets and tools to hold dirty players accountable. With that tool restricted, well, your only recourse for a cheap hit is to hit their guy harder. Take out retribution on their winger for doing your winger wrong rather than drop the gloves and take it up with the one who hit your winger in the first place. More severe injuries on players who are only guilty by association.

The right circumstances for a fight are either holding a player accountable for bad behavior. Someone who gives your goalie a snow shower just because they can. If you think a fight will boost your team's morale or crush the opponents', you bear the risk.

Or if you just wanna fight for the hell of it or to put on a show or to make up for lost time, go for it. Again, you bear the risk. I would think the only unacceptable reasons would fall along the lines of "salt" or for personal vendettas that it won't help anyone to try to settle. I don't know a ton on it, since I didn't play or grow up steeped in hockey culture.

Patches was skating back to the net as he was slashed by old team mate Billy blazes who was driving hard to the net as I turn around and slash him back it was a verbal prompt “drop em” that caught my attention right away as I threw my gloves to the ice and grab his jersey it was a strong right paw from me as I seen him wobble i kept the pressure on him and he lost balance and went to the ice, my first and was an easy win against my new rival, as were both in our rookie seasons there should be many more fights to be had on the future as long as my managers won’t bench me. I may try and hide from the real enforcers and just go for rookies until I can get some experience but once I get it anyone will get fought I’ll take you’re name and leave u on the ice after.
