Losing 3 of our top defenders in one year doesn't mean we're entering a rebuild.
I'm the best defenseman on the team, that's why the league decided to put me at defense when we didn't want me there, so we'll be fine, hell, they can put Joe at Goalie next year(both have 3 letters, yo). We'll be totes fine.
Hamilton doesn't rebuild, we deny all rebuilding years as having happened.

I agree with the overpayment thing, would make more sense for WKP to keep #5 and continue to build through the draft.
But Cant regressing isn't really an issue. He'll remain a top defenseman for several more years. This just feels like WKP trying to keep pace with the rest and keep them in the playoffs.
