- adamantium - 06-05-2018 Who doesn't love the Canadian Maritimes? There's a good number of Canadian franchises in the SHL but none in the majors that resides in the Maritimes (Sorry Raiders, you're still a junior team). Thus forth, allow me to introduce the St. John's Sea Dogs. I'm using that pretty colour scheme of Nashville Blue and Yellow, with our mascot being the fierce Faergus the Fisherman, the bravest captain to ever sail the seven seas. Our logo would be an angry fisherman staring intently forward, usually at the opposing team. An alt logo could be the wheel at the helm of a ship. Why St. John's? Well, I personally just love the city and the Canadian Maritimes in general. Plus, Newfoundland needs some hockey love in a major way and what better than to start an SHL franchise in one of the most storied cities in the East? Thus forth, I give you the St. John's Sea Dogs. - kobel9 - 06-05-2018 If I were to take charge of an expansion team... I'd put it smack dab in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Pittsburgh has a rich hockey history with the likes of Sidney Crosby, Mario Lemiux, Evengi Malkin. I feel the SHL is would be open with open arms in the steel city. For a name? The Pittsburgh Pioneers. Why? Pittsburgh Pirates, Pittsburgh Penguins... I'm just keeping the PP alive. Also, stick with the Black and Yellow theme so that we can play Wiz Khalifa songs at our home games. Our Mascot would be a Pioneer all decked out in the black and gold and all the fans will love him. Pittsburgh is a sports city. People in Pittsburgh love sports and I'm sure they will spend their hard-earned money on yet another franchise to help them add to the rich sports history in that town. With a team in Buffalo, it could create a nice little rivalry, adding too the Buffalo/Toronto rivalry. Pittsburgh just seems right, and that's exactly where I'd go. - NorwegianDemon - 06-05-2018 I think the SHL should really consider an expansion team in the metropolis Canadian area that is Wood Buffalo. I think the team branding should be based around something that relates to forest. The team would be called something like the Timbers or the Timberlands. Their logo would be a tree will a lot of leaf’s and a small trunk. The color of the logo would obviously be brown and green. The home jersey primary color would also be brown, but a brown that is darker than the one use for the tree. The secondary color would be black. The away jersey would be mostly white with some black on the halfway point of the sleeves where the sleeve numbers would be. The alternate jersey would have a dark green as a primary color with some black at the same position of the other two jerseys. To please the kids, the team would also have a mascot. This mascot would be quite simple and be a simple tree trunk with no leaf on it. Code: 174 words - thedangazone - 06-05-2018 For my expansion team I would make the New Orleans Bull Sharks. I chose New Orleans because it is one of the most populous cities in the South East United States and the entire region is woefully underutilized in hockey and especially the SHL. I feel like New Orleans is a good, fun loving city that loves its teams and would definitely support any team in the city. Not to mention that Mardi Gras runs right during hockey season so it would be one hell of a party that night if there's a home game. The branding of the Bull Sharks makes sense if you've ever been fishing on the Gulf of Mexico or even spent an entire day around it. There are lots of sharks and the most populous and aggressive kind are bull sharks. Bull Sharks should strike fear into anyone as they're responsible for many attacks on humans plus they can swim into fresh water. In fact many are found up the Mississippi river next to the state. Traditionally I would have wanted to go with some form of gator as that is what the state is known for but there is already a semi-professional hockey team using the Ice Gators as it's name and I felt mine would be a blatant rip off if I went that route. The jerseys of course would be a mix of four colors: red, white, blue, and yellow. These are the colors of the city flag. I would also put fleur-de-lis' around the bottom of the jersey much like the Nordiques did in Quebec City for the NHL in the past. - Confusion - 06-05-2018 ![]() white alternate ![]() - Steelhead77 - 06-05-2018 ![]() Terrace, BC. Steelheads - Chris-McZehrl - 06-05-2018 ![]() - iamslm22 - 06-05-2018 The idea that iamslm22 would get an expansion franchise and be allowed to design one is pretty surprising. He has one league job in SHL (updating the draft pick in SMJHL), and he's not even great at that. So since this is imaginary his SHL hockey is clearly going to be imaginary. My first thought is that if I'm going to create a team in an imaginary place I gotta go with middle earth. I feel like Rivendell would be great, but no elves like the cold. Dwarves are far too small to be good at hockey, and hobbits would be terrible. So lets go to the humans, and I'll create it right in the heart of Rohan. The Rohan Riders would be an awesome brand for this hockey team. Some bad ass horses and dudes with spears and bows and arrows. Rumor has it we already have Faramir and Eowyn on board to help GM the first ever hockey team in Rohan. - Brandon - 06-05-2018 A gold rush themed team in Las Vegas, the Rush: ![]() - Insayne - 06-05-2018 Written Task: Write about the expansion team you've decided to create! Where are you putting it and why, and what is the team branding/concept? What's the mascot? Must be at least 150 words and include team name and location. The Nashville Rockstars would be a hell of a time. Honestly, there needs to be more "southern" teams in the SHL in my honest opinion and I think this would be a fantastic add to really any league. Nashville is a city steeped in musical tradition and it's an absolute blast. I've been there a few times and man is it fun. The branding is fairly simple. Yellow is going to be the main color and the secondary would likely be a dark gray/granite color scheme. The logo would be a very abstract looking rockstar strumming a guitar. It would take a lot of time and effort to make this logo perfect without it looking stupid but when its done, it'll be tops in the league. The mascot is going to be an Elvis Impersonator, actually many Elvis impersonators spread across the arena. I mean, what's better than that? Good, clean, family fun for everyone. - dankoa - 06-05-2018 I propose that the SHL welcome the Wisconsin Warriors to its ranks. The Wisconsin market is one that has been tapped to great success in the NFL but other sports have foolishly ignored in many ways. The SHL has chosen some interesting destinations for expansion, so why not go all out for Wisconsin. They could bring some variety into the league, being close to the Detroit market and there is the potential to sell a package deal of vacation trips in the woodlands alongside game tickets, a money making opportunity that simply cannot be ignored. The team would play in a smaller market than an obvious choice like Milwaukee or Madison, so I think Kenocha would be a great choice to host this new franchise. This bold and brave expansion of the SHL is something that the league has been crying out for, and would inject some much needed excitement into the system. The Savannah Softies ![]() - kckolbe - 06-05-2018 Well, if I am being placed in charge of an expansion team, it is going to suck. Let’s get that out of the way now. First off, expansion teams are supposed to suck, at least for a little while, but can you imagine how much it would suck to be a team at the bottom of a rebuild and see an expansion team outplay you? At any rate, my team would continue to suck, as it would be run by someone with no understanding of hockey. For that reason, I would probably choose a location not exactly famous for hockey, like maybe Mexico City. The Mexico City Maulers has a nice ring to it, and since a lot of my players would likely be goons cast off by their teams tired of their 4th line playing 30% due to upper line penalties, I think the name would actually be kind of accurate. The mascot would be a giant maul, hitting the fans with reckless abandon. - Jenny - 06-05-2018 ![]() - ml002 - 06-05-2018 The fact that Chicago, the fourth largest city in North America, isn't represented is a travesty, on top of it's rich history with the sport of hockey I can't think of a better market to expand into, especially when you look at the lack of representation of the Midwest in the SHL. The Windy City has only ever been repped briefly in the SMJHL as the Chicago Hitmen, aka absolutely garbage branding, and hasn't been seen since. So location chosen, on to the branding, which there is a plethora to choose from. You could go with the historic Chicago fire and name them the Chicago Blaze, cause getting sued by the MLS ain't worth the trouble. Personally I'd choose the Chicago Metrostars, and incorporate the Flag of Chicago into the jersey and branding. Another option would be the Chicago Storm, in reference to our awful and bipolar weather we have all year round. All that being said, I'd go with Cleveland and name the team the Cleveland Riverfires, because the city needs another meme team. |
