I think it's just most of us grew up playing Gen 1 back in the first gameBoy colors and that's when we were young enough to just play it with no other worries in the world.
I loved Gold too however. Catching Ho-Oh was fun as fuck. I remember how many times I'd have to turn off my gameBoy and restart it
Just never had time to play any of the ones after Gen 2. But watching the show and playing the games it was always gen 1 for me. I think that's why we have such a hard on for it, as Maxy said.. Nostalgia
Edit: also I feel like Gen 1 was the only gen for so long that we actually grew really attached to each Pokemon.. Seems like there's a new gen every year now

I grew up with the franchise as well, started with Blue/Yellow and that's what got me to fall in love with the franchise. I have been with it through the highs of Emerald and the lows of Diamond and Pearl. To claim that the Gen 1/2 designs are far and beyond those from 3-6 though isn't right. Gen one has a god damn blob, some sludge, and a ball with eyes. Yet the trash bag Pokémon is the absolute worst? Bah. All the gens have some weak designs, but they also have fantastic designs through as well!
