a. Winnipeg has put together an impressive streak of Challenge Cup Finals appearances, but has no hardware to show for their dominance in the west so far. What do the Aurora have to do differently to get over the hump this year?

WIN has got it this season.  They have had a few challenges bringing it home in the past, but I think that the odds are in their favor.  Between LEG just crushing everyone out there and just playing the odds a bit, I think that BUF will put up a fight but will not be able to stop them.

While I am all for the underdog and really saw something similar last season with NEW, I do not think that BUF is going to be able to pull it off.  WIN is definitely beatable, but the head of steam they are coming into the finals with will propel them over the finish line this time around.  HUGE credit to BUF on the rebuild though.

To say Winnipeg has been offensively dominant in their playoff run so far is needlessly charitable to their opponents. Lias Ekholm-Gunnarsson has *twenty nine points* in sixteen playoff games. Mikko Rashford has *twenty seven*. However, Rebecca Montaigne has a 0.888 save percentage for this run. Can Winnipeg's absurd offense finally get them over the hump, or do they need to patch up their defense if they want to outlast the Upstate Upstarts?

So LEG is pretty much a badass.  You do not have to say a lot more than that when explaining Lias's career.  As someone in their draft class I have followed Lias's career from the beginning and their earning and performance has been off the charts.  Now that being said, we did manage to upset WIN last season in the cup finals (GO NEW!) but I am not sure the same can be said with BUF this year.  As you mention below, BUF has not really had to put up a lot of points to win games and WIN is just throwing tons of pucks to the back of the net.  While I do not think it will end in a sweep, I do thing that WIN will come home with the trophy this year and finally get to celebrate those awesome seasons correctly.  I will put 10 bucks on WIN taking it in 6 games.

a. Winnipeg has put together an impressive streak of Challenge Cup Finals appearances, but has no hardware to show for their dominance in the west so far. What do the Aurora have to do differently to get over the hump this year?
b. Buffalo, fresh off a rebuild, crushed their way through the first two rounds of these playoffs after coming in as a wildcard, scoring two consecutive sweeps against two of the best teams in the East. Have the Stampede convinced you? If so, what sold you?
c. Two very different teams took two very different routes to the Cup Final: which of them impressed you more? Why?
d. If it ain't broke don't fix it: Who you got? Who wins? Why?

A.) The Winnipeg Aurora have been stiffled by their opponents 3 seasons in a row, this reminds me very much of years ago when I was a part of the Los Angeles Panthers. Winnipeg doesn't need to do anything different, they have an unbelievable roster and it's only a matter of time before everything clicks and they bring home the Challenge Cup. I wouldn't be surprised at all if next season is the season that everything finally works in the teams favor.

B.) The Buffalo Stampede got hot at the right time this season and the results speak for themselves. This is a team that everyone in the Eastern Conference is going to have to worry about for years to come. The Stampede have  great management so I can't say that I'm surprised. I would expect the Stampede to be one of the biggest threats to win the Challenge Cup for the foreseeable future.

C.) I think that what the Buffalo Stampede did this season has to be viewed as the more impressive feat. Not only did the team win it all, they weren't viewed as one of the favorites heading into the season and some might say that they snuck into the playoffs as a wild card. However, the Stampede was on when the games started to matter and the group from Buffalo proved to be unstoppable.

D.) Using my magic eight ball, I'm 100% certain that the Buffalo Stampede will win the Challenge Cup. I can neither confirm nor deny that I'm a time traveler, but trust me, take all of your life savings and put it on the Buffalo Stampede. Maybe it's because of all of the talent that the Stampede have on their roster, maybe it's the Aurora's horrible luck. Either way, the Stampede will be champions, take it to the bank.

Task #5 - Blood on the Ice - (+3TPE)
5. Written, 3 TPE, Blood on the Ice (150 words min)
Continuing an emergent tradition: this year's final features a god-bear of cosmic wind facing an unfamiliar rival on a familiar battleground: this year, the great glowing north faces a furious herd of buffalo! Tell me who wins and why! The arena and the rules of the fight can be whatever you desire. Get creative!

This one is easy, the Cosmic power of the north is wayy to powerfull for a heard of Buffalo. While the Buffalo may be strong as a unit, the Aurora can dance between them effortlessly and the almost supernatural element of their amazing display will leave the Stampede of Buffalo confused and unsure on what they could possibly do to attack the Great power of mother north. Legend has it that the northern lights are the souls of the former SHL players who has since moved on from the league. The souls of the players who never recreated are the most powerful and are said to be the portion of the Aurora that shines the brightest. The mystic power of the Aurora will throw the heard of Buffalo into great confusion causing the Stampede to break up and move in all different directions.
This battle will take place in an arena so vast that the flat earth theory will be proven to be false.

Task #10 - (+3 TPE) - IIHF Analysis
10. Written, 3 TPE, IIHF Analysis (150 words min.)
Write your predictions for this year's IIHF tournament or WJC! Tell me about your team! How far do you realistically expect to go this year? What nations do you want to match up against, and which do you dread?

Heading into what will be his second straight and third ever IIHF tournament,  Alexi Piastri is very confident about how things should shake out and Japan's chances at having a successful tournament. Japan has an excellent team led by superstar players such as Evil AllBran and BASE PACK.  AllBran is one of the most electric offensive players in the SHL and can make anyone that plays alongside of him a more effective player. BASE PACK has established himself as one of the best goaltenders in the entire SHL. With a goaltender like BP in net, Japan is capable of winning games simply from excellent play from their goaltending. Piastri only registered 5 points in last seasons tournament,  but he has scored at over a point per game in his first two SHL seasons and hopes to play a more important role for Japan in this season's tournament.  As a team, a medal would have to be considered a solid result, but Alexi and every player in the locker room hopes to bring home gold. There's a number of excellent teams to watch out for. Japan will need to be 100% on top of their games when facing off against the likes of Canada, USA, and Sweden.

Task #11 - (+3 TPE) - Civil War
11. Written, 3 TPE, Civil War (150 words min.)
How does your player feel about playing against SHL teammates in the IIHF? Do you ease up on your hits, or do you go harder? Do you grin at each other across the ice, or is this a point of national pride?

Alexi Piastri is excited to play against some of his fellow Minnesota Monarchs during the upcoming IIHF tournament. The Monarchs are a very young team, so there will be plenty of future matchups between teammates in international play. Piastri's teammate Hai Nam Hoàng is also a part of team Japan and the pair could develop great chemistry not only during international play, but with the Monarchs in SHL as well. Alexi cares a lot about winning, so don't expect him to take it easy when battling for pucks in the corner with an SHL teammate during IIHF play, when one of his Monarch teammates is carrying the puck, they better account for where Piastri is on the ice because he won't play them any differently than he would anybody else. Sure, Alexi will talk with his SHL teammates in between whistles, he may even go have a pre-game meal with them or share an uber back to the hotel, but he would expect any of his teammates to play at 100% intensity againt him and that's certainly the minimum effort that he will be putting in during IIHF play.

That's indeed an interesting challenge. The magical, cosmic god-bear wins of course. I don't know why it has to face a whole herd and not just one buffalo - after all on their logo there's only one, so I'll go with that, you won't change my mind. Sure, the buffalo might be furious, but it's going on against a god-bear with cosmic wind. Even on a linguistic level that description already wins the battle and we don't even need to continue here. The aurora simply confuses the buffalo and it might run into the wrong direction and get lost or something (assuming there's indeed multiple buffalos around, they would do the same, but it's a lot more dangerous if they're all aimlessly running around not knowing who or where they are anymore - we might even get to the 'blood on the ice' part here if we're not careful) - anyway the god-bear simply wins by being itself and having some sparkling, shiny magic aur(or)a around itself. Do I really need to go on with this or is this enough?

I don't know how I should feel, because I typically don't even think about this much. There are usually more teammates on other teams than on my team so it's normal. Tt was the same with my old player. As a goalie I don't typically hit people, but when we're playing WJC or IIHF games I play for my team and the other people are on the 'other' team. They're the opponents. We can be friends off the ice, but on the ice I always want to win and that means stopping people from scoring on me, no matter who it is. You don't have to go as far and say you hate the other team or the other players, that's a bit far, but you compete against each other and you want to win. I'm sure most people think this way. It's the same when you get traded and suddenly have to play against your old team. You play for the new team then and you want to win, even if you might still be friends with your old teammates.

A. I think the answer is pretty straight forward. They need to win more games than they lose. Every time they make it to the finals they lose more games than they win. This is a disastrous strategy and will never get the job done. If they follow my recipe for success then they will be walking away champions this season.

B. I am so proud of Buffalo. They did the whole process right and rebuilt their team in a traditional way and are now seeing the rewards for their hard work. I think they have a real shot at winning the trophy especially seeing as how Winnipeg is cursed but they definitely shouldn’t sleep on their competition and need to keep their foot on the pedal to get this done.

3. Winnipegs offense is insane. I am actually a firm believer that offense can win you championships if you have enough of it. If you’re lacking even a little bit then it won’t be enough to overcome an average Defense or goaltending. I am a little hesitant to give Winnepeg enough credit to say their offense will get it done. They have two guys who are popping off but I think you need to have 4 or 5 carrying the offensive load. Winnipeg is going to be in it tough. You need to have timely goaltending and if Montaigne can’t steal them a win or two then they’re going to be dooooomed. Where have the Defense been though? It’s gotta be a full team effort to take home a championship. Even if it’s just doing the little things, blocking shoots and playing a solid defensive game then points from the back end aren’t needed. Time will tell if Winnipeg has found the right formula.

I think this is the season where the Winnipeg Aurora finally get over the hump and win in the championship finals.  Historically they have had good goaltending and defense even though Montaigne has had a less than stellar playoff run so far.  But now that has all changed as the team seems to have gone all in on their offensive attack and it is showing with the point totals for their skating leaders.  I think this new emphasis on scoring goals rather than purely keeping them out of their own net is going to be a good one for the Aurora and they will end their streak of heartbreaks in the finals.  If I were them I would put an even less emphasis on defense in the finals to throw off the Stampede, they will never expect the pure run and gun style and then they can overcome the crazy Fantobens streak from this playoffs. Nothing but offense let's see how that turns out!

a. I already touched on this above but I thin the Aurora have to just go all in on their crazy offensive output and just try to overwhelm the Stampede with their pure goal scoring and not worry too much about playing a defensiveminded game. The best defense is a good offense and Winnipeg needs to embrace that to win.

d. I think this is the season that the Winnipeg Aurora finally get over the hump and capture their Challenge Cup win after seasons of heartbreak in the finals. I think they are due for some luck in the simulation and will be able to get carried by their crazy goal scoring so I tihnk they are going to walk away the winners of this SHL season.

c. Two very different teams took two very different routes to the Cup Final: which of them impressed you more? Why?
a. For Winnipeg the biggest key is making sure they don't slip up on home ice. In S69, two OT losses at MTSC did them in against a white-hot Forge, while last season they won 3 of their 4 home games....except the loss was in Game 7. And if you slip up at home, you better make up for it with a road W.

b. With Buffalo, I actually didn't need to be convinced - they were the fifth-best team in the league in the regular season, but just so happened to play in a difficult division with two other powers. It's not a conventional Cinderella run - do not be fooled by their seed, or you will face the same fate as New England, Montreal, or Philly.

c. It's gotta be Buffalo and it's not close. Winnipeg got a run for their money from Chicago, and the Edmonton series was closer than the 4-1 scoreline indicated, but they were the best team in the regular season - they SHOULD be here. Buffalo, on the other hand, swept the top two teams in their conference, then survived a 7 game war against the third.

As far as I'm concerned, if you're wearing a different jersey to me on the day, you are the enemy. Regardless of how often we play together or any personal relationships. International sport, international hockey, should not be treated with kid gloves as a fun goofy exhibition - this is just as competitive, if not even more competitive, as any league match. Do you see guys in the FIFA World Cup ease up on tackles or skill moves because the guy in front of him plays for the same club? Of course you don't, because you know they're there to compete and to win for their national team. When I (IRL) was a competitive speed skater I'd face off at meets against people from my club and I raced them just as hard as I raced some bozo from Bay State. If I'm carrying the puck and I have the chance to pop Justin Time's water bottle with a snap shot I'm going to do it.
