What young players in the SHL should you draft and stash? here we target those players who will one day turn into draft day stars.In my opinion, the best players to draft and stash for the future are the big 4 from the S46 draft class for the New England Wolfpack - @gordieboom, @"Flareon4043", @5ympathies, and of course yours truly. I believe there won't be much of a focus on these young players at the moment because New England is deep into a rebuild, but they will be leading the charge once the rebuild is over - having so many soon-to-be legendary players hit their primes at the same time will mean a boatload of fantasy points for everyone who manages to snatch up these young studs. Because NEW's currently in the shitter, it's likely that the drafter will be able to pick up these players cheaply; however, as long as they have faith in the New England system, these picks will definitely prove their value when the meteoric rise of the Wolfpack begins in the next few seasons.

Bold SHL predictions:
This article discusses some of our boldest predictions about the upcoming S48 season.This is considered a bit bold by me given how many great teams are out west, but I believe that the San Francisco Pride will make the playoffs comfortably. This will be the season their goaltender, Chris Partridge, finally puts it together and takes that next step of an elite goaltender. He has a tremendous defense in front of him and the group up with Lombardi may prove fruitful. I also believe that Toronto will miss the playoffs this season, or at least be a non contender. McFadden has become far worse and truth be told, he is just barely above the level of a top SMJHL goaltender. Their prospect in Carpet will be ready next season but the Northstars probably don't mind a little tanking. Edmonton may just fall this season, after being a definite threat the past few seasons. They didn't add anyone top tier and seem to be content just letting their younger home grown players improve. A mistake? Possibly but I have my doubts that they will be able to endure this brutal west.

Here we offer our take on who to target for your Hits and Blocks during your draft.If you are looking for hits and blocks, look no further than the Winnipeg Jets. In the S48 preseason, the Jets combined for the second most hits (1018 compared to 1032 in Calgary) and the third most blocks (506 compared to 509 in New England and 514 in Toronto). When comparing the aggregate, Winnipeg handily beats the competition; Calgary is about 50 behind in blocks, while New England and Toronto are about 40 and 110 behind in hits respectively.
Of the combined 1524 hits and blocks, 652 come from just three skaters. When talking fantasy draft, the first two names are staples on any team, but the third may surprise you.
With 213 hits and 11 blocked shots, Lil Manius is third in the league for hits this preseason while also putting up an astounding 57 points. @Bonk
With 134 hits and 87 blocked shots, Gary Grease is the physical element on the top defensive pair in Winnipeg while also putting up 47 points. @FlappyGiraffe
Lastly, with 136 hits and 71 blocked shots, Slip McScruff rounds out the top 4 defensemen for the Jets. If you noticed the pattern, you might have guessed that Slip put up 37 points behind those two.
So, if you are looking to draft for hits and blocks, start with Lil Manius or Gary Grease but in a pinch late in the draft, keep an eye on Slip McScruff.

Borromini Cannellini @ArGarBarGar : Cannelini has good odds on him for the Jesster this season, and is the centerpiece of LAP's rebuild, although they have other strong prospects in the pipeline. He leads the S46 class in tpe, and is a dangerous forward, proven at the junior level. If he makes the transition well, he will be a threat for years to come
Jimmy Slothface @slothfacekilla : This British forward is dangerous in more ways than one, and in my opinion is a future star for sure. He's proven his ability to compete at the SMJHL level but also has shown a hunger for victory as part of the UK's gold medal winning IIHF team (as well as the bronze-winning WJC team)
Dominic Montgomery @bilbo : A call-up to SFP's strong looking team this season, Montgomery promises to terrorise the west. With SFP looking to improve on last season considerably and return to the playoffs, we'll see if Montgomery is the piece they need to do it.

The SHL Hockey guide looks ahead at some of the surprise entries and strong contenders of next seasons Award nominationsIn this piece I will look at 3 players I think will be in the running for the ROTY for S48.
1. Los Angeles Panthers - Borromini Cannellini(@ArGarBarGar )
Cannellini has been the pick of many predictions for the Rookie of the Year Award going into S48. The former Whaler makes the jump this season to LA's second line and had an impressive preseason netting 29 points. Cannellini is no stranger to being seen as a generational performer, as they were the recipient of many SMJHL awards. The one hurdle in their race for ROTY could be fellow LAP rookie Hiro Fujikawa who is currently set to start on the first line. With two high performing rookies, both could take away points that the other needs to climb the leaderboards.
2. Tampa Bay Barracuda - Matt Kholin(@Kalakar )
Kholin was the standout rookie of the preseason; leading all rookie scoring with 41 points. The next highest rookie had 32 points in the preseason. Kholin has made the transition from the minors to the Barracuda's first line as a center and seems poised for a productive season. The biggest hurdle I see for Kholin in the race is how well the Barracuda perform around him. One player cannot carry an entire team and the best shot to get the ROTY Award is to have great teammates setting you up for success. I think Kholin's chances depend heavily on how TBB comes out in the standings.
3. Minnesota Chiefs - Collin Gibbles(Me)
Gibbles makes the jump after a tremendous campaign to win the Four Star Cup with the Anaheim Outlaws and a Silver medal with Team USA in the WJC. Gibbles has likely flown under the radar of many until their call-up to the major league this offseason and has seen quite a few predictions favoring them for ROTY. Gibbles is looking to slot into Minnesota's second line and put up 29 points in the preseason(Tied for 4th in rookie scoring). Gibble's pass first game that had shifted to goal scoring in the minors has resurfaced and time on the Chief's power play will likely add to their assist column. The biggest hurdle I see in Gibbles chances at ROTY is the same as Kholin. The Chiefs were hit with a few key losses after last season and are in full rebuild mode. The preseason looked bright for them and if they can keep up their high level play; Gibbles might find themselves in the spot for a ROTY nomination.

While it certainly isn't the most coveted award by any standard, the Top Rookie award is a strong indicator each of season of the next up and coming superstars line of progression towards the top of the charts. Every season we are introduced to the next greatest player as there is a seemingly endless host of talented youngsters pushing to be the front runner in their respective rookie class. This season is no different as a number of impressive figureheads battle for the top position in what is going to be an extremely interesting year to watch. Here are some of the highlight rookies this season.
Matt Kholin -
- @KalakarThis is the beginning of something great for Tampa Bay as rookie center Matt Kholin hits the ice for the first time this season. One of the most hyped players in his class, Kholin is an exceptional rookie who will find first line minutes and anchor himself as the top center for years to come on the Barracuda roster. Kholin was selected 14th overall by the Barracuda back in S46 and has quickly made the jump up to the SHL in order to get a jump start on his career. With an exceptional pre-season, things are looking good for the Tampa Bay rookie.
Akashi SixNine -
- @FourFourSixNine continues this year's draft class for the Barracuda, coming in to join the team on the second defensive pairing this pre-season and leaving and impression that he's going to be a dominant threat after finishing second in rookie scoring during the pre-season campaign. SixNine is an excellent puck moving defender who possesses stellar defensive fortitude whilst not shying away from offensive stardom. A dynamic two way player like this is hard to come by at the blue-line, meaning SixNine is a lock for a top position for years to come and a safe bet for any keeper fantasy league.

Tough Guys and Enforcers:
Here we breakdown the hard hitters and league tough guys to target on draft day.
More than ever, this looks to be the year of the physical forward. Three of the top five overall point scorers during the preseason - Mike Izzy, Lil Manius, and Cameron Carter II - were also among the top 5 players in hits. Combining all of that together with their high rates of shooting as well means that those three should be among the top fantasy selections this season while likely competing for some awards as well. The only concern is that with the amount of penalty minutes some of these guys are racking up, they could end up missing enough time on the ice that it impacts the final numbers. Izzy and Manius in particular seem to be troublemakers and willing to get into some fights. Sophia Bennett stands out as a heavy hitter, solid scorer, and more disciplined player who is just slightly behind the first 3 in hits and points. On the defensive side of things, we have a clear leader in Mr. Otis B. Driftwood, and then it seems to be anyone's game behind him. Gary Grease impresses with his overall game, scoring points and delivering hits while staying out of the penalty box, while Tigole Bitties is a true bruiser for the Wolfpack.

Bold Predictions- Jason Visser will set a single season point record. I’m not exactly sure which, but Jason Visser looks as dominant as ever in Winnipeg, and something about his preseason plays looks like it will translate to regular season glory.
- Chris Partridge will win the John McBride trophy as the SHL’s best goalie. Expectations were high last season, and despite a rather rough start Partridge still finished the season strong. It was the first time he felt like there were even expectations around the roster, and said nerves got the better of him on many nights early on in the season. With a ton of experience under his belt now, the young goalie looks poised to ascend to the top of the SHL ranks.
- No defenseman will reach the 50 point mark this season. With so many talented defenseman in the league right now it’s hard to imagine this coming true, but based on preseason play it looks like the defense may be spreading the point share around a bit this season.

- This recently drafted right wing on the St Louis Scarecrows managed to put up 1st line points with 2nd line minutes. He was top 6 in points in the preseason and one can only expect him to perform even better as the season rolls along.Mika Kandinsky
- Mika is the top line centerman on the St Louis Scarecrows and he puts up tons of assists. He puts up good hits numbers and has a good shot. However, he did manage to put up the highest penalty minutes on the team so that would be something to look out for.Lyle Odelein III
- This D man is second on his team in defensive scoring. Plus he has managed to put up a cool +14 on the plus/minus board. Look for this player to get tons of shot blocks and time on the ice.

- 228Marius is a S39 player meaning they should be at the height of their career. With one more season before regression it's no wonder that this hard hitting player is topping the charts for hits.
2. Mike Izzy
- 223When you think of hits you think of Mike Izzy, no doubt. Izzy has been one of the most high impact players in the SHL for several seasons now and I don't see that changing any time soon.
3. Lil Manius
- 213This may come as a surprise to some but Lil Manius is a great player to take when you're looking for hits. Standing at 5'6" and 182 lbs he's been lighting people up this preseason and I can't imagine he'll let up.
For shot blocks of course you want to look at defense, and these are my top 3.
1. Fredrich Koenig
- 892. Gary Grease
- 873. Rex Kirkby
- 85Generally I think you want to look for a more defensive defenseman who plays a lot of minutes, but these three break the mold and end up being generally very good offensively as well.

The SHL Hockey guide takes a look at some of the best and worst face off specialists in the game as well as those go to guys, sleeper picks and late round bargains when it comes to the men working towards maintaining the puck.Maintaining puck posession is the name of the game, and you want to pick fantasy players that are going to give their team the best chance at maintaining the puck. Grabbing a face-off specialist who can also put the puck in the net is an integral way to ensure you are going to be getting more stats and more points.
The Best:
Robert Phelps @DrunkenTeddy
- Robert Phelps is at the top of the face-off% board for the pre-season. He has a FO% of 58.10% while also scoring 50 points. Grab this top line center and don't look back!Mikhail Lokitonov @ml002
- Lokitonov is a bonafide star in the SHL. He is in second in FO% in pre-season with 57.47% in the dot. He also scored 53 points in the pre season. If you aren't grabbing Lokitonov early in your draft, do you even want to win?Dermot Lavelle @White Cornerback

Gordie Boomhover @gordieboom
- Gordie is a fantastic player and also a rookie this season which plays into this more than anything, but his FO% could use some work. At 42.79% Boomhover isn't quite ready to be a master in the dot. He has a FO% of 43.78% and scored 23 points in pre-season. He'll look to improve those numbers in the regular season and expect him to grow as he continues his young career.

Perhaps not a prediction many would think, however here is my bold prediction: The Calgary Dragons will miss the playoffs. Crazy, right?
I think Calgary's team is very good and the track record from the team and GM Esa ( @Steelhead77 ) is nothing to scoff at, however they struggled in the pre-season. In a Western conference which seems is going to be much more competitive than many thought, the Dragons, reigning Challenge Cup Finalists, will falter under the pressure. We know Mike Izzy ( @
I can easily be wrong here, but I'm looking at the pre-season standings and I'm thinking this could very well be a possibility. Most people are writing off the Chiefs and Panthers from the West altogether, but their performance in the preseason was above expectations and could pose some problems to teams. There you have it, my bold prediction: The Calgary Dragons will miss the S48 playoffs.

After the Hype report:
Every player develops at different rates after arriving in the league, and some require a bit more seasoning than others. create a report on players you believe are now past their hype peaks but still shouldn’t be forgotten on draft day.
Let's be real, no one expected Ben Dover (@"ThatDamnMcJesus") to still be kicking around the league this long after he was drafted. The veteran defenseman has played his entire career with the Hamilton Steelhawks and appears to not be leaving anytime soon. A strong, puck moving defenseman, Dover was the top scoring defenseman on the Steelhawks with 37 points (7 goals, 30 assists), and played the most minutes out of any defenseman on the team with an average minutes per game of 22:27. While in obvious decline, Dover still brings a ton to the table for the Hamilton Steelhawks' defence core in terms of both leadership and tenacity. On a team with similarly skilled defensemen, and no real outstanding star in the back end, a lot of the work load in both even strength, power play, and penalty killing, have fallen upon Dover. With the Steelhawks looking to make a push for the SHL playoffs, Dover will be called upon once again by the team to help lead his team to the playoffs and potentially the Challenge Cup.
