- Pris - 06-11-2018 I'm a firm proponent of unconventional hockey towns. Consequently, I think it'd be really fucking cool to have hockey in New Orleans, Louisiana. They could call the team the New Orleans Kings, a reference to both the Mardi Gras royalty that come out at the formal end of New Orleans Mardi Gras and the king cake that is traditional of the celebrations as well. Naturally, the colors of the team would be purple, green, and gold, the traditional colors of Mardi Gras. The mascot could be a jester, an image that has become symbolic of the celebrations in New Orleans. In much the same fashion as the Vegas Golden Knights have adopted medieval motifs as part of their branding, the Kings could easily use Carnival imagery in theirs. It would be really cool to see a team concept revolving around both the symbolism of the festival itself as well as the colorful, fun, party aspect of it. Mainly cause I live there, but also to add a desert team to the league and help expand to a new found hockey city. The name of the team would Vegas Gamblers, based off what the city is full of. This would be a unique identity while also being a way the team can be run, which is by gambling on yourself to be as good as you think you will be. The mascot would probably be a pair of die, which would be really fucking creepy but also pretty cool and show how most people here lose there money. The team would play on the Strip, obviously, and would probably have a casino in the stadium as well. The logo probably would also be a dice with something hockey related on it, maybe like the black dots be hockey pucks. - Phobospwns - 06-11-2018 If I were to create a new expansion team for the SHL, I think I'd want to locate it in a town that's big enough to support a sizable team. I'd also want it to be in a town that doesn't already have a competing NHL or even AHL franchise - I'd want to be the only show in town. Off the top of my head, one city in particular comes to mind - Austin, Texas. There's no top level pro teams there of any kind, and the closest hockey team is over in Dallas - so there's plenty of population to support the only show on ice. I'd want the name to be something from the area... but clearly things like Cowboys, Texans and Aztex are already taken- so perhaps the local new world placental mammal would be fitting - the Austin Armadillos. The mascot would clearly be a big ass armadillo with a hockey helmet and a stick - probably covered in leather. The color scheme would be gray and burnt orange. It's an area that's ripe for the hockey picking, with a mascot that connects to the region. It could have real traction! - Dude - 06-11-2018 My expansion team will be based in Paris, Ohio. I believe Paris, Ohio is an excellent location for an expansion team as it doesn't matter how many people live there, this is a fake sim league. My team name will be the Paris Party Poopers. The Party Poopers' mascot is an overweight neck beard that goes around the stadium correcting people's grammar, butting in on political conversation, and stating facts about concussion side effects on hockey players. Our logo is a pile of actual feces with glitter in it to draw a P in the feces. Needless to say the Party Poopers have very few fans. In a bid to gain a following, the president of hockey operations is holding a Free Feces Friday night where attendants get to use the toilets for free. When asked if this would cut into profits he added that "We are still charging for toilet paper". Code: 152 words - Muford - 06-11-2018 Call me a homebody, but if I was to add an expansion team I would clearly add a team to Chicago. They would be something like the Chicago Nightmare, and the logo would be a nightmare, a sleek black horse with a flaming mane. The Mascot of course would also be a black stallion with red eyes. I believe Chicago should have a team because besides being a major city in the Midwest, it is also a major international city and has a huge fan base. People from all over the world would be able to stop in Chicago and see the Nightmare play, or from all across the country. Chicago, even though it has one of the higher tax rates in the country, is an amazing place for a team to be located and would generate a lot of revenue and interest from potential part owners because it would be a huge money grab. (155 words) - Gilmore Tuttle - 06-11-2018 I would add a team in McMurdo Station, Antarctica and they would be called the Chill, or the Freeze. The mascot would definitely be a giant ice cube, or a giant penguin. I picked this because you never have to worry about having the ice melt in the summer because it’s always COLD! (The warm season lasts for 2.5 months, from November 22 to February 7, with an average daily high temperature above 24°F. The hottest day of the year is January 5, with an average high of 33°F and low of 25°F. The cold season lasts for 5.3 months, from April 18 to September 28, with an average daily high temperature below -1°F. The coldest day of the year is August 11, with an average low of -18°F and high of -9°F.) Yes, the population is low, but no team in their right mind would want to go there, and whatever team does is not conditioned for the weather, so our home ice advantage would be ridiculous. Besides the fact that it is close to every time zone (since all time zones come to a point down there) it branches the league out into another location besides North America. Adding this team would be beneficial to the league because it would also add jet lag to opposing teams, so therefore whoever comes out and goes home has a rougher time in addition to the weather. I wouldn't be surprised if the team would go undefeated at home in any given season. (170 words) - ztevans - 06-11-2018 My expansion team would be a throwback to my days as a GM in sim leagues – sort of. Obviously, I can’t make another Winnipeg Jets team (although the outrage would be AMAZING and totally worth it). However, I can bring back the team that got my foot in the door as a GM working with Simon T. Yes, I dabbled some with the World Juniors one-off put together by Tomen and InciteHysteria. However, my first full-blown experience came alongside GCool on the PHL with the Charlotte Bootleggers. I didn’t have much success there, bless my Bootleggers’ heart, but I GM’d that team for nearly ten seasons and still have lots of fond memories. Given the chance to bring an expansion franchise to the SHL, I’d bring back the Bootleggers, as they have since moved to Boston under adamantium’s helm in the PHL. I’m not sure if I would use the original green and gold branding or the refreshed blue and gold … there is an awful lot of blue in the SHL, and the change was to differentiate myself from all the green in the PHL at the time. However, there’s no doubt I would enjoy bringing SHL hockey to the Tar Heel State. Oh, and I'm obviously bringing back Junior the Moonshiner as the mascot. Duh. - Abdeezy - 06-11-2018 Montreal has been one of the best cities for hockey in the SMJHL for oearly 40 seasons now. There aren’t many clubs that can say, they have had such a die hard fan base than the Montreal Impact turned Montreal Milita. I think its time to reward Montreal, and all of their die hard fans, with a professional team, a big league team, an SHL team! Montreal has had great success in hockey, not only in the SMJHL, but even in the NHL. They have crazy loyal fans, and have a very rich history. Also, there’s a team in Toronto which would create a great rivalry for the SHL. We could keep everything the same about the SMJHL team, and just bring that team up to the SHL as an expansion team. We could then bring a team In the SMJHL, if need be, and give a new city a chance to prove their love for the SHL. For example, we could move the Montreal team to Chicago, to test the waters and see how their fans will react to an SMJHL team. - sarmo - 06-11-2018 My expansion team would be in Houston and their name would be the "Screech Owls", like from the fiction novels and the show. The mascot would be an alien owl who goes by "Screech the owl" and has green feathers and distinctive alien like features. The concept of this team would be spacey since it's Houston and we got NASA and the Houston Rockets who go by the nicknames Clutch City and Space City. The colors of the Houston Screech Owls would be coincidently the same as the retro Rockets basketball jerseys, yellow, red, black and the same design from the Screech Owls Novels. Screech Owl series author would be paid off handsomely for taking his jersey and branding idea but the originality could be seen at the same level as when the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim were introduced into professional level hockey. The team name and look would definitely be a classic for nostalgic old time hockey fans and would attract a big base of vintage audiences. - Winter is Coming - 06-11-2018 My proposed SHL expansion team would be located in New York, because it’s such a large market that it deserves to have more than just one franchise in it. Realistically, any major league would ideally like two teams in the two largest media markets, which are New York and Los Angeles respectively. For the New York expansion team, there are no two things that New York is more known for than pizza and rats. Therefore, I propose that the newest SHL franchise be dubbed as the New York Pizza Rats. The logo would be a giant rat eating at a pizza very aggressively, with the colors of red, black, and orange all being utilized to represent the rat and the pizza respectively. One could even add a tint of color to represent the many different topings that are typically placed on a pizza. The mascot of the Pizza Rats would be Frank the Fat Rat, a naming reference to New York icon and singing legend, Frank Sinatra. This team would encompass the very essence, heart, and overall nature of New York City, and would make for an amazing option for the SHL from a business standpoint, as well. Go Rats Go! Code: 201 words - Bonk - 06-11-2018 As any long time listener of the Big Slappy Hour and any follower of the SHL fantasy keeper leagues can tell you, my expansion team would be the Binghamton Hellbenders. The Hellbenders would be based out of Binghamton based of its old school hockey feel and its hockey history. Nothing would scream hockey more than seeing the Hellbenders playing at the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena. After all the city who’s hockey team served as the inspiration for the movie Slap Shot , needs to represented in the SHL. The team would get its name from the local fauna the hellbender, a salamander that is native to the Susquehanna River, which flows though the city. Not a little salamander but one that can grow to be 29 inches in length (74 cm). The team mascot would have to be “Henrietta-The Hell Raising-Hellbender†and her costume would be a big salamander outfit. The team would have to keep with the hellish theme, and have its color’s be red and black. Words till here~160 The Binghamton Hellbenders logo would look like this. ![]() Henrietta “The Hell Raising†Hellbender in costume ![]() I may have written about the hellbenders before but this is new work. Go look. - Jedi - 06-11-2018 If I had choice on an expansion team, I think I'd take it out of North America. It's an online league so I don't see why we shouldn't get crazy with it, y'know? So, my team is Hockey Club Hokkaido. Also known as The Cranes, they're identified by their black and red cady-cane jerseys and red and white Crane mascot. Their home base is the Makomanai Ice Arena in Hokkaido's capital of Sapporo. I think this would be a pretty cool concept. Taking sim hockey to Asia, move away from the traditional naming conventions that you'd find in North America, y'know dropping the whole PLACE and MASCOT format. That has gotten kind of tired for me, especially as the whole league follows that convention. And they've also got a bit of a crazy sweater aesthetic as well. It's all online stuff so I think we should be a little wilder with stuff in that regard. - Glyc - 06-11-2018 I’ve decided that I’ve got the best possible location for an SHL expansion team and quite frankly I think it should be in Nunavut. It gives a clear advantage in tactics in the way that the rink is outdoors and it’s colder than you’d believe so half of the time you just have to wait for the team to forfeit! Normally I would say a team so far up north would deserve a snow based name but Edmonton ruined that for everyone so welcome everybody to the Nunavut Narwhals. That’s right Narwhals have representation in the world of sports finally and I’m sure the reign will be swift and just. The teams Mascot’s name is Nelly and is a volunteer school bus driver on the weekends, not a narwhal just good ol’ Nelly. All in all the Nunavut Narwhals are going to be a force for years to come and the whole league should beware the air fair and just try forfeiting all their games here. - sytarah - 06-11-2018 ![]() - formx - 06-11-2018 If I were to have my own expansion club, I would put it in Yokohama, Japan because my player is Japanese and also I feel the SHL has too many North American teams so I feel it's right to have some international expansion. The team will be branded as the Yokohama Flügels which was the name of a legendary Japanese football club that was dissolved in 1998 after their owner pulled financial support for the club and merged it with the Nissan owned club the Yokohama Marinos. Many Flugels fans want to see the name return in some form in Japanese sports so I feel it's right to take the name and use it for the hockey club. As for the mascot of the Flugels, Flugel is German for wing or wings and flugel also sounds like Seagull and seagulls have wings so I think a seagull would be a perfect mascot. |
