S47 Redraft - BDonini - 03-20-2020

So out of boredom, and the desperate need to procrastinate my assignments, I decided to write a S47 SHL redraft, the S47 draft was one of the deeper and more exciting non reddit classes in recent memory and I figured it would be fun to go through the picks and see who messed up and who would've gone where in a more ideal draft. I'm gonna keep in mind team needs through all this in order to not try and just make it a TPE ranking, for each pick we'll give the original pick, the redraft pick, a little write up, and we'll grade the original pick. Also note that the TPE being used is the player page TPE as of March 20 so if you have like 80 TPE sitting in an update thread, I'm sorry (but not really though, update more regularly you lazy shit (yes @JNH I'm looking at you)). I'll do the first two rounds, or as far into the second round as I can go until we just have IAs. So here we go..

1. Winnipeg Jets Jets
Original Pick: Jax Duggan, D, 1142 TPE
New Pick: Corey Kennedy, D, 1455 TPE

I don't think there's anything surprising about this one, there's absolutely no world in which Corey Kennedy doesn't go 1st overall in a S47 redraft. He leads the class in TPE, is the league's commissioner, is a junior GM, is all around one of the most active people on the site, is a great LR person and really just everything you can ask for in a first overall pick and franchise defenseman. While the Duggan pick looked good for Winnipeg at the time it went sour pretty quickly for Winnipeg as they lost him to Hamilton as an RFA before he even played a game for them. To be fair to Winnipeg they did get a 1st rounder as compensation which ended up being another 1st overall pick in a reddit draft with which they took Adam Barron, who is one of the TPE leaders in his class right now so maybe they did get their franchise defenseman after all? I guess based on that we can be a little more generous on the grade, though they did still mess up the pick so it won't be a perfect grade.

Original Pick Grade: A-

2. Tampa Bay Barracuda Barracuda
Original Pick: Gunnar Soderberg, RW, 1172 TPE
New Pick: Eko van Otter, LW, 1447 TPE

Ok seriously, I promise this won't just be a TPE ranking but the top 2 earners are just so far ahead that there's really no other justifiable way to rank them. While Soderberg wasn't a terrible pick (trust me Tampa Bay had plenty of those in this one), there still could've been a much better pick in van Otter. Soderberg was probably the most exciting prospect in the draft at the time and Jess was one of the best LR people available so I really don't blame Tampa Bay for going with Soderberg here but unfortunately real life got in the way and while Soderberg is still a key part of Tampa Bay's top six 6 seasons later, van Otter is on pace to be one of the most elite wingers in the league in a couple seasons and would've been a huge boost to Tampa. Overall a decent pick, but definitely could've been a lot better.

Original Pick Grade: B

3. Chicago Syndicate syndicate

Original Pick: Corey Kennedy, D, 1455 TPE
New Pick: Tony Ford, D, 1244 TPE

The Syndicate become the first team to pick a player ahead of where he should've gone, they were lucky to have generational defenseman Corey Kennedy fall into their lap the first time around, he's been an anchor on their blue line since his debut in S49 and has been the Syndicate's captain since S52. This was definitely one of the better picks of the draft, if not the best. Unfortunately they're not so lucky in the redraft and while it was hard to avoid taking one of the really high TPE forwards here, Chicago was in desperate need of a defenseman to build their franchise around and in a forward heavy draft, they were better off doing that at 3 and leaving the forward for 19 so in our redraft, Chicago have to choose Tony Ford to build their defense around instead. While not the generational defenseman that Kennedy is, Ford is still one of the draft's top earning defensemen and a great pick to build off.

Original Pick Grade: A+

4. San Francisco Pride pride

Original Pick: Filip Zadina, RW, 873 TPE
New Pick: Lallo Selman, LW, 1410 TPE

In an alternate world, the Pride's management would've listened to Lallo Selman's draft day pitch to take him 4th overall and they would've actually ended up making the right choice. It was no secret that the Pride wanted a scoring winger with this pick and Zadina was exactly that, as well as the TPE leader at the time of the draft, a highly touted recreate and the "safe choice". Despite all that Lallo Selman really would've liked to be drafted by the Pride and saw a last minute opportunity to try selling himself to Pride management, rumour has it he guaranteed to them that when it was all said and done he'd be the better player. Fast forward 6 seasons, Lallo Selman is 4th in the class in TPE and on course to becoming a franchise winger for Chicago. Zadina played a couple seasons in San Francisco's bottom 6 before being traded (or released), who knows, either way he's a below average depth piece for New Orleans now and Lallo Selman is on his way to becoming one of the league's elite wingers a few seasons from now. Maybe they should've taken his pitch more seriously.

Original Pick Grade: C-

5. Tampa Bay Barracuda Barracuda

Original Pick: Espen Knutsen Jr, C, 430 TPE
New Pick: Aaron Wilson, C, 1426 TPE

What Tampa Bay thought they were getting: an extremely active, media whore, future #1 C who could become the spine of their rebuild. What they actually got: someone who just vanished into thin air before even completing the first season of his SHL contract and never ended up making the jump to the SHL. In our redraft they pick Aaron Wilson and actually end up getting not only their future #1 C but a player so dedicated to his team that he's willing to spend hours upon hours test simming for them, this could've really been a game changing pick for the Barracuda because Aaron Wilson was really everything they wanted Espen Knutsen Jr to be, if not even more.

Original Pick Grade: F

6. West Kendall Platoon Platoon

Original Pick: Tony Ford, D, 1244 TPE
New Pick: Julio Tokolosh, RW, 1409 TPE

The Platoon are the first team to go with another position in the redraft, while they were looking for defense in the draft, the draft's top two dmen are already gone by 6 in the redraft and the quality jump between Tokolosh and the next tier of players is just too big for West Kendall to overlook and draft a positional need here. Ford was eventually traded to LAP as part of a package for elite winger Sophia Bennett so maybe drafting an elite winger here instead of him is some sort of self fulfilling prophecy. Either way, WKP did good with this pick in the original draft and still did good with this pick in the redraft.

Original Pick Grade: A

7. Edmonton Blizzard Blizzard

Original Pick: Julio Tokolosh, RW, 1409 TPE
New Pick: Austin Roenick, RW, 1258 TPE

The Blizzard unfortunately just miss out on their star man in this redraft but still end up getting a good future 1st line winger here in Austin Roenick. The Blizzard's scouting team did a great job on the original pick to identify Tokolosh's potential as a player and as a user and snatch him up and they'll reap the benefits of that for seasons to come as Tokolosh approaches his prime but in this relatively deep draft they won't be disappointed with grabbing Roenick at the #7 pick either.

Original Pick Grade: A+

8. Tampa Bay Barracuda Barracuda

Original Pick: Cullen Gray, LW, 478 TPE
New Pick: Gunnar Soderberg, RW, 1172 TPE

Another pick and another bust for Tampa Bay who have not had the best draft up to this point in the original version, in this version they end up getting their original 2nd overall pick down at 8th. While Soderberg may still not be as high in TPE as some of the other wingers still available, Soderberg's user's LR presence makes this pick worth it and adds a strong winger who will be able to lift Tampa Bay's top six for seasons to come, as well as a strong LR presence making this the perfect pick for Tampa Bay on and off the ice. Meanwhile their actual pick here is yet another Tampa Bay draftee who went inactive before even seeing the ice for them.

Original Pick Grade: F

9. New England Wolfpack Wolfpack

Original Pick: Eko van Otter, LW, 1447 TPE
New Pick: Slap McShotty, C, 1349 TPE

The Wolfpack actually traded up, I believe with Calgary, to this pick specifically to snatch EvO and it's a textbook example of the perfect draft day trade. Wolfpack management identified a player they really wanted, realized they may need to make a move to secure him, and did just that getting a player that they really should've never had the chance to get in the process. Hotdog is not only 2nd in the class in TPE and developing into a future franchise winger, but also New England's co-GM, this pick worked out beautifully for them and while he's not available in the redraft, they manage to get a familiar face, Slap McShotty who they originally took at 16 in S47 and who has also worked out wonderfully for them joins them at 9th overall in the redraft in order to not risk losing their future top C in the next 7 picks.

Original Pick Grade: A+

10. New Orleans Specters Specters

Original Pick: Charlie Serpe, D, 1108 TPE
New Pick: Charlie Serpe, D, 1108 TPE

We've got the first unchanged pick of the draft at 10th overall. There are definitely some better players available but it was clear the New Orleans needed defense here and while Duggan is still on the board with more TPE, we're gonna keep Serpe here since he's already a strong part of the team and their LR and the difference between the two of them isn't big enough to warrant the change. Serpe's gonna be a solid top 4 defenseman for NOLA so overall a decent pick here for them.

Original Pick Grade: A

11. Hamilton Steelhawks Steelhawks

Original Pick: Sami Rieder, C, 444 TPE
New Pick: Theo Morgan, RW, 1258 TPE

Yet another bust in a draft that turned up a lot of really good players but also a lot of 1st round flops, Rieder had a huge awakening and realized he was actually German instead of Finnish shortly after the draft and what looked like a future #1 C for Hamilton ended up being someone who vanished before finishing his first year as a send down. In his place, the Steelhawks bring back and old friend in Theo Morgan who's agent Roberto Martucci spent a large part of his career with. I'm sure Morgan would've liked to play for the same team as his agent and idol and I'm sure the Steelhawks would've liked even more to have a future top line winger rather than a player who never got to see the SHL.

Original Pick Grade: F

I actually lied and got bored of this so I won't do the first 2 rounds but I'll keep redrafting with small write-ups until I'm out of actives.

12. Winnipeg Jets Jets

Original Pick: Noah Gallagher, LW, 1314 TPE
New Pick: Noah Gallagher, LW, 1314 TPE

The Jets also bring back a familiar face with this pick, not only is Noah Gallagher the client of Jets legend John McBride but he's also their original pick in this slot, it turned out to be a good pick for them even if new management traded him a few seasons later.

Original Pick Grade: A

13. Tampa Bay Barracuda Barracuda

Original Pick: Austin Roenick, RW, 1258 TPE
New Pick: Nicolaj Muller, LW, 1209 TPE

Wow Tampa Bay making good picks in S47? That's shocking. Their original pick here is gone in the redraft but they'll be more than happy to snatch Nicolaj Muller who should've never fell to 22 in the original draft.

Original Pick Grade: A

14. Tampa Bay Barracuda Barracuda

Original Pick: Akashi Sixnine, D, 1031 TPE
New Pick: Jax Duggan, D, 1142 TPE

So Tampa Bay ends up with the original 1st and 2nd overall picks in the redraft but they get them at 8 and 14, this wasn't a bad pick considering who was still available and their need for a defenseman but they'll be happy to get Duggan here in the redraft. Decent pick.

Original Pick Grade: B-

15. Los Angeles Panthers Panthers

Original Pick: Theo Morgan, RW, 1258 TPE
New Pick: Boris Poroshenko, LW, 1101 TPE

With Morgan gone and LA's management keen on bringing in recreates through the draft, LA makes this SHL old timer sky rocket up the draft board and gets a fairly solid top 6 winger for the future. Turned out to be a pretty good pick.

Original Pick Grade: A

16. New England Wolfpack Wolfpack

Original Pick: Slap McShotty, C, 1349 TPE
New Pick: Harry Carpet, G, 1328 TPE

With McShotty being taken by their earlier pick in the draft, New England can take advantage of the dwindling draft board and use it to replace their semi active low TPE goalie with future elite starter Harry Carpet late in the first round. Redraft pick pretty good, original pick even better.

Original Pick Grade: A+

17. Hamilton Steelhawks Steelhawks

Original Pick: Aaron Wilson, C, 1426 TPE
New Pick: Dale Miller, LW, 981 TPE

One of several late 1st/early 2nd round steals, Aaron Wilson doesn't make it to the Steelhawks at 17 in the redraft but they'll be more than glad to grab the winger they got later in the 2nd, Dale Miller, who may be a slower earner but has become a big part of their team off the ice and who will still be a decent top 6 forward for them later on.

Original Pick Grade: A+

18. Buffalo Stampede Stampede

Original Pick: Lallo Selman, LW, 1410 TPE
New Pick: Boruvka Banananak, RW, 960 TPE

Speaking of steals, the Stampede scouting team did a great job of identifying Lallo Selman as a future elite winger making him one of 3 consecutive steals here from picks 16-18, they don't get exactly the same quality of winger in the redraft but still end up with a pretty good future 2nd/3rd line winger.

Original Pick Grade: A+

19. Chicago Syndicate syndicate

Original Pick: Martijn Westbroek, C, 1201 TPE
New Pick: Martijn Westbroek, C, 1201 TPE

Westbroek probably could've gone a few spots earlier but it was well known at the time of the draft that he only wanted to play in Chicago and so he'll stay here in the redraft. Good pick for the Syndicate nonetheless who locked down their C core for seasons to come.

Original Pick Grade: B+

20. San Francisco Pride pride

Original Pick: Jaguar Johnson, LW, 309 TPE
New Pick: Marc Hagan, C, 763 TPE

Another yikes for the Pride here with a player who never even made it to the big leagues, they could've had Muller here which would've been great for them but it wasn't meant to be. In the redraft they could've had a better player but needed the forward more so they grab 3rd line C Marc Hagan, who ironically almost peaked at the same TPE as their 4th overall pick 16 picks earlier.

Original Pick Grade: F

21. New England Wolfpack Wolfpack

Original Pick: Joseph Laraque, RW, 510 TPE
New Pick: Joseph Laraque, RW, 510 TPE

New England also passes on the best player on the board in this redraft because of their lack of need for defense, instead they keep the same pick who they ended up trading in a package for star forward Anders Christiansen before he ultimately went inactive. Decent pick overall because of the trade, maybe they'll get lucky again with this redraft and get some value before he goes poof.

Original Pick Grade: C-

22. Buffalo Stampede Stampede

Original Pick: Nicolaj Muller, LW, 1209 TPE
New Pick: Igor Volkov, D, 806 TPE

Another steal for Buffalo at 22 saw them use excellent scouting to turn two 2nds into two 1sts, they're not so lucky again in the redraft but still get a decent value pick with a semi active depth defenseman at 22. They'll probably wish they could've had their original pick which was obviously great.

Original Pick Grade: A+

That concludes my redraft because we're out of actives except for Bathory who was a co-GM and couldn't go anywhere except 26, sorry this got a little sloppy at the end, I got bored/lazy but I never finish anything I commit to so I figured I should really finish this even if the last little bit wasn't as good as the beginning was. I know I'm kinda just rambling at this point but I don't really know how to end this outro and rambling equals words so forgive me but you're gonna have to read just a little more incoherent thoughts that get typed out. Moral of the story, New England and Buffalo: really good draft, Tampa Bay and San Francisco: yikes. Ok, now I'm done I guess.
