SHL Visual History - luke - 04-25-2020 Hello SHL, we are presenting a new addition to the SHL History Page, SHL History Visualized! So what does that entail? Through some great work on tableau, we are able to give you some visualizations that we havent had before in the SHL. So right now(and SHL only for right now), we present a couple graphs. 1. https://public.tableau.com/profile/luke.td#!/vizhome/SHLMapHistory/TeamsThroughSeasonswithMap?publish=yes So what this is, there are 3 Dashboards on the Tableau. Teams with Map What that is, is from S1->Present you can select what season you want to go to. And if you hover over the team logo it will show the season’s record for the team, along with who was the GM at that time. Also side note: (The team logo at that time. Some might be estimates, as there is not a definitive history of when logos were used). A great thing that Tableau has is a animation tool, so if you click Then you will get a animation from Whatever season you are at -> to the present season. So it will iterate through each season, showing you the teams, if a team moved, showing you were. Also, on the bottom left of the map, it has the added Wins each season. So with each season, the wins will grow, until by the end it has the # of wins each franchise has throughout all of their seasons. The last thing I want to note about this, is that you see the size of the logo’s gain size and shrink in size each season. So what that is about, the more wins the team has that certain season, the bigger the logo would be. And vice versa, as they dont have has that many wins, their logo shrinks. The goal behind that is to visually show when teams were good on the map, so if a user didnt know who was good at certain periods, then it will help show visually how good each teams were. Teams Through Seasons So the goal here is to show how good each team are on a regular line graph. It also shows the logo through each season. The one problem with that is that the line also breaks it up for each Logo Era. like the last Tab, you can do an animation from Season X -> Present Season. Another thing that you can see is that you can select specific teams you want on the graph. The default I have is to include all of the teams(which is you use the animation feature, then it gets very messy really quick). So if you select the dropdown, then you can de-select the all button, and select the teams that you want to show. Box Plots So the final tab that you should view is the Box Plots, that is the aggregation of each teams points, from season to season. So a box plot is, for a data set you get the average of the set(so the average of the set of points per team) So for example, if Team A, had a set of 100 Points, 90 Points, 87 Points, 105 Points, then the average of that is 95.5 points. So that is the middle of the box plot. And then the top of the box is quartiles. A quartiles is (A quartile is a type of quantile which divides the number of data points into four more or less equal parts, or quarters. The first quartile is defined as the middle number between the smallest number and the median of the data set) Anyway, you dont really need to understand what that means to understand the graph. As it shows the average points of each Franchise over their franchise history. So teams like CGY, WPG, NOLA, who have had very good franchise records, have a higher average in comparison to teams like MAN or SFP who historically havent been great. So the 2nd Tableau is like “teams through the seasons” in the first Tableau. Link: https://public.tableau.com/profile/luke.td#!/vizhome/TimelineTest_15875278765770/OriginalSix So here there are 4 Tabs that you can click on. All Teams. This is almost a replica of the tab of “teams through the seasons”, but instead of selecting certain teams, you can highlight certain teams and see how they are compared to other teams. Then there are 3 other tabs. Original Six, S2-S10 Expansion teams, S25&S46 Expansions. So those are split up into the different expansion era’s of the SHL, so people can compare teams around the same era. Hopefully in the future there are more things to visualize, and if you have ideas that would be cool to see visualized in the history section, let me know and Ill see what I can do. - SHL History Team S35-S56 Edit: More By Juke RE: SHL Visual History - DeletedAtUserRequest - 04-25-2020 Wooooo Awesome! ArGar is the real OG, so many things wouldn’t have existed without him RE: SHL Visual History - luke - 06-12-2020 Thanks to the help of DrunkenTeddy for help setting it up with me. We now have a live version of the SHL Map on the site. IF you go to https://simulationhockey.com/shlmap.php then you will see it. As a default view it has where the SHL and SMJHL teams are. And then if you click the top left button next to the word "SHL Maps" you can select other Layers like Divisions and Conferences for the SHL. And then if you click on each logo, it will give you their logo, their alt logo if they have one, and their jerseys. And then also a link to their team info page in teh history section RE: SHL Visual History - Chevy - 06-12-2020 Freaking awesome Luke!
