Richard Majors Draft night recap (x2 draft media) - Hefe4711 - 05-20-2020

Another year, another draft.  This time, there would be a longer wait for Richard Majors as he is not planned to come off the board till later in the draft.  None of the draft previews have him mentioned in the first couple of rounds, mostly because goalies are not that important, and he did not have the greatest of years.

To say that this past year was a let down is not entirely accurate.  He was a rookie who was drafted by a team, the St. Louis Scarecrows, who had an established goalie who was one year away from being called up by the SHL.  This led Richard to not play as often as he would have liked and how often he was used to.  He spent his time watching and learning, but there is only so much of that that you can do.  Sometimes you need to get into the games and show what you can do and learn under true game conditions.  Playing once every eight or nine games through him off his game and caused him to lose focus during games and do things that he had not done during peewee.

Therefore, Richard knew during this draft he was going to have to wait to get his name called.  He sat down on the couch, surrounded by his family, and waited.  The wait lasted a while.  The first two rounds went by and Richard was not paying attention to the draft.  His phone, sitting on the table, did not ring.  He was chatting with his family and friends.  He was relaxed, knowing that where he got drafted was not really going to matter, because next year, he would be back down in St. Louis.

This draft was just a formality, he knew he was going to get drafted, it just was going to matter when and where.  He had heard from a couple of general managers leading up to the draft, though he also knew that he could be drafted by any team once it gets into the later rounds.  He was not counting on any team to take him.  He had not heard from anyone that if he were available at a certain spot, that they would grab him without hesitation.  He was going to be what he did not want to be, and that was an afterthought.

Richard knew it was his own fault, and he was trying to not be down or let his family and friends know that he had let them down.  This past year was eye opening to him because it showed what he was and was not able to do.  It wore on him and now it was going to be a new beginning.

Richard started to pay attention as the draft moved into the third round.  Still a little early for him to be drafted, from what he believed, but also anything can happen in a draft so he would start to pay attention.  He sat down on his couch and stiffened up a little bit, paying closer attention to the goings on of the draft.  He is ignoring the recap of all the players that are being drafted.

As the fourth round is continuing, his phone rings.  Everyone looks down at the phone and Richard looks at it and shakes his head.  He picks it up and after a couple of seconds he hangs up angrily. A telemarketer called.  Richard almost threw down his phone in disgust, but he kept his composure and just placed it down.  Last thing he would need to do is break his phone and never be able to get any phone calls.

As the third round came to an end, all those goalies and other players being drafted before him, made him aware of the failure of his first season in the SMJHL.  This draft was just the players who were drafted with him into the SMJHL the year before. Richard was a mid-second round pick and now he is going to be drafted in the fourth or later round, if at all.

As the fourth round begins, the phone rings again.  Richard picks it up, hesitant that it is not someone messing with him.  This time, it is the general manager of the Winnipeg Jets @Muerto.  He informs Richard that the Winnipeg Jets will be selecting Richard with their fourth-round selection and that he cannot wait to see what he can do in the SMJHL now that Elizabeth Doyle is moving up to the SHL.  Richard thanks him and after a couple of minutes of discussion he hangs up.

Everyone around him is cheering him on as he just sits there, thankful that the night is over.  This was a much longer wait then he thought it would be and now he knows that the real work begins.  He didn’t do his best in the first season and now he must work his tail off to make sure he can turn it around and not be burned out after 3 years and never make it to the SHL.
