[SJHN] S54 SMJHL Awards Race - Trade Deadline - Dextaria - 06-20-2020

‌ ‌
With the season reaching the Trade Deadline, our SJHN analysts took a look at who they thought were the frontrunners for each of the SMJHL’s awards at this point in time. Each person nominated two names, and the ones with the most votes were considered to be the leading candidates.

Raymond Lindsay Trophy (MVP as voted by the players): Rikard Hammarberg (ANA), Cale Amundsen (NL)
Other mentions: Rocco Berni (KEL), Cillian Kavanagh (KEL), Jaska Seppala (KEL)

Dex: For me, I define the MVP as a player that is clearly dominant on the team and has a wide margin from the next best player. That is why Anaheim forward Rikard Hammarberg came to mind immediately as he is leading the Outlaws team in points by a sizable margin, helping the team win in spite of allowing a number of goals in the first half of the season. If Hammarberg can keep this, he will certainly be my first vote for MVP. However, also in the running for me personally are the goaltenders Cale Amundsen of Newfoundland and Cillian Kavanagh of Kelowna. Both have been there to bail out the team when goals were hard to come by posting above 0.915 SV% in over 20 games played. Kavanagh’s stats are even more impressive as along with his team’s defense, he is able to put up a below 2.00 GAA. As a result of Kavanaghs strong play so far, the team boasts the league’s best goals against leading by over 20 fewer goals allowed.

Roastpuff: I think even though he is playing on the 2nd or 3rd line for Anaheim, Rikard Hammarberg deserves the Raymond Lindsay trophy as the MVP for the Outlaws as he has been driving the offence. The coaches and GMs have seen this, and his minutes have gone up of late, and he has now earned some play time on the first power play unit, which will hopefully see his offensive impact continue to increase for the Outlaws. Without Hammarberg, Anaheim would likely be in a worse spot than they are now, as the extremely green defense corps have been leakier than a sieve and the Outlaws tend to bleed goals against at an alarming rate. Hammarberg is also responsible on the defensive side of the puck, and plays on the penalty kill as well; he sports the second highest defensive game rating of the team, behind only fellow sophomore center Taylor Johansson.

The entire first line for the Kelowna Knights have also been outstanding, but in terms of point production none of them really stand out as the most valuable player for the Knights, an honour that I would instead accord to Cillian Kavanagh who has been very solid in net, bailing out a very offensive-minded forward and defense corps when they overextend themselves.

Boom: Rikard Hammarberg is a rather unique case for me in this award. While he isn’t leading the league in points outright, he’s done it with comparably less help from his teammates than competitors who have benefited from playing on very strong lines, such as the Kelowna trio and Newfoundland’s line of Minamino, Forrester and Twist. Hammarberg also spent parts of the season without as much power-play time as his counterparts, though he has gained increased responsibility with his strong season. His defensive play also deserves mention, as Hammarberg has 20 takeaways to only 20 giveaways, over 30 hits and shot blocks, and the second-best defensive game rating among his team and among all forwards. The other nominee for us that received the most votes was Newfoundland’s Cale Amundsen, who has been a wall for the Eastern Conference-leading Berserkers. While his stats aren’t quite as good as other contender Cillian Kavanagh for Kelowna, Amundsen has played more games and faced a lot more shots. Other names to receive votes included Cillian Kavanagh and his forward teammates Rocco Berni and Jaska Seppala, who are both in the running for the scoring title.

Ideen Fallah Trophy (MVP as voted by award committee): Cale Amundsen (NL), Rotticus Scott (KEL), Ryuuji Minamino (NL)

Dex: The award committee may have a different opinion on what is considered an MVP and so it seems like we believe that the league leaders in points, as well as the goaltender with the best stats will have a good shot at winning this trophy. Of course there is Rotticus Scott of the Kelowna Knights who currently leads the league in points being over a point per game alongside a good lead over the next top point scorer. Then there is Ryuuji Minamino of the Newfoundland Berserkers who was at the top of the points board for quite some time this season and not too far behind Scott. He is currently fighting against other Knights players like Jaska Seppala and Rocco Berni who are all gunning for 1st in points. Lastly, there’s Cale Amundsen of Newfoundland as well who played extremely well so far. He has played the 2nd most games for a goaltender behind Vancouver’s Name Redacted. Among the goaltenders that have played just as many games, Amundsen has the best save percentage and goals against average with a save percentage above 0.915 and a goals against average of just above 2.00. Only Kavanagh has better stats but he has played fewer games than Amundsen. And so, if I have to pick my candidate at this time I’d have to go with Rotticus Scott as he is the only player above a point per game.

Roastpuff: If the players choose one, rarely will the committee award the Ideen Fallah trophy to the same player unless they are exceedingly outstanding in the field. In this case, I think that Cale Amundsen will be the recipient of the Award Committee’s MVP trophy as he has proven himself to be of great value to the Newfoundland Berserkers and their dominance of the field this season. Yes there are defensive stalwarts there such as Jukka Timonen, but Cale is there as a last line of defence and he has proven himself to be a top goaltender in the league with excellent save percentage and goals against numbers. Without Amundsen there, I think Newfoundland’s dominance would be diminished, and would see them quite a few points lower as he has stolen them a few games where the rest of the team came out a bit flat.

Mathias Chouinard Trophy (GM of the year): JNH/SDCore (NL), Fuzz/cptrella (CAR)
Other mentions: Katth/Naosu (KEL)

Dex: After the Newfoundland Berserkers placed 3rd in their conference and the Carolina Kraken placed 4th, both teams have become powerhouses in the East as the Detroit Falcons are in a bit of a slump after winning the Four Star Cup. Both the Berserkers and the Kraken have surpassed their point totals of last season with a quarter of the season left to go. They currently sit 1st and 2nd in their conference with the Newfoundland Berserkers leading the league in points. This is why their respective GMs of JNH/SDCore and Fuzz/cptrella are good candidates for GM of the year. Both teams have improved drastically and I’m sure their GMs have played a big role in that. Of course, there is also the Kelowna Knights who deserve some recognition with yet another strong showing in the West. This is the 2nd straight season that the Knights are leading the conference and by the looks of it they can even take over 1st in the league if they keep playing this way. But, if I had to choose who I’d say wins the trophy for GM of the year I’d have to go with JNH/SDCore this season as the team has looked dominant.

Roastpuff: Newfoundland’s duo of GMs, JNH and SDCore, deserve this award much like how Tig and Nour got it last season. This all-star cast that they’ve assembled is going to be a juggernaut to pass for the Four Star cup, and they are the odds-on favourites to win it.

Boom: Newfoundland has been a breakout team this season, and a lot of that has to do with excellent work from the GM duo of JNH and SDCore. Every position on the roster is filled with an actively updating player. While a lot of the groundwork was laid last season to the point where the Berserkers only had space to draft three players last season and chose to basically trade out of the draft for future picks, it takes a strong GM team to keep everyone engaged. Carolina has additionally made a strong showing this season. After struggling last season due to mass call-ups to the SHL, the Kraken have bounced back to have one of the best offenses in the SMJHL and are firmly in second place in the Eastern Conference.

Zach Miller Trophy (most dedicated): Ryosuke Sato (VAN)
Other mentions: Alexander Roach (MET), Jack Kanoff (DET), Patric Twist (NL), Eric Hudson (STL), Valentin Kalashnikov (MET)

Dex: It’s a little hard for me to comment on this one as my other members of the SJHN are voting me for the award. I appreciate the support and I’m sure that there are a bunch of other members on the site that help keep the SMJHL going! I guess talking a little bit about myself, as you can see I am a member of the SJHN helping produce media as well as graphics for the SMJHL 3 Stars. Also, I help out with SMJHL Primetime graphics, Vancouver management, and am the SMJHL budget director which position I really enjoy as I’m a big fan of spreadsheets (I even did a whole revamp for the teams so go check it out!). But enough about me as there are a bunch of people that are helping out in big ways on the site. I’d like to recognize the SMJHL HO Interns Jack Kanoff (jeffie43) and Patric Twist (Patty). Interns are always on top of helping the SMJHL by approving players and helping out with head office activities. They do a lot in keeping the league running and I appreciate their dedication!

Roastpuff: I think Dextaria/Ryosuke Sato fully deserves this award as he has been involved in so many facets of the site that help to keep it running smoothly! Not only does he do the graphics for the SJHN, he also does graphics and other work for the SMJHL PT team, and holds the position of SMJHL budget director which can sometimes be a thankless job! A lot of balls to juggle for Dextaria, and he’s keeping them all up in the air.

Quilha Agante Trophy (best defenseman): Jukka Timonen (NLB), Adam Scianna (KEL), Adam Freidland (CAR)
Other mentions: Ben van Dijk (CAR), PBJ Souppan (NL)

Dex: The trophy for best defenseman is always hard to decide as they can win for having the most points as a defenseman, best defensive game, or a combination of both. Personally, I think that the best defenseman has to be the best all around defenseman, both offensively and defensively. And so, my personal vote for best defenseman goes to Ben van Dijk. As I am writing this, van Dijk is 3rd in defenseman scoring with over 50 hits, 50 shots blocked, and a takeaway to giveaway ratio of over 1. However, of course there are a number of other defensemen that you can make the argument that deserve the award as well. First there is the leader in points for a defenseman in Adam Freidland who is also a solid physical presence with 10 fights on the season already. Then there is PBJ Souppan who is 2nd in defensemen scoring with 50 hits and over 50 shots blocked; however, his takeaway to giveaway ratio is lacking in comparison. Next there’s Adam Scianna with over 20 points, 50 hits, and 60 shots blocked. Although, similar to PBJ Souppan his takeaway to giveaway ratio is his one flaw. Lastly, there’s Jukka Timonen with 20 points as well.

Roastpuff: People always define best defenseman differently - is it getting the most points? Is it the best defensive game? Is it a bit of both? I think a best defenseman should combine all of these things in a way that lets them be utilized to the fullest by their team. This hypothetical defenseman should be able to be deployed in any role by their team and hold their own, if not excel.

I think Jukka Timonen is the choice for the Quilha Agante Trophy this season because he’s proven to be the absolute linchpin for the Newfoundland Berserkers’ back end. He plays special teams time on both the penalty kill and power play, chews up minutes for even strength, and is only trailing Souppan for defenseman points on the team. Without Timonen, Newfoundland would probably be not as strong on the back end, and their current position would be more precarious.

Brandon Holmes Trophy (best defensive forward): Simothy Drunkebird (COL), CT Carragher (ANA)
Other mentions: Kriss Darzins (STL), Niccolo Livius (NL), Eric Hudson (STL)

Dex: For best defensive forward we have to look at the hits given by the player, the takeaway to giveaway ratio, as well as their shots blocked. Leading hits is Detroit’s Edward Williams with over 120 but Colorado’s Simothy Drunkebird is not too far behind with over 100 hits as well. Also, alongside of Drunkebird’s hits is over 30 shots blocked. Leading the takeaways for forwards is CT Carragher with a takeaway to giveaway ratio of over 1.5. In addition to his takeaways, Carragher has around 30 hits and 30 shots blocked. Leading shots blocked for forwards is Eric Hudson with over 60 shots blocked already. He also has over 15 hits and a takeaway to giveaway ratio of about 1. However, my leading candidate for best defensive forward is Niccolo Livius of the Newfoundland Berserkers. Livius already has 60 hits and around 50 shots blocked with a takeaway to giveaway ratio of around 1. He has good stats in all of the defensive categories and if he can keep this up for the remainder of the season maybe the committee can recognize his defensive capabilities as well.

Roastpuff: My vote for this trophy goes to Eric Hudson of St. Louis, who is the cornerstone of their penalty kill special teams. To spend that much short-handed time on the ice and still retain the defensive game rating that he has is quite the accomplishment. 83 shot blocks, a +7 giveaway/takeaway differential, and still managing to score 25 points is excellent two-way work!

Tom Corcoran Trophy (best goalie): Cale Amundsen (NLB), Cillian Kavanagh (KEL)

Dex: I think without a doubt that both Cale Amundsen and Cillian Kavanagh would be the top 2 candidates for the best goalie award. They are the top 2 goaltenders with regards to statistics and the number of games that they have played. Both of Kavanagh’s and Amundsen’s stats are similar in terms of goals against average and save percentage, which are below 2.00 and above 0.915 respectively, but Amundsen has played a few more games. At the time that I am writing this, I’d have to give my vote for Cillian Kavanagh as much as I’d like Amundsen to win this trophy as well. Kavanagh is playing behind a relatively weaker defensive core where they boast 3 rookie defensemen on the blueline. In comparison, although the Berserkers don’t have the 2 star defensemen that the Knights do, they do have all of their defensemen above 300 TPE which should make things easier for Amundsen in net. That’s why I’m going with Kavanagh on this one but I wouldn’t be surprised to see Amundsen take this trophy home for the 2nd straight season.

Roastpuff: I think the previous holder of the Tom Corcoran, Cale Amundsen, has a good chance of repeating. He has proven himself to be very valuable to a Newfoundland team looking to snag a Four Star Cup as a solid, dependable wall in net behind a strong though not outstanding defense corps. Amundsen has consistently performed above expectations, and sometimes have kept the Berserkers in it when their defense faltered.

Esa Anrikkanen Trophy (best rookie): Chris Goodname (KEL), Young Logo (STL), Brandt Underton (STL)

Dex: Last season this award was given to goaltender Cale Amundsen but in spite of a couple of rookie goaltenders that entered the league, I don’t think they have played enough games to win this award. And so, the current rookie scoring leader is Chris Goodname of Kelowna who appears to be playing 3rd line defensive pairing for them. Goodname has a slight lead over St. Louis’ Young Logo who plays on their 3rd forward line. Both are nearing 20 points on the season already and are top candidates for best rookie. However, Brandt Underton of St. Louis was also brought up in this discussion. If I’m not mistaken, Underton has the highest defensive rating of all rookies and is currently playing on St. Louis’ 3rd defensive pairing. He also has over 10 points on the season already so it will be interesting to see if the committee will take his defensive abilities into account. Personally for me though, I think Chris Goodname has a great chance of taking home the rookie trophy this season.

Roastpuff: Much like S52 in the SMJHL, I think this trophy will go to the high scoring rookie points leader, in this case Chris Goodname. He’s been part of a juggernaut team in Kelowna and showing up quite

Ron Bolt Trophy (most sportsmanlike): Sven Svenson (COL), Eric Hudson (STL)
Other mentions: Trevor Johnson (STL), Jaska Seppala (KEL), Jimmy Wagner (CAR)

Dex: This is another one in which there were a bunch of mentions. We were looking at penalty minutes and hits in relation to their games played and time on ice. There’s Sven Svenson of Colorado who has only taken a single penalty this season as I write this and less than 10 hits thrown. This with the knowledge that Svenson played over 17 minutes a night. Then there’s St. Louis’ Eric Hudson who has yet to have a penalty on the season and has only 17 hits playing similar amounts of ice time. To be honest, there are so many players with few penalties and hits that makes it hard to choose a leading candidate for me personally. As mentioned, there’s Johnson with 0 penalty minutes and only about 5 hits. And so, if I had to choose who I think is the most sportsmanlike player I’d have to go with Trevor Johnson at this time as he has the aforementioned 0 penalties and few hits playing around 17 minutes a night. Of course this can change as the season goes along but he is my personal nominee.

Roastpuff: A bit of an odd award where you reward someone for not taking penalties, in this case I’d have to go with Dextaria’s mention of Trevor Johnson as he has so far managed to avoid taking penalties while playing a quite significant amount of time.

Vyacheslav Onoprienko Trophy (most underrated): Ben van Dijk (CAR), Grapefruit Lizard (STL)
Other mentions: Steve Harrington (NL), Kris Darzins (STL), SLATT Potts (NL), (Clean) Andrei Kostitsyn (NL)

Dex: With the changes to how the Onoprienko trophy is handed, it seems like we believe that the winner will be from either Carolina, St. Louis, or Newfoundland. For those of you who don’t know, each team is able to nominate a single player on their team for being the most underrated and so looking at our mentions, it seems like it’ll be a hard choice for some GMs. From Carolina there’s Ben van Dijk who although has a chance to win the best defenseman award, also feels underrated as his teammate Adam Friedland is having a monster of a season offensively. Van Dijk already has 25 points, 50 hits, 60 shots blocked, and a takeaway to giveaway ratio of 1.5. That’s why if van Dijk does not win the best defenseman award, I’d certainly have him as the most underrated. Then, from the St. Louis Scarecrows we have Grapefruit Lizard and Kris Darzins. Both have been silently racking up the points this season for the Scarecrows and even much so for Lizard as he plays 3rd line minutes. Lastly, for the Newfoundland Berserkers there are a number of players in Steve Harrington, SLATT Potts, and (Clean) Andrei Kostitsyn but from this list I’d go with Kostitsyn. He has similar amounts of points with almost 5 fewer minutes on average. As for out of everyone, I’d say Lizard has a good chance of winning this trophy but I’d also like for van Dijk to win it as well if he doesn’t win the best defenseman award.

Roastpuff: This is a hard trophy to award to someone. How do you define underrated?

In my case, I choose to award the trophy to Clean Andrei, as he has labored under the shadow of several better known stars on the Newfoundland Berserkers while putting up points. Even with less minutes than some of the other names on this list, Kostitsyn is quietly putting up points and helping the secondary offense of Newfoundland in their chase for the Four Star Cup.

Jared Hanson Trophy (league points leader): Ryuuji Minamino (NL), Jimmy Wagner (CAR), Rotticus Scott (KEL)

Roberto Martucci Trophy (league goals leader): Ryuuji Minamino (NL), Jimmy Wagner (CAR), Jaska Seppala (KEL), Kwame Dakari (CAR)

You're missing the highest scoring Rookie on your list, which is Ryu Jones of Anaheim.

If history is any indication, you have the logic for MVPs backwards. The mob almost always votes for the highest scorer.

I find those Onoprienko noms interesting, as none of those players have been nominated so far lol

Failing SJHN should fire its entire editorial board. Never has a media outlet been so totally wrong. Sad!
