RE: S54 SMJHL PT #6 - MVPs - overdoo - 06-29-2020

Gonna go with the only guy I played with this season, Axel Foley. We were able to make a difference since our first shift together, quite literally. Our first game was against the Kelowna Knights, and I think being freshly drafted we both wanted to come in and have an impact fast. My first assist, and his first goal, both ended up happening in our first shift. It ended up being the opening goal of the season for the Kraken, and really paved the way to our first win. I ended up getting the first star that game with 2 assists, and really I have to thank Foley for putting that first goal in. Really set my nerves for the rest of the season. My first goal came from a less than flattering 4-1 loss to Newfoundland, and while Foley didn't get the assist on it, he was on the ice and made sure to get that puck afterwards.

Aside from that, I think we really made it easy for each other to develop in the SMJHL. Halfway through the season, I had 2 goals and 7 asssists. Pretty good for a rookie, but my defense.. Wasn't there. I was a -5 and was letting up way more goals than we put in while I was on the ice, a GF60/GA60 of 0.75. Foley, being on the same line, didn't have nice looking stats on defense either. He was a -8, and had a GF60/GA60 of 0.64. It was clear something needed to change, and I really started putting in the work on becoming better in my own end. Together, we got those numbers right back up. We didn't have close to the same offensive production, but it was clear it made a difference. I ended as a +1, with a GF60/GA60 of 1.03, while Foley got up to a -3 and a GF60/GA60 of 0.92. A huge improvement in just the last half of the season.

There was times that I think we were definitely a little discouraged with some bad luck (PDO's of 95 and 97 almost the entire year), but we started getting it going towards the end of the season, and now we're ready to make a difference in the playoffs. And I can't wait to play with this man however long we stay with the Kraken.

This season our lines and defensive pairs got changed a lot.. I think. Personally I got chance to play with Noah Nystrom @LightningDragon, Big Drincc @.LB , Luciano Vessot @NJBadApple , Teddy Park. Now I’m playing with Noah. He is strong skater responsible on ice. Fits for me as OD and DD duo missing piece. Only we had something missing. I had great chemsitry with Big but he got alcohol addicted or something. Coach did something wild and paired me up with Teddy Park @trashae . He is great guy. Same age as I, very skilled, talented, he is learning faster than I. He has talent to play simple and he is youngest best shutdown defenceman I’ve ever seen. And he can be creative same time. I like that because it can help me create some scoring chances since I have good quarterback qualities. Teddy scored 3 times this season (3+16) . I believe I was on the ice when he scored them all. Funny I never assisted on his goals but he did assist on my goal against Newfoundland. I got 4+19 this season. In the end Teddy got up to 2nd pair. Well deserved. I will be there soon too.

I'm gonna echo my teammate and sometimes linemate @kikish18.  From the beginning being in the same rookie class and playing opposite sides on D we were kinda joined at the hip until getting more settled into our builds.  Right out the gate we played fairly complimentary roles with his offensive support being the yin to my stay at home mindset.  Watching his offensive success so closely from the ice steered my build and in the middle of the season I spent several weeks pouring TPE into the offensive side of the ice after I got an early 4 points before a pretty lengthy scoring drought.  Despite all my inconsistencies @kikish18 remained a steady offensive presence and led all rookies in points for much of the season even after our pairing was split up.  I look forward to seeing him again on the 2nd pairing come next season so that we can continue to play complimentary hockey and keep driving team success.

Igor's worst game was against the Colorado Raptors on 11/26 where he went -4. The Raptors second line of Chris Cerullo, Carlos Brown, Jean-Uhtred Ragnarsson-Tremblay absolutely pounded the Armada. Combined they scored 6 out of the 8 goals that Colorado scored that night. Where the Armada only scored a single goal in the first period. Every time Victory stepped on the ice, there was the 2nd line again gunning towards their zone and there was nothing he could to stop them. Igor had a DGR of 32 and an OGR of 41, by and far the worst outing of the year for him. That second line for Colorado got the 3 stars of the night with Carlos Brown leading with his 4 goals on the night. Who knows what high altitude training was going on in Colorado to give them the edge they needed to overtake the Armada. This was around the time of the rookie's dinner, so maybe the entire team was feeling sluggish and it effected Igor the most. It's a night he'd love to forget.

The all-rookie Armada line consisting of Left Wing; TURG TURG (38th overall), Right Wing turned MiddleMan; Taylor Gervais (18th overall), and Right Wing; Sven Gunnar (37th overall) found solid chemistry together in their opening year. Despite not picking up as many points as Anaheim’s Ryu Jones, the Armada trio were one of two all-rookie lines to have each of their members pick up 10 or more points. Behind only the Maine Timber’s line of Walton Stromberg (7/14/21), Jesse Seppanen (9/12/21), and Victor Ball (8/10/18), the Armada young guns finished with 17 (Gervais), 16 (Gunnar), and 14 (TURG) points. They also finished with an overall +/- stat of -2, compared to the Timber’s -31 for their rookie line. Armada’s line were slightly stronger on the defensive puck, snagging 46 TkA to the Timber’s 38. But the Timber rookies were better at keeping the puck on their own stick, only giving the puck away 39 times to the Armada’s 44.

Both the Timber and Armada will have solid lineups going into the next season. If they don’t lose these players to the SHL, look for them all to make a big splash in the coming seasons.

As a goalie, I'm going to have to have a shout out to my defensive shutdown pair on the Scarecrows, Axel Meszaros and Erben Kasius. While they don't rack up tons of points, they lock down opponent's top lines and make my life a lot easier. Each had at least 60 shot blocks on the season (Meszaros with 68 and Kasius had 60). With a combined 90 hits between the two, entering the zone became a clear hazard for opposing skaters, who had to watch their step or get crushed.

Even when I said they didn't put up a ton of points, Meszaros still directly contributed for 15 points this season, and Kasius collected 17. Even while clearly focused on the defensive aspects of the game, this pairing aren't one-dimensional, and shouldn't be underestimated in the opponent's end either.

My personal MVPs this season are Meszaros and Kasius, whom without I would have probably let in more goals in my rookie season.

The MVP of the regular season for the Newfoundland Berserkers is the second line which includes wingers Clean Andrei Kostitsyn, Ryuuji Minamino and center Matthew Forrester. Liam Slate got to play with them a few times during botched line-changes (which was rare). But when he did the line was dominate all over the ice. The second line for the Berserkers really ticked this season and brought the team up to the top of the SMJHL standings. Ryuuji Minamino lead the lead in points and the Berserker's in points with 25 goals, 28 assits for 53 points in 50 games. Matthew Forrester led the league in assists with 38 and scored 6 goals for 44 points in 50 games. The line saw some different third wheels used but Clean finished the season with them and was able to score 13 goals and 18 assists for 31 points. Every game this line buzzed with Clean providing the physicality for his fellow line mates to penetrate the goal. Minamino had an amazing season which can be attributed to his line mates and especially his chemistry with Forrester. This line will likely be together again next season as well so it will be interesting to see what kind of totals they can put up next season.

The defensive pairing of Bradley Barkov and Anrijs Asts was the MVP for the Colorado Raptors this year and they did so many great things to keep us in games. Barkov is one of the most elite defenseman in the SMJHL right now and he managed to finish the season with a rating in the mid 70s which is very strong. He ate up tons of minutes and so did his partner Anrijs Asts who did his best to keep up. Both of these guys played over 21 minutes a night and they made everything easier for the rest of our team. Aumy Jr and Bryce Turner were another amazing pair for us and they benefited greatly from the top pairing being so dominate and getting things done against the top players. We have a really strong team in Colorado but it all starts from the back end. Our goalies were very good but I love playing with these defenseman because they are so good at getting me the puck. Our transition game is getting stronger every game and I think we are ready for a big playoff run.

RE: S54 SMJHL PT #6 - MVPs - Mazatt - 06-29-2020

I came in with a plan to shoutout my defensive partner and fellow rookie, Connor Hutton, for the way his play has shaped my ability to play the game and hone my offensive skills. Despite the fact that he has already directed kind words my way, I can't think of anyone else that deserves more priase than him. It would be easy to look at Wags who tied for top scorer in the league, or Frieds who impacts every facet of the game, but I get to play with Hutts night in and night out so it's only fair to give him some praise.

There's the aforementioned 'first goal' of mine which was matched by the first two points of Hutton's career. Of course, that was met by a drought in goal scoring, but also points in general on my end. I've picked up the pace recently and we finished with 15 and 14 points, but honestly, my season goes out to Hutton. When I first got to Carolina, and I scored in game 1, I started to overthink my game. I couldn't handle the puck well and turned it over constantly. I finally had enough when an easy pass was lofted over to me and I bobbled it and the other team got in on a breakaway on Eller and tucked it in. Right after we made it a 1 goal game. I started watching Hutton--man, he knows how to stickhandle. Not only that, but he could break the puck out of our own end, engage in the rush, and pass it around the offensive zone with ease. And I was sitting here like 'shit, I can barely skate it out my own zone!' I started watching him in practice, coming over to ask questions on how he did all that stuff and he showed me. I can't do everything he does yet--he does a lot with the puck--but without him I suck this year. No way around it. We'd be trying to score like it's a PK with me on the ice, but with Hutton not only is he there killing it offensively, he makes everyone around him better. He's just so smart with the puck.

All I can hope for now is that we can continue to develop and mold our games off of each other to help the Kraken win games. It hurts that we might end up on different teams after the upcoming SHL draft, but we're gonna make the most of it down in Carolina unitl then, that's for sure.

RE: S54 SMJHL PT #6 - MVPs - Durden - 06-29-2020

One of the best lines in the SMJHL is the line of Vitek Vitecek, Velveteen Dream, and Jimmy Wagner. The Kraken know that this line is one of the lines that carries the team, making sure there's plenty of goals on the board. Vitecek is a stud on both ends of the ice and makes sure to feed his teammates. This shows up in his 29 assists and his plus 14 rating. Dream also pops up the assists, totaling 28 on the season. He's great in his own end too, with a plus 19 rating.

Jimmy Wagner is the guy who scores the most though. His 24 goals, 29 assists, and 53 points is tied for top in the league. His plus 20 rating is nothing to sneeze at either. When these guys are on the ice you know something magical will happen, and if you're the opposing team, you play your defensive specialists. They're that good.

Hey there, Luffy Richard is here to open your minds about the best-kept secret in Vancouver! Maybe the league, and possibly because I am bad at reading stat lines, but William Hartman and I, the great Luffy Richard, were tops in short-handed points this season. I did most of the passing, and he did most of burying the biscuit so deep in the breadbasket that the baker could never get it out, never! It may have been a rough season, but our penalty kill was not shy in attacking. Next season will only see an increase in this dynamic duos offensive assault. With speed and strength, they proved a bright spot on the shining beacon of under-doggedness that is the mighty Vancouver Whale. This is a statement, not only of wanting that sweet sweet tpe, but of purpose! A declaration that no other penalty killing pair provided as much value in their most valuableness as William "Bill Hart" Hartman and Luffy Richard.

Thank you for coming to my Ted Post.

I was blessed this season to be put on the 1st Power Play line with the likes of Taylor Johansson, Ethan Price, James LeBlond, and Rikard Hammarberg.  They all brought so much scoring presence to the ice that all I had to do was make sure the puck got distributed to any of them and it was a shot or one more pass away from being in the back of the net.  Rikard and Taylor had some practices on the side every so often with me where they'd really drill my passes to get them as precise as both of theirs.  It was also a huge pleasure to watch Ethan whenever he'd get the puck on the power play, he was never afraid to take a shot from anywhere on the ice, and I would've been afraid to be in front of those shots, because he somehow gets some extra zip on those shots.  I'm gonna have to ask what his workout regimen is so I can replicate that next year.  And LeBlond is a great manager at the blue line, keeping the puck distributed and even taking his fair share of shots from a distance.
