New England S55 draft - One season later - Zema - 09-09-2020

5 players were picked by the New England Wolfpack in the S55 draft, with 3 of them coming out of the 1st round. This is how their seasons have been from start to finish.

Timber Alexander Oscarsson, RW @Zema
SMJHL Draft: 21st OA
SHL Draft: 8th OA
Total TPE (2020-09-07): 487
He was a leading offensive player for the Maine Timber this season, more than doubling his point totals from last year going from 18 to 37. The biggest rise in performance was without a doubt his goalscoring ability. From 6 the year before to 17 this season, he was a top 10 scorer for the most part throughout the season playing 1st line minutes on a Maine that had really started getting into their own. As good as he was in the regular season, his playoff performance left a lot to be desired. Only 2 goals and 11 points in 24 games was not great for the sophomore as the finals making surprise team in Maine got knocked out in 6 games to Newfoundland. The biggest drop in performance was without a doubt the power play. A specialist in the regular season netting 15 power play points he completely fell apart in that department in the playoffs, only managing 2 assists. He is still one of the better players in his draft class, looking to take on even more responsibility over in Maine.

Raptors Guðmundur Kristjánsson, RW @Fluw
SMJHL Draft: 5th OA
SHL Draft: 11th OA
Total TPE (2020-09-07): 466
After a measly 8 points in his rookie campaign for the Colorado Raptors, the rise of Guðmundur Kristjánsson was insane. 2 goals might only have become 7, but his 6 assists turned into 28, netting him a total of 35 points. He showed excellence in both the offensive side of the game as well as a really solid defensive performance. In fact, he was one of the premier right wingers in the league when it came to the defensive side. Only Svenson and Flitterwind (1 sec) on the Raptors had more ice-time amongst the forwards than "The God". Sadly for him and the Colorado based team as a whole, these playoffs were a thing to quickly forget about. The Kelowna Knights were deemed to strong of an opponent, and the playmaking sensation from Iceland only finished the post season with 2 points over 6 games.
With Svenson moving on for next season, Gudmundur will be the one stepping into his spot. With his amazing vision and his great understanding of the game he will look to become an even bigger threat than before.

Citadelles Ryan Rieley, LW @Brandon
SMJHL Draft: 34th OA
SHL Draft: 15th OA
Total TPE (2020-09-07): 462
Rieley was originally drafted by the Raptors in the J, but got moved on to Quebec in the expansion draft. He didn't see a big increase in his point or stat totals overall between the seasons, but it was clear he had an overall better season. The newly introduced team to the J with the Citadels put a lot of faith in him in both the offensive and defensive side, and even though he had a tough go around he still managed to put something up. 6 more points, an increase in hits while he took 5 less penalties on a much worse team overall has to be counted as a successful season. Especially for a player who does not rely on getting a ton of points to be useful. His playoff performance stretched for 10 games where he managed an alright 3 points as Quebec only managed one goal over 4 games vs the eventual winners in Newfoundland. For next season, he will be someone to be relied upon to lead this young team further into the post season, as they are looking poised to be competing at a high level very soon.

Battleborn Leonids Balzams, RD @Cyanide
SMJHL Draft: -
SHL Draft: 29th OA
Total TPE (2020-09-07): 406
A 2nd round pick for New England in the last draft, Leonids Balzams had a huge role for Nevada this last season. Averaging 20 minutes a game, he was relied upon for bringing a solid defensive output to this new squad. His point totals have dropped by 3 compared to his rookie season, but there very few arguments that he got worse. He was a leading player on a very young and inexperienced team, and was very solid in his own end to boot. With the responsibility he also became much more disciplined, only having 18 penalties over the course of this season. Playoffs ended up being a very short adventure for Nevada and Leo, as the Kelowna Knights proved too strong of an opposition in the first round. For next season, he will be looking to play an even bigger role as he enters his third season in the league.

Timber Hennesey-Gallchobhar O'McGuiness, LD @the_paytonium
SMJHL Draft: 36th OA
SHL Draft: 40th OA
Total TPE (2020-09-07): 238
Hennesey played only 27 games in his rookie campaign for the Maine Timber managing only two points. New England must've seen something in this young man to draft him as number 40 overall last time around. In his sophomore year he saw himself on the ice almost an equal amount of time on average, but this time over all 50 games. And he had a really solid showing for himself. 17 points when playing on the third pairing is nothing to scuff at for the young man of many names. However, it was frankly not enough for the Timber who decidedly scratched him in favour of Nathan Thomas on the back-end while deploying Konrad Danke as a 4th line Center leaving no room for Hennesey. 0 playoff games in the Cinderella run that ended in game 6 vs Newfoundland in the finals for the Portland based team. With Kalashnikov and MAS going to the SHL and with Windsor retiring due to injuries, there are open spots to be had in Maines top 4. It's up to Hennesey himself to make sure he grabs that chance, before potential rookies gets a hold of it ahead of him. He's not looking to be a leading player, but he is a really solid depth dman to have in the J.

The Future

And that concludes the overview of the 5 draftees New England had. After a very shaky year with both GMs leaving as well as the superstar forward Eko Van Otter getting traded to the eventual challenge cup champions, the team can at least look back on a really good draft in S55. Multiple players looking to take up leading positions in their J teams, while also looking to bring that edge into the Wolfpack when they eventually get promoted. As for this up coming S56 draft, they once again go in with 3 first round picks. 5th OA, 10th OA and 14th OA. A good rise from the 8th, 11th and 15th they had last year. With a really great draft class on the horizon, the New England Wolfpack with @kenvald being the alpha this time around will look to lock down the future of the team. Who will they be picking? What are their needs?  Only time will tell what direction they will take in this draft. But do be certain about one thing - the goal is the cup.
