(GRADED) S58 SMJHL Draft 1st Analysis Deep Dive #1 - ZootTX - 02-08-2021

For my first deep dive, I wanted to take a look at the first round of the recent S58 SMJHL draft. We’ll be examining all twelve players taken in the draft, including their user, position, draft team, home country and TPE claimed from the draft through the first update (using only claimed TPE from their update page at the time of writing, and not including the first PT or rookie survey since recreates cannot claim those.) Without further ado, here they are:

1 -  LD Aleksandrs Balcers, Latvia, user Randominoe, Newfoundland Berserkers, 58 TPE earned
With the first pick of the draft, “New Finland” claimed left defenseman Aleksandrs Balcers. Balcers looks to be the 3rd LD on the Berserkers roster. Balcers hails from Latvia and will be this user’s second player in the SHL.

2 - LW Fedor Sotakov, Russia, user Sota, Colorado Raptors, 57 TPE earned
Using pick #2, Colorado picked Russian Feder Sotakov, who plays left wing. Sotakov has chronicled his time living in America after moving from Russia to prepare for his time in the SHL. Sotakov will fill the 3rd line slot at left wing in the upcoming season. User sota must have been impressive in early scouting to go this early as a new user!

3 - RW KEKW Kekkonen, Finland, user WannabeFinn, Colorado Raptors, 54 TPE earned
Using their second pick of the first round, the Raptors selected Finnish right wing KEKW Kekkonen. Kekkonen will likely be filling the 2nd RW spot on the roster. Additionally, user WBF is a long time league player and SHL GM.

4 - C Ryuuji Kawashima, Japan, user Raven, Anaheim Outlaws, 58 TPE earned
With the 4th pick, the Outlaws claim Japanese center Ryuuji Kawashima. Kawashima will be the 3rd highest TPE center on the team. User Raven is an SHL vet and is also well known in the ISFL.

5 - C Miguel Hefeweizen, Austria, user ZootTX, Maine Timber, 58 TPE earned
No one was more shocked than me when the Timber claimed Miguel Hefeweizen, Austrian center, with the 5th overall pick. Hefezweizen will likely be splitting time with fellow Maine rookie center Maxime Allard in the 2nd/3rd spot in the lineup. While user ZootTX is new to the SHL, he has sim experience in other leagues.

6 - RD Ethan Bouchard, Sweden, user Fever95, St. Louis Scarecrows, 57 TPE earned
With pick 6 of the draft, the Scarecrows take right defenseman Ethan Bouchard. Bouchard, a Swede, looks like the 2nd LD on the Scarecrow’s roster. User Fever95 is a veteran SHL player and GM.

7 - RD Angus McFife XVIII, Great Britain, user micool132, Colorado Raptors, 57 TPE earned
With their last pick of the first round (finally) the Raptors take British right defenseman Angus McFife XVIII. McFife looks to slot in as the team’s 3rd LD to start off the season. User micool 132 is a SHL vet with multiple players under their belt.

8 - C Sanzhar Molochtovoi, Azerbaijan, user Avakael, Detroit Falcons, 53 TPE earned
Unsurprisingly, the Falcons use the rounds 8th pick to bring Azerbaijani center Molochtovoi to Detroit. Detroit currently has a total of 7 centers on their roster, so maybe they are going to run an all-center team? Regardless, user Avakael is a longtime vet of the SHL.

9 - RW Alexis Saint-Michel, Canada, user KenitohMenara, Vancouver Whales, 56 TPE earned
With the 9th pick, the Whalers bring back Canadian right wing Saint-Michel. Saint-Michel will be the 2nd of 4 right wings on their roster. User KenitohMenara has experience in the SHL as well as a stint in the ISFL.

10 - RW Shane Duffy Jr., Ireland, user LB3737, Quebec City Citadelles, 53 TPE
With 5 other right wings on their roster, Quebec City must have liked what they saw in Ireland’s Duffy, Jr. Duffy will apparently be undergoing conditioning to like the Citadelles logo more after he ranked theirs 5/12 prior to the draft. Quebec appears to be hoarding RWs, with a total of 7 on their roster. User LB3737 is a new user in the SHL, but has experience in the ISFL.

11 - C Daud Ramza, Great Britain, user Blasoon, Carolina Kraken, 37 TPE
British center Ramza will go back to Carolina with the 11th pick of the draft. Even if the Kraken hadn’t needed a 3rd center to round out their roster, seeing user Blasoon, a former Kraken GM, go here was no surprise. Bassoon is an experienced sim leaguer, with extensive ISFL experience where he is also a GM.

12 - RD Jay Sink, Great Britain, user Memento Mori, Anchorage Armada, 51 TPE
Rounding out the first round of the draft, right defenseman Jay Sink, of Great Britain, goes to the Anchorage Armada. Although he’ll start the season as the 3rd RD on their roster, he’ll likely move up to the second line if he continues to earn at this pace. Finally, user Mori is yet another ISFL vet to join the SHL and be drafted first round (6 in total this draft!)

In conclusion, this draft saw 4 each of centers, wingers, and defensemen taken, from a total of 10 different countries. Picks were distributed 5 and 5 for new users versus users who had previously created a SHL player, including several SHL GMs. Currently, teams should be feeling great about their first round picks as all appear to be active and earning near max. The one outlier is Kraken center Ramza, who simply appears to not have claimed their coaching yet for the season.

@ZootTX Approved! +5 TPE.
