What have changed in past 8 seasons in IIHF? - st4rface - 10-19-2021

Some people think STHS era was better, some thinks the opposite. Long story short - newcomers will say that STHS was pretty much random and based on luck and not builds, but oldheads will understand that STHS had it owns feeling and it was a great simtool. Of course, mostly these opinions will apply. However, I wanted to make a small media about how things have changed in past 8 seasons in IIHF (FHM era). As we all know, players progress, regress, retires and then new ones joins. It's the circle of SHL. What does have changed in past 8 seasons? Let's take a look!

IIHF of S53 ended something like this:
1. Canada - 11 wins and 1 overtime loss
2. United States of America - 11 wins and 1 loss (gold medal)
3. Great Britain - 9 wins and 3 losses
4. Czechia - 7 wins, 3 losses and 2 overtime losses (silver medal)
5. Germany - 7 wins, 4 losses and 1 overtime loss
6. Sweden - 6 wins and 6 losses
7. Ireland - 5 wins, 6 losses and 1 overtime loss
8. Austria - 5 wins and 7 losses
9. Switzerland - 5 wins, 6 losses and 1 overtime loss
10. Norway - 5 wins and 7 losses
11. Russia - 4 wins and 8 losses
12. Finland - 4 wins and 8 losses
13. Latvia - 3 wins, 8 losses and 1 overtime loss
14. Japan - 2 wins and 10 losses

Next couple of seasons were were pretty much a domination of Canada and Great Britain being runners up. I didn't include bronze medals, because I wanted to talk just about most important medals - gold and silver.

S53 - United States of America wins gold, Czechia wins silver
S54 - Canada wins gold, Great Britain wins silver
S55 - Great Britain wins gold, Japan wins silver
S56 - Canada wins gold, Great Britain wins silver
S57 - Canada wins gold, Great Britain wins silver
S58 - Canada wins gold, Great Britain wins silver
S59 - Japan wins gold, Czechia wins silver
S60 - Japan wins gold, Great Britain wins silver

In these past 8 seasons:
- Canada has won 4 gold medals
- Great Britain has won 1 gold medal and 5 silver medals
- Japan has won 2 gold medals and 1 silver medal
- Czechia has won 2 silver medals
- United States of America has won 1 gold medal

As we see, IIHF is pretty similar to SHL. SHL has Hamilton Steelhawks who are dominating the entire league and winning a cup after cup - just like Canada in IIHF. Great Britain is like Buffalo Stampede which always are dominating regular tournament and then ending up in Finals, but losing and only rarely winning (hurts to say it as a Stampede player). Japan, Czechia and United States of America are these few teams who rarely shows up and tries to steal some of the spotlight. As we see, only five nations in past 8 seasons have been able to make it to the Finals.

However, what does have changed since S53? Let's take a look at this seasons standings in IIHF and how does Play-Offs picture are looking like.

1. Great Britain - 11 wins and 1 loss (TOP4)
2. Canada - 10 wins and 2 losses (TOP4)
3. Finland - 9 wins and 3 losses (TOP4)
4. Sweden - 9 wins and 3 losses
5. Japan - 6 wins, 4 losses and 2 overtime losses (TOP4)
6. Switzerland - 6 wins, 3 losses and 3 overtime losses
7. Norway - 6 wins, 4 wins and 2 overtime losses
8. United States of America - 6 wins and 6 losses
9. Germany - 5 wins, 6 losses and 1 overtime losses
10. Austria - 5 wins and 7 losses
11. Russia - 4 wins and 8 losses
12. Ireland - 4 wins and 8 losses
13. Czechia - 3 wins and 9 losses
14. Latvia - 0 wins, 10 losses and 2 overtime losses

Canada - Canada - still doing great
As we see, Canada is still dominating IIHF after these 8 seasons - just like in real life. It's pretty obvious that this country is one of the best in the entire IIHF. In these past 8 seasons they have made Finals four times and got four gold medals. They are in TOP4 this season too.

Usa - United States of America - fell down a bit, but still a solid nation
USA had a gold medal in S53, but since that - no Finals appearances. This season they made Quarter-Finals, but lost in them versus Great Britain 2:3. I guess, it's weird to see USA perform that bad in IIHF, because in real life they are doing well, but they are still doing kinda solid. 8th place in regular tournament from all countries. Average tam lately.

Uk - Great Britain - they are just like Chick Hicks from Cars movie
Almost always second. Amazing country which is doing solid in IIHF (not in real life though). 1 gold and 5 silvers in past 8 seasons. However, this nation is still doing incredibly good. Ending in TOP4 this season aswell.

Czechia - Czechia - fell down a lot
Czechia had silver in S59, but now they are down bad. Just 3 wins and at the bottom of the entire IIHF (only Latvia is worse). Can they get back up? Of course, but the question is - when? Best of the luck to them.

Germany - Germany - fell down a bit
Germany was an average nation and they still are. They just have felt down a bit in past couple seasons and are just behind the Play-Offs picture. They need couple of seasons and I'm sure they will be back in TOP8. Didn't qualify for Quarter-Finals this season, but will get back stronger soon, I think.

Sweden - Sweden - got a bit better
Sweden are one of the few teams who have gotten better. They were already TOP 8 team back then and now they are even better (at least in regular season). In Play-Offs they lost in Quarter-Finals in very hard and close game versus Finland.

Ireland - Ireland - fell down kinda a lot
From TOP8 team to the bottom of standings. It ain't easy for Irish players lately and we all can see it in the standings. Can they get back stronger? Hard to say. This isn't that nation where everyone wants to play. Maybe someday, but I can't see it happen in further few seasons.

Austria - Austria - fell down a bit
Austria were a good team a long time ago, but now they are just behind Play-Offs picture. They are always that one team which is fighting for Quarter-Finals, but rarely gets there since S53. Needs to work hard with getting new players to their system and having a stronger roster.

Switzerland - Switzerland - got a bit better
Switzerland have gotten a bit better in past 8 seasons. They made Quarter-Finals this season, but ''dream season'' ended up quickly, because they played against Japan and lost. Needs to get stronger and then they can try to make a push to get some medals.

Norway - Norway - got a bit better
Norway is a similar nation to Switzerland. They got a bit better in past 8 seasons and are just similar to them. Norway made Quarter-Finals this season aswell (just like Switzerland), but they went versus a hard opponent once again - versus Canada and lost.

Russia - Russia - kinda the same
Russia is one of the few teams who have played the same past eigth seasons. Usually getting 4 wins and 8 losses in a tournament and not getting even close to a Play-Offs zone. That's mostly because there aren't a lot of Russians in this league, but I think this nation will definitely become much stronger. They have a lot of potential!

Finland - Finland - got much better
From the bottom standings to the top. Finland got their last medal in S44 and it was just a bronze. Now they are back in the TOP4 and will go up against Great Britain in Semi-Finals. Important to mention that Finland were the only team which one in the regular tournament won versus Great Britain. Will it repeat? As a player who plays for Finland, I'm happy that our nation is doing kinda well again.

Latvia - Latvia - still down bad
Since I'm a Latvian, some of them always after few seasons tries to message me and tries to recruit me to join them. And they're always so confident that they will win it all, haha. However, they still are kinda bad. Won't cuss or say anything bad, but they went from 3 wins in the entire tournament to not evening winning a one game. Kinda sad to see a bad team to even getting worse, but that's their bussiness. Good luck to them

Japan - Japan - got much better
Finland is a similar story to Finland, but more confident team. Got to the top straight from the bottom. 2 gold medals and 1 silver medal in past 8 seasons and they're in TOP4 this season again. Surprising to see it, because Japan isn't a hockey nation in real life and members in this league from Japan isn't very much either. I asume there are plenty players who wanted more ice time and some anime fans, maybe. However, they are incredibely good now.

As we see, some nations have gotten better, some have gotten worse, but some stayed the same. Which nation will dominate next 8 seasons? I'm pretty sure that Canada and United Kingdom will keep getting medals. The question is, which nations now will be these nations who are underdogs and fighting with sweats for some medals. Will be interesting to see which countries will be able to go higher in standings in the next couple of seasons. Best of the luck to all players in new seasons and last four countries in the IIHF medals games.
