Since the Anchorage Armada drafted him with the thirteenth overall pick in the season 61 of the SMJHL draft, Spack Jarrow has been bestowed with the captaincy of the team, won the Armada Leadership Award, recruited by Team Switzerland in the IIHF, and created the fastest growing alcoholic branding empire on the planet.

It wasn't immediately evident that Jarrow would be as successful as he has become when the Anchorage team selected him in the draft. At the time he was an unknown player from one of the most unusual places that a hockey player can come from. Tortuga of the Caribbean Islands. This odd match-up turned out to be a perfect fit for both the team and the player.

While the accolades quickly followed him on the ice, it was his achievements off of it that really defined who he was and what he could become. Jarrow's entrepreneurial spirit exploded as energetically as his hockey career as his venture into marketing his own rum was successful beyond imagination. It provided him with a large fortune and powerful connections.

Jarrow didn't bury that treasure he made though. No, instead he spent it on the most expensive private ship ever commissioned. A monstrous 439 foot, 5 masted, 42 sail ship happily titled "Treasure Pleasure" which holds the record for the largest sail ship ever constructed (pictured below).

Being the largest ship ever built isn't the only record it holds as it is also the only ship to have a fully functioning ice-skating rink which provides Jarrow the ability to practice even when not on land. It is his home and when not practicing at the arena, you can find him enjoying the pleasures that a ship of that size has to offer.

The success of Captain Jarrow's Rum landed Spack on one of our 30 Under 30 covers—giving us chance to sit down with him and ask him 8 questions. The interview has been edited and condensed.

Q&A

Quote:1. Why start an alcohol brand?
I signed my rookie contract with Anchorage and realized I need to stock up on some rum. So I purchased a large order from the Tortuga Brewing Company. Shortly after, they approached me about starring in an ad campaign for their company. That sounded boring so after some discussions back and forth we came up with the idea to form a partnership for my own branded rum. From that moment sprang the Captain Jarrow's Rum brand.

Quote:2. Is this something you've wanted for a long time?
Yes absolutely. I started drinking when I was a small lad working on merchant vessels. I knew immediately that I wanted rum in my life and I would do anything to make that happen. It has been the drive behind my life of pirating. To find enough treasure to play hockey and own my own brewery.

I find myself spending a lot of time with the rum. I like to do my stretching and meditating with the barrels (see picture below). It brings me great inner-peace being surrounded by all that wonderful rum.

Quote:3. You spent a lot of your fortune on the Treasure Pleasure. Why spend that much money on a boat?
It's actually a "ship".

My life is on the water whether it be solid or liquid. I feel at home there. Living on the ship is the best of both worlds and it was worth every gold coin spent. While others are living in houses, I can go on my ship and travel anywhere on the open water while still being at home.

However. There was... there was a... umm... a problem. Nobody had ever put a functioning ice rink on a ship before and there were complications. It is unfortunate that we didn't foresee the problem of the motion of the waves when skating on ice.

In the end the sprained ankle wasn't so bad but the broken pinky finger hurt a lot but the ship designer assures me that he can add hydraulic stabilizing shocks next off-season so that it won't be a problem in the future.

Quote:4. Do you think that "training injury" will have any impact on your status for the SHL draft and whether a team picks you or not?
No. With the wealth I've amassed came incredible power. I no longer am at the whim of the GM's of the league. When I get picked it will be because I chose that team, not because they chose me. I'm not going to let some land-lover try and dry dock me. No no no. I will go where I want, when I want. You can be sure of that.

Quote:5. So you already know what team you will be playing for in the SHL before the draft?
Yes, I already have the team picked out. They are not aware yet but I'll tell them to draft me when the time comes.

Quote:6. Are you not concerned that the league might step in and try and stop you?
*chuckles* Maybe you don't know how much money I actually have?

No. They won't do anything about it. Trust me.

Quote:7. How do you think your new teammates will react to you demanding your way onto a team?
"Demand" makes it sound like I am giving an ultimatum which is absolutely not the case. There is no either/or here. Sometimes it just be and this is one of those times. It just be. I'm sure my teammates will understand the situation and be excited to be a part of the Spack Jarrow experience but I am not unreasonable. If anyone has a problem I'm sure we can find a solution on another team.

Quote:8. With the kind of wealth you have made, do you think you might retire early from hockey? What is your plans for the future?
No, I do not plan on retiring as hockey will always be a big part of my life. Having the money gives me the power to control my own future. As long as I can skate, I will be playing hockey.

Retiring? No. Buying a team? Maybe. Buying the whole damn league? A possibility. We will see.

ps - I am not 100% sure if this counts as draft media but I marked it that way just in case.
