Double Media Week - First Half Round One Draft Reaction - Tesla - 05-10-2022

Hello and good time appropriate greeting dear readers of the SMJHL Media Section! Today I come to you with the intent of recapping the draft to the best of my admittedly limited abilities in this area. I confess upfront I am mostly here for 2x media, but also here as someone who has not learned much about the draft from osmosis so figured watching the stream would be a good way to go about adding to my knowledge of the league proper. It could not hurt at least and so this is going to be a sort of live reaction to the recent SMJHL Draft Stream that happened a few days ago. Hope you enjoy it!

Opening observation is that I did not know about the brand refresh to the Yukon Malamutes, but I can say that I love it! Brilliant idea to start fresh after everything I would say. Now after a slight hiccup the first pick is in and it is center Oles Kobliska who is super low on the TPE Tracker as they have not been updated, but a deeper dive reveals they are sitting at a solid 220 TPE. Combined with their massive nine figure bank account that guarantees training and coaching will not be a problem for the duration of their stay in the J and I think this is a fine pick to make for the pseudo fledgling franchise.

I want to say I appreciate the honesty about handling the stream as sometimes things just go wrong despite our best efforts, and so I appreciate the gentle handling of it. Now the second pick of the draft being a literal empty void that still has 13 passing and 12 puckhandling is not something I expected to see! Also made more surprising is their weaknesses are two stats at a strong 9 rather than minimum. I would love to find out if this person just built the ultimate all-rounder, but unfortunately no matching records found for empty void after searching for them on the TPE Tracker. Okay they are actually Edge Rocks a first generation who did indeed go with an all around averaged build with minimum attributes of 8 in fighting, aggression, and bravery. Not sure if that is a good build or not, however I can say that I dig the style regardless! Also after a bit of additional deep diving they are sitting at 232 TPE and so a bit of a leg up on first overall which as a first gen is worthy of some applause in my book.

Third on the clock and the quickest pick thus far in terms of presentation is right wing Otis Boudreaux first gen to the Citadelles! Okay looking through a deeper dive I want to say that I love the amount of media they have made already as a first gen player. (I know I am also first gen myself, but only kind of sort of in the grand scheme of things.) Media equals excitement and excitement is worth more than all the TPE you can legally get after the regression changes. Also although his update page is a bit sparse on details it does list a 50+ TPE gain so not far behind the top of the pack in that regard. Great grab by QCC here I would say as someone with borderline zero idea of what they are doing.

Pick four from Anchorage comes in after a bit of a quiet break and it is right defense Philippe-Eko Eel going to Anchorage. Now for everyone else I had to do a bit of deep diving to provide any real commentary, however I know Hotdog from another league as they were a superstar on a minors team I am heavily associated with elsewhere. He is a sandwich, but he is not an issue. I interacted with him plenty courtesy of our connection there and given this I believe is his main league I am quite comfortable saying he is a superb selection. Also he is fantastic on Twitter where you can make up to 60% of your training costs with only a half dozen posts a week!

If I am understanding the jingly noise right that it signifies the pick is in then I can say I like it. Just strange enough to my unfamiliar with drafts ears to be enticing. Pick number five sees the Scarecrows select left defense Tommi Koivu whose name immediately reminds me of the Kavu from Magic: The Gathering. Doing a deep dive they have twenty million in cash which is enough to comfortably handle training for their time in the J at least. They are also sitting at 230 TPE which is the highest of all the draftees so far. Also have fifteen stamina in their current update which I have been told is aces when it comes to the J and so I think this is a strong selection for the Scarecrows. Also also I somehow missed in my dive that they are a GM so that probably secures them as a stronger selection, however I have no idea as to whether that leads to a quicker call up or not in this league. Going to just stand by this being a good choice.

Pretty sure the jingly noise is used to signify that a new pick is in. Maine Timber with pick six grab left defense Emil Egli whose user TheGreatToeJam is a first gen with a name that brings to mind Toe Jam and Earl; so even before I do any additional deep diving into them I give this pick a six out of six stars. Also have to say a defender having their weakness be faceoffs leaves me confused, however I am not going to take the time to actually question it as I don't have that much time. Now doing the deep dive into this I have to say love seeing even more media as I do not normally look there for insert good excuse here, but I do know from experience that media means good things in general. My silly reason for rating him a superstar aside this seems like a fine choice looking at his media, and especially when you look at his update thread which has him tied for first thus far at a terrific 230 TPE. Six picks in and all smart moves based on my metrics made without a single scouting note. Also as an additional note I love that the host agreed with me on the username front and so I will also agree with them that sometimes usernames are more enjoyable than player names.

Halfway through round one we get to center Julian Eaglesong going to the Carolina Kraken. Now this is another user I am familiar with as we are teammates in another league and I can say confidently that this is a great selection. I've shared a few locker rooms with Moosey over the seasons and he has been exceptional in all of them. His bank balance is lower than I would expect based on experience, but is still plenty big enough to look at here. No recent media to comment about, however his latest update puts him at 230 TPE which is good for top tier in this class thus far. Combine that with his five star personality and I am not at all surprised to see him go in the top half of the class.

Now my initial plan was to do the first round, but as my body is failing me at the moment I am going to call it here and see if I can do the rest tomorrow. Either way I thank you for accompanying me on this look at the draft and I hope you have a delightful day!
