(GRADED) Deep dive #2- Figuring out your first draft and what comes afterwards - SloppyPainter - 10-29-2022 So you’ve decided to join the SHL and end up dedicating way more time to it than you originally thought? (You will) Well step on board and I will tell you what to expect before the draft! Part one: Scouting. Alright, so near the draft you will most likely have a whole host of people reach out to you via the site or via discord asking you questions and just generally wanting to get to know you. Some common questions are: “How active are you planning to be?”, “Is there anything about the site that is confusing you?”, and “What hobbies are you interested in or doing?” Now, as a quick side note D&D and board games are a pretty big thing here, so if you like that sort of thing you can hopefully find other people to join you! As you are asked questions and such, don’t stress, this isn’t like you’re interviewing for a job, a lot of GMs, especially at the SMJHL level, are just looking for fun and enjoyable people to be around! Part two: the draft. So the draft is today! I what can you do on that day? Absolutely nothing but what you usually do, just sit tight and wait to see where you get drafted! You should get an invite to your new teams locker room and be able to interact and say hi to all of your new friends and teammates! Part three: settling in You have now probably settled into to your new locker room and have talked to your new teammates, now it’s time to grind TPE and embed yourself way to deep into the SHL community! There’s actually servers that branch off of the SHL dedicated to board games and video games, so if you have tabletop simulator, come on down! You can chat in the, mostly dead, site community chats or go to discord for the real fun and active locker rooms! I would personally recommend being active on your own classes discord as it’s a great place to get advice, make new friends, and gain general info. Maybe you want to apply for a gm position in the IIHF to get you set down the path to being a gm yourself. Your own rookie chat is probably the best place to find those things. Something else that can be very helpful in getting on your way to being a GM is asking your GM if there’s anything you can help with on the team, for example scouting. If you want to just make more money, get a job! There’s plenty of openings at any point that you can take! Some are more high effort than some so make sure you ask someone what the job includes before you take it. You can also get a very good look into what goes on behind the scenes by getting a job, there’s even a head office internship! One last thing, run your updates by your GM before making them, they’ll Haley you achieve the play you truly want. That’s it! You are ready to navigate the SHL by yourself now! But with help from friends in the community and your GM.
