(GRADED) Deep Dive # 2 - A Carpet Rookie Season Comparison - Carpy48 - 02-19-2023

I'm going to compare Rhett Carpet's rookie season in the SMJHL (season 69) to his father's rookie season all the way back in season 46. Harry Carpet was drafted 41st overall in the fifth round while Rhett Carpet was drafted fifth overall in the first round. Technically they were both drafted and later both played for the same team/franchise, but there are huge differences. Let's start with what has changed first and then go a little more into detail. I won't look at aspects like TPE cap that has changed over the years because that's not important yet for rookies.

1) The team name and location. Back in season 46 the franchise was known as the Lethbridge Lions Lions , an expansion team going into their second season, located in Lethbridge as the name implies. Now they are called the Newfoundland Berserkers Berserkers after rebranding/relocating in season 53.
2) Success. The Lions never had any success in their short time in the J, never making it very far in the playoffs. When Harry Carpet played for them he even managed to break the young franchise's playoffs win record with only 6 wins in season 48. The Berserkers however won a total of five Four Star Cups already and used to be one of the strongest teams and thus also most hated around the SMJHL.
3) Sim engine. Not unimportant is the fact that season 46 still happened when STHS was used while the current sim engine is FHM 8. We all know that goalie TPE doesn't matter in FHM, but did it matter in STHS?
4) Games per season and teams. In Season 46 a season had 50 games, now it's 66 games in the regular season. We also have 14 teams now while it was only 10 teams back then. There also was only one division back then.

Now let's look at season 46.

Harry Carpet's stats:
GP: 14 (5-6-2), 0.891 SV%, 2.59 GAA, SO: 1

Lethbridge Lions overall stats: 26-21-3. Lethbridge finished the season 5th in the standings with 55 points.

Some interesting facts:
- had his first win after starting 8 games
- had his first shutout in the second last game of the regular season
- started 26% of the team's regular season games, but only had 19% of their wins

Now in comparison, let's look at season 69.

Rhett Carpet's stats:
GP: 22 (14-6-2), 0.897 SV%, 2.15 GAA, SO: 4

Newfoundland overall stats: 41-23-2. Newfoundland finished the season 5th overall with 84 points.

Also some facts:
- his first game ever was also his first win
- had his first shutout already in his 4th game and four in total
- lead all (backup) goalies in GAA.

What does this tell us in the end? In FHM it almost doesn't matter which goalie you start, they both get the same results. The team's overall performance matters more. But none of that is really new to us. Overall we can see that Rhett had a better rookie season than Harry (having more wins than losses at least), but so much depends on the team and the sim engine that we can't really compare these two. It was fun doing it anyway Smile
