[2x Team Spotlight] Edmonton Blizzard's draft numbers - FuriousChicken - 02-07-2024 o the team spotlight weeks have started, and first off is the Edmonton Blizzards. So let’s look at where their drafts have come from in recent seasons. As this is the first article I made of this kind first off some information: * Starting from the S62 SHL draft, this is because the S61 SJHML draft is the first one with the 14 teams we know (outside of the Anaheim Outlaws => Yukon Malamutes rebrand). * The Anaheim Outlaws and Yukon Malamutes will be seen as 1 team. * If a player is not in the portal, the player is not included * I use the drafted by that is seen in the portal, not looking at if the player switched J-team before the SHL draft (or switched SHL team before being called up for that matter). If the player was not drafted (for example a player going through the waiver) the first team found in the SJHML index is used, if this is also not linked, the Portal history will be used to go back to the originally assigned value for the SJHML team. So let’s get on with the Edmonton Blizzard, which will not be the biggest one that is gonna be made. First of the total number of draftees for EDM is 29, however of these 29, 8 are not in the portal anymore, meaning the 29 number goes down to 21 for the where did they come from section of the article. First off let’s look at the season the players were drafted, immediately obvious is that in recent times EDM have not drafted a lot of players, not drafting at all since S71, and even back then only having 2 picks. Before that they drafted a lot more regularly, drafting 3 players in S69, 2 in S68, 3 in S67, 4 in S66, 5 in S65, 3 in S64, 1 in S63, and finally 4 in S62. Looking at the rounds these picks occurred in we see a high amount of first round picks, compared to the rest. With 17 of their 29 picks coming in the first round. The 2nd round contains 5 picks, while the 3rd round contains 6, with the final pick being a 4th round pick, which they did once. Now onto which team did the players that were drafted come from. Like said earlier 9 players are not in the portal anymore, and will not be taken into account for the rest of this article. First off with this part is which position was drafted the most by EDM, from their 19 draftees, 2 were goalies, 4 were defenders, and all 4 on the left side, the other 15 were forwards, split equally between the sides, with 5 being RW, 5 being LW, and 5 being C. First off a little split between waiver wire players, and players who were in the SJHML draft itself, for EDM this is a pretty big difference, with 19/21 players coming from the J-draft, with only 2 following later on with the waiver wire, a fun fact however is that both of these players joined in S69. Now onto the players from the J-draft. First off once again it is obvious that a lot of these were first round picks back then, with 12/19 players being in the 1st round of the J-draft, the other 7 involve 5 2nd round picks, 1, 3rd round pick, and 1, 4th round pick. Now onto which teams did they actually come from. Here it is quickly visible that EDM doesn’t have a big preference for any team in the J-league, apart from Quebec City Citadelles, drafting 4 of their 21 players from them, however this is mostly in S64/S65, with only 1 player (S67) coming in a later season. The Yukon Malamutes (/Anaheim Outlaws) are also a decently common team, with 3 of EDM’s draftees coming from there, and in this case also more split out over the seasons. Other teams with draftees going to EDM include the Regina Elk (2), Carolina Kraken (2), Newfoundland Berserkers (2), Anchorage Armada (2), Maine Timber (2), Nevada Battleborn (1), St. Louis Scarecrows (1), Colorado Raptors (1), and finally the Detroit Falcons (1). (Is included with the graph at the end) That was it for Edmonton’s draftees, not the biggest article, as EDM hasn’t drafted that many players in the more recent SHL history. Now at the end, some nice graphs to see the stats in more detail: First off the which team did they come from graph. For now this only includes EDM, but the plan is to eventually have these show all the teams. [775 Words and some graphs, do they count?] RE: [2x Team Spotlight] Edmonton Blizzard's draft numbers - Evok - 02-07-2024 QCC on top that's all i got from this article |
