RE: S77 SMJHL PT #2 Season Preview - Allegiant - 06-20-2024

At 10-10-2, it's no secret that the Newfoundland Berserkers are struggling. While they've had a better time over the past week or so, notching some impressive wins in their hunt for the playoffs, most generally agree that it's a rebuilding year for the team: a time to take stock of what they have, what they will have, and how to translate that towards those narrow winning windows that the SMJHL is known for.

Their offense, their defense, their special teams: everything about them is 'middling.' It's for that reason that the three players we have to look at as key to their success are those who stand above the rest: the talents who truly elevate a team that should probably he ranked even lower into playoff contention.

Those names are Jason Warwaha, whose offensive touch has allowed him to lead the team with 16 goals and 16 assists, including 7 goals on the powerplay alone. He's an all-out, offensive player with a bit of a physical edge to him, and if the team finds success in the playoffs, he's going to be a key contributor if not the key contributor.

Next up has to be Alexel Kamensky, whose 12 goals and 18 assists on the wing paint him as the top right winger on the team. He's largely played the role of Warwaha's wing-man up until this point, and that's allowed him to make use of his extremely impressive offensive fundamentals to open up the game for Warwaha.

Finally, we'll look at a young player: Weston Windsor. with 5 goals and 12 assists for 17 points in 17 games, Weston has become one of the team's top centers in short order. He isn't nearly as talented as the other two, but he's one of the fastest skaters on the team, and his basic counter-attacking game rounds out a top trio of forwards that really need to light the lamp to make up for how shallow the rest of the roster can seem. It's a young team -- but with a little luck, it could pull something special out this year.

That something special might just be a playoff appearance, but when you're working your way up -- every game of playoff experience counts.

The Quebec City Citadelles are fresh off a Four-Star Cup win, but many of the players from that roster are being called up as a result. Quebec lost eight 425-capped players, and have been working to replace them, preferably with young players who will be centrepieces of the team in the future, but with eight spots to fill sometimes any warm body will do. In the draft, the Citadelles were able to pick up five promising prospects, and filled in the rest of the gaps with talented free agents, all while keeping an eye on the waiver wire. With so much turnover in the roster, Quebec City were expected to have a down year, however so far they've exceeded expectations. Right now the Quebec City Citadelles are sitting at 5th in the league with a record of 17-13-0, for a total of 34 points in 30 games. Much of this success can be attributed to SMJHL veteran players Scape Goat, Wyatt King, Anna Skovgaard, 3WW Wingmate-Roc, Supah Dupah, Fredrik Gronlund, and of course Song Ju-gong.

The SMJHL season is about to start??? My gosh I didn't realize that these first 30 games are for nothing Tongue. Taking a look at the Vancouver Whalers, they are 16-10-4 on the season so far. This places them solidly at 4th in the standings. However, taking a look at the goal differential, it seems the Whalers are in the middle of the pack. With that, we are looking to compete and potentially upset some higher teams. With that, our key contributors would definitely have to be (1) NoNo Jo who is a veteran presence on the team, leading the team as captain and first line center. Our next key contributor comes from the backend, but the way back end in (2) Masked Stanger. The defensive core is good, but needs another season so it's up to Masked Stanger to keep them into games. Lastly, the last key to success would be for (3) MattyJ (and Olafur Altason) to gel will with the new team and especially the young rookie Ville Sato-Maki.

After tough loss in the finals last season Timber is looking stronger than ever. Maine's roster is really deep and there is a lots of players who could really be the difference makers. Lets start with the obvious ones. The Lavoie siblings are the heart of this team. In their 4th year in the juniors they got the expirience to lead this team to glory and of course their exceptional skills. Edouard is the center and is top playmaker in this league. Mia on the other hand is a high level scorer with a incredible speed which makes their abilities really compliment each other. Expect lots of points from them.

We cant forget about the goalies tho. They are real difference makers in this sport. And Maine got themselves a real stopper. As the Lavoie twins Shotty McStopper is a veteran in the smjhl. With a amazing combination of glove hand, positioning and reflexes McStopper is top top goalie in smjhl. If you want to win you need to have a good keeper and McStopper is that what a winning team needs.

Newfoundland Berserkers have hovered around a .500 win rate. This isn’t an ideal score for a team looking to compete but they have time to turn it around with excellent pieces to build around. Newcomers Jett Labyrinth, Leo Finnegan and Weston Windsor have great potential and continue to grow week after week. Surrounding superstars like Warwaha and Kamensky with young talent is a great strategy for Newfoundland. Weston and Jett offer depth up front under the star forwards. Meanwhile Leo Finnegan plays 21 minutes a game on the second pairing. He hopes to contribute more offensively if Newfoundland can make it to the play offs. Weston provides strong skating ability and offensive IQ for the team while Jett has been piling up points. Jett is more of an all around player being reliable in all three zones. The three young players need to step up and support the veteran Zerkers and bring a 4 star cup back to the island of newfoundland.

When starting the talk about the Ottawa Highlanders, you have to begin with three very important players for the team. These players are Benji Hockiwi, Pique Boo, and Hockey Player. These players have set the tone early for the Highlanders team with electric offense on every shift and been a consistent threat each time on the ice. Hockiwi is currently sitting 5th in points in the league and has helped set up teammates for success consistently, showcasing his exceptional playmaking abilities. Meanwhile, Hockey Player and Pique Boo have feasted on mediocre defenses all season long, racking up goals and creating numerous scoring opportunities. Their chemistry and dynamic play style have been pivotal in driving the Highlanders' offensive success. With great offensive firepower and a decently good, but young, defensive corps, the Ottawa Highlanders look like a team that can really make a splash. Their ability to blend youthful energy with strategic gameplay has made them a formidable force, poised for a deep run in the playoffs. The team's resilience and determination are evident in their consistent performance, making them a fan favorite and a feared competitor in the league.

Figgy was never shy about admitting it - this was going to be a rebuilding year, and a rebuilding year it has been. The Anchorage Armada currently sit at an unenviable 10-19-1 record, not a single skater boasting a CORSI% above 50.

Key to turning out around will be the performance of the Big 4, the veterans over 400 TPE who will have to carry this very green team, if they're going to get anywhere at all.

Jesus Murphy leads the team in goals like, points and CORSI% for. Despite, that, Anchorage needs better than a -2 from the players needed to carry the team.

Lyle Odelein IV is second on the team in both goals and points, and boasts a positive +/-. His production will need to come up over a point per game, though, to compensate for the rest of the team's inexperience.

Muon Collider is third on the team in scoring, but only shooting at 8.5%, resulting in 5 goals in 30 games. Not enough from a veteran so heavily depended upon.

Sébastien Levesque has been used in a defensive role and blocked shots like a madman, but he'll need to work on staying out of the box to help his team out.

With several matchdays in, one thing is now clear for Kelowna: We are looking at a better season already. We have broken our record from last season by this day and look to add many more wins in the following matches leading up to what could be a decent playoff spot.
So far the offense has been firing on all cylinders, regularily outshooting the opponent. However we have to fine-tune our finishing as more shots didn't necessarily equate more goals over the opposition.
That brings me to our most crucial position, which is the goalkeeping. While the stats for Gino are decent, especially for a rookie, there needs to be an improvement in regard to the Save% since the opposition, while heavily outshot still manages to snag wins through better finishing, which will always at least partially the Goalie's fault. Now our defense is also nearly an all-rookie squad so there will most probably be a lot of improvement over the next J seasons, as long as everybody stays active and engaged.

Well half way through the regular season right now and sitting at a measly 30 points (14-17-2) the Colorado Raptors have struggled. After a very hot start, things have cooled at a drastic rate. There are ways to turn it around though, one being their top two fourth-year players breaking out more than they have. Andrade La Sombra and Pinli Switchbang have had decent starts, but I believe there needs to be more expected of them as the season progresses. These two veterans need to pick it up and take the team on their back. Additionally, fourth-year goaltender Herman Stahl really needs to break out. He is at massive risk of losing his starting job to second-year goaltender Jokull Magnusson. Stahl’s current 3.80 goals-against average and .880 save percentage is just not good enough to sustain any success. If their fourth year players can step up, along with some contributions from their stellar rookies, the Raptors might be fighting for more very soon.

The Detroit Falcons, currently holding a record of 15-12-3, have emerged as a notable surprise this season, especially considering their position as second-last in the latest power rankings. Despite initial expectations, the Falcons have showcased a commendable performance with a strong goal differential of +12 and a robust defensive strategy. Impressively, they have allowed only 90 goals thus far, placing them second in the league standings, just behind Regina. Should the Falcons' offensive capabilities elevate in the upcoming games, there is a strong possibility of witnessing their ascent towards the upper rankings of the league. To achieve this, the offensive trio comprising of Chairy Styles, Teemu Salami, and Simon Science must focus on increasing their goal-scoring contributions. Meanwhile, the defensive side needs to remain strong while our goalie Anastasia Soderstrom is currently doing a phenomenal job holding a 0.923 Save percentage. If the team can figure out a way to score more goals, while keeping the defensive core effective, the Falcons can be a strong team heading into the last half of the season. What am I hearing?....
