Make an award for best winger - luke - 07-21-2024

I have come with a suggestion I have been thinking about for a while. This is something I do not write with haste, as I am not a big proponent about adding awards. However, as we have seen in FHM, Centers are by far the best position to be if you want points. So what is being left out is, well wingers. They have not gotten recognition of their achievements and their accomplishments.

Borrowed from @Rashford

This is the difference from FHM6 to FHM8
[Image: YQjxf7D.jpeg]

As you can see, centers by far have gotten more points than wingers at this pace. And with FHM8 reaching about 12 seasons. What have we seen

Ron Mexico Winners
76 - Viktor Hargreeves - Center
75 - Adam Prpich - Center
74 - Adam Prpich - Center
73 - Ivan Lacksamus - Center
73 - Ivan Lacksamus - Center
72 - Evil Allbran - Center
71 - Red Kirkby - Center
70 - Konstantine Selich - Center
69 - Makrus The Tater Jager - Center
68 - Dwayne Gretzky - Center
67 - Lev Lebedev - Center
66 - Aleksander Kozlov - Center

The only times a winger have lead the league in points or goals

S74 - Konstantine Selich - LW lead all players in points
S70 - Mikko Rashford was 1 point behind Red Kirkby in points
S66 - Mats Marner (LW) tied Luuka Lilja in goals that season

I think its also kind of concerning that everyone who won the Ron Mexico in the FHM8 era so far are centers. For good reason as well, as scoring has increased in FHM8, its harder for a defensemen or goalie to win. Since FHM8 there has only been 3 non forwards nominated for the Ron Mexico as well

Brick Wall - Goalie
Borje Samuelsson - Defensemen
Seamus O'Slapahan - Defensemen

There is only 2 forward awards that you can get nomianted for really that matters

Ron Mexico and the Jeff Dar

With the Ron Mexico no one other than a center won it

For the Jeff Dar there has been 3 wingers that won it in the last 11 seasons (Theo Kondos, Binko Koivu and Mikko Rashford)

If the Jay McDonald and the Sergei Karpotsov is going to centers by default as they are the ones with the most goals and the most assists. Then I think an addition of best Winger would be appropriate

Or atleast start a conversation of it all

I'm gonna say the committee could be doing better in that regard but this is a good fix.

Agreed

I'm not really a fan of effectively splitting forwards into centers and wingers, but this is a pretty clear example of how perceptions have changed around this trophy in the FHM era. From this post it seems that points are simply being overvalued by the committee, and certainly this is something that should be taken into consideration.

Appreciate the shout out @luke

First off, big shout out to @SFresh3 for his work in compiling that data (and I apologize it’s sat on the back burner of my own media I have/had been working on).

Secondly, and absolutely nothing against Selich.  But if I remember correctly, their player took nearly 250 Faceoffs in S74, which doesn’t really make them a true winger that season.  I think they either ended the season on the wing, or played special teams centre during that season.  Regardless a very good season, but probably one that should be considered more as a Centre than as a Wing.

Great article as usual Luke

Edit: I should add, my players S70 season might be the best example of when I felt a winger should have won the Mexico. I played the equivalent of 3 less games of ice-time than Kirkby did that season (nothing to say they didn’t have an exceptional season themselves), while I also played an extra minute less on the powerplay than they did as well. Also, with the data shown above, it’s far harder to stand out and even produce those points as a winger. There is one other winger season that stands out as well that I have listed somewhere but not easily accessible on my phone, will try and share later

Holtz' also had a season worthy of recognition as a winger.

If wingers want awards maybe they should try being centers!

No but I think that is a far point, maybe the Luke Wingman of the year award?

I don't know much about much, but the stats speak for themselves I suppose.

An interesting experiment would be to sim a season with all 5 players having the same stats, seeing what the goal/assist distribution per position is.

That's called test simming and it's a bannable offense. Not kidding.
