S78 Ottawa Highlander Team Awards - Vrain - 10-13-2024 Welcome to the Season 78 Ottawa Highlander team awards! With the preseason over but the new season not yet started, we are well ahead of schedule compared to previous seasons. As Assistant Captain of the Ottawa Highlanders, I'm proud to be able to announce this season's award winners.
Ottawa Claymore - Offensive Player of the Year
The claymore is one of the most recognizable swords in history. A uniquely Scottish two handed sword first appearing at the beginning of the sixteenth Century. A massive offensive season can only be named after on of the largest swords in history. This season's award goes to the offensive spark for the S78 Highlander offense. A player who led the team in goals, game winning goals, and shots in only his second season and a threat both at even strength and on the power play. Congratulations to Easton Schaffer! (@
Tartan Shield - Defensive Player of the Year
As opposed to the Claymore, the Shield is synonymous with defense, keeping safe and parrying your opponent's blows. Moreso, the Shield is synonymous with Scottish heritage as it is the foundation to family crests, the cornerstone of an identity. The Tartan is our colors, what separates us and what makes the Ottawa Highlanders who they are. Defend our identity, defend who we are, on and off the ice. This year's winner is a steady and ever constant presence on the Highlander defense, the busiest player on the ice, and the cornerstone of a young and inexperienced defense corps. Congratulations to Bishop Van Apeldoorn!
Cameron Trophy - Best Two-Way Player
The team draws inspiration from the historical Cameron Highlanders, a storied unit in Canadian Armed Forces history. Being a strong unit requires strategy, that both anticipates attacks and can dish them out. Proficiency at both is what made the Cameron Highlanders so potent, and why the Two-Way award is named as is. This season's winner was dominant at both ends of the ice. Leading the team in even strength goals, hits, +/-, and a leader in both Corsi and Fenwick this player helped stymie opposing offenses while driving the Highlander offense. Congratulations to Easton Schaffer!
Hockey Player Award for Best Rookie Hockey Player
This newly named award is named after the Highlanders first ever draft pick, first team rookie of the year, and current co-GM Hockey Player. This year's winner brought consistency both on the ice, scoring 34 points, and in the locker room, with constant activity and input. Congratulations to Hotdog Lunch!
Most Dedicated
(presented by Ottawa GM Frenchie)
When the going gets tough, the ones who truly have the tartan tattooed on their heart are the ones that show up. In an obvious down year from a Four Star Cup final loss, a tough one, Spiff held up his own standards, went beyond even, and while things got quiet, relentlessly drove everyone forward with a good mood and some lighthearted banter. Spiff is what dedication should be, without conditions and without limits. Congratulations to our resident astronaut!Congratulations Spaceman Spiff!
Cob O'Corn Leadership Award
(again presented by Ottawa GM Frenchie)
Named after one of the franchise's inaugural captains, an eager addition to the expansion, and a beacon of resilience in his final year in the SMJHL, Cob O'Corn was was key in paving the way for the Highlander franchise.Spiff, elected assistant captain in only his 2nd season with the team, were an all important voice since they joined the team. An integral part of the S77 cup run, Spiff elevated his game in ways that allowed the team to hold onto their closeness and in ways that really contributed a lot to the general atmosphere and dynamic of the team. An off season some might say, but not for Spiff, who through tougher times shined bright as a beacon of positivity and leadership! Congratulations Spaceman Spiff!
The Highlander - Team's Choice MVP
There can be only one Highlander winner, which is why we vote for these awards. This year's winner will be no surprise. A leader at both ends of the ice, the catalyst for our offensive success, and a key part of the defensive strategy. Congratulations to Easton Schaffer!
Congratulations to all our S78 award winners! Airson glòir! For glory!
