Deep Dive #2 - The birth of Cheese N'Wine and a lookback - Kar3n - 11-08-2024

As the creator of Cheese N’Wine (lol) I have the ability to give a biased lookback of the rookie season for Cheese. As a scared and tasteless swedish piece of cheese (have you heard of Hushållsost?) it was a big step to join the league. But with a bit of wine and a good friend of mine (hey Sizz) I managed to get here.

For starters, Cheese had some misplaced skills for the dream of becoming a high end defender. Wanting to please and contribute by winning a lot of face offs and go the extra mile and screen in the offensive zone, it just wasn’t working for a rookie with limited experience and by all means - the amount of TPE. The coach believed in Cheese and gave some helpful insights which made little Cheese wake up and shift focus to what could help the team - and Cheese self - in the long run.

Going into the end of the season, we can see that Cheese has racked up some points. 6 goals and 35 assists which makes 41 in total. That’s no bad record. With a +/- of  +3, we see some space for growth for Cheese. We want Cheese to become a solid defender that as much as possible eliminates the opponents to score, but also contributes to teammates with nice passes or even the occasional goal, from time to time. Cheese is a big player that should build up some physical skills, both agility and speed is crucial to compensate for the strength training that is currently in the making.

For Cheese, Ottawa Highlanders has been an excellent place with a great mix of experience, rookies and a great coach and GM. Cheese has experienced wins and losses, terrible performances and pretty good ones and I think that Cheese needs to endure both rough and smooth times to get that zingy and mature style. If Cheese continues to get as much playtime as they’ve been getting, soon the Wine will start to get some flavour as well.

When that Cheese N’Wine is ready to give the SHL a taste, some good options would be:

Minnesota Monarchs: Just because a swede feels at home within a monarchy.
Montreal Patriotes: Just because the hipster on the logo would want some Cheese N’Wine and also - Fromage Et Vin.
Chicago Syndicate - Just because it seems appropriate.
Wildcard: Texas Renegades.

Cheese N’Wine would make a great fit in any team in need of a defender that wants to work both ways while trying to pose as a wall to the attacking team. Despite the size of Cheese, you’ll be surprised to see a softer side where team spirit and trying to make your teammates better is a main objective. Although don’t be surprised if Cheese leads the way with some attitude in a tight game in the future.

This first rookie season has been an okay start, but Cheese has a lot more to give and is going to continue to work on some skill and gain more experience, so keep your eyes open for this one!
